  • ✅ Decide which is the DEFINITIVE VERSION of Columns / コラムス (Sega 1990).
Created in 1989 by Jay Geertsen, Columns was ported to several systems such as PC DOS, Macintosh, Windows 3.X and Atari ST. In 1990, Geertsen sold the rights to Sega, who developed versions for Arcade and many other platforms.
In this video we've included the versions developed in 1989 before Sega acquired the license, and all Sega ports based on the original game, so we've only focused on the first entry in Columns series.

To tell the truth I always thought Sega developed the game. I would have taken those earlier versions for bootleg ports.

The Atari 2600 also got a clone of this game called _Acid Drop_ for PAL regions. It was never released outside of PAL regions, but it was a solid effort for Atari's archaic hardware.

Wow... I was surprised the FM towns didn't have a perfect translation. I am still impressed with the Genesis and SEGA CD versions as being most faithful to the arcade... near perfect ports! Still really like that SEGA CD Egyptian intro music!

_Columns_ was a good answer to _Tetris_ and _Dr. Mario_ with its combination of marathon and colour-matching gameplay. Sega made the correct choice securing the rights to it, even if only to compete with Nintendo's puzzle offerings.

The fact that Sega allow this game to be ported to every systems including their competitors system like the PC Engine and Super NES means Sega is more about the availability of this than the exclusivity. They knew this game wouldn't sell on just the Genesis alone. They even bundle a version with the Game Gear and gave free Genesis version to Sega Nomad owners at one point too.

The Master System version really could have been better graphically, especially knowing how simple the game was. It could have looked at least as good as the Sharp PC-9801 version. Nowadays, a more arcade-like remake of Columns exists for the Master System, called Gemitas, which would easily fit on a 1-megabit cartridge.
I prefer the sound of the PC Engine version for some reason, and really wanna get it to play on an Analogue Pocket or a PC Engine Duo sometime.

Best versions of Columns were Sega Master System and GameGear. On gamegear in particular had fun times and almost broke the game; achieve a high score that could not be expressed on the screen; this takes some luck and is not repeatable every play through. Blocks are falling so fast there is no time to think. As he says in Topgun, don't think just do.
