I loved it when you said Ae-shin is the personification of Chosun. Metaphorically, the main character, Ae-shin, is Chosun that everyone loves so dearly to the point where everyone is willing to protect even with their own lives. Ae-shin represents Korea's dignity, pride, integrity, and innocence.

In terms of ramen, "Mr. Sunshine" = mild taste,
"Eyes of Dawn (2016)" = Normal flavor,
In fact, it was Japan, which was many times as cruel as a drama.
Japan took away all the rice, spoons, history books, and cultural heritages, dug up all the minerals in the mountains and cut down all the trees.
And he took all the young and virgins by force.

@@sodori6312 Thank you so much for your suggestion. We understand that Mr. Sunshine only just touched on the beginnings of Japan's cruelties. "Eyes of Dawn" is an older drama and is hard to find, but we will try to watch it. Thank you!

Japan says the drama's settings for Japan were expressed too badly. But if the Japanese study proper history, you can see that the scenes in the drama are less brutally purged.

    • @TheKDramaCafe
      @TheKDramaCafe  4 года назад +52

Very true. Many of the things that happened were much more brutal than anything shown in the drama. It is so important to learn from the past and not try to hide from it.

@@TheKDramaCafe It is a MUST to learn from history and *to get over the past* . Otherwise, the present cannot be dealt with successfully. See my comment above re so dori. Truth, hard. It's a real life heartbreaker, watching people refuse to recognize and act on the danger they are in, because of past tragedies.

I'm an old lady now. My mom who lived that era in Korea. According to her & my aunt, which I've been hearing my entire life growing up, Japanese were much more brutal to Koreans than what & how this drama described. My sweet mom is no longer with us, but I've been hearing about that era during my entire life from elders in my family. And yet, unlike Germany, Japan has been continuously lying about their war crime . There will be no closer & healing without admission of Japan's crime & sincere apology. Instead, Japan decided to fabricate, or simply lie about their cruel crimes. Very sad.

I just finished watching Mr. Sunshine and I really enjoyed it thoroughly as all of you did. Thank you for your wonderful review. I was thinking about what it was that hit me so hard and aside from the beautiful production, I think the deep human values engraved in it changed me forever. 1. The importance of making your country strong so you will not lose it. 2. Respect for human beings no matter what country. 3. Appreciation for our forefathers and the sacrifice they made so we could enjoy the freedom and wealth we have today. 4. The necessity of our generation to think about the legacy we will leave for our future generations. 5. Good (and horrible) deeds will be remembered.
I hope this beautiful film changed you as well.

Each actor lost themselves in their part until you no longer could recall the other dramas you’ve seen them in. In this drama, reality and fiction coexist in the background of Korea (Chosun), which was invaded by many powerful countries.
The protagonists of the drama are likely to be fiction.
However, the history of the United States attacking the Korean island in 1871, the story of a female independence activist (the sniper), the first newspaper published by the Koreans, the Japanese government disbanding the Korean army, and the story of the independent army crossing over to China to prepare for a protest Is true.
In real history, the United States launched the Korean Expedition in 1871.
In particular, France, the United States, China, Russia and Japan fought each other in order to colonize the Joseon Dynasty, and eventually Japan had a historical record of colonizing Korea.
Compared to Japan, which earlier accepted the rifle, which is a civilization from the Netherlands, Joseon was a frog in a well through a closing policy not to accept foreign cultures.
Eventually, after careful preparation, an inequality agreement is forcibly signed with Japan, and the scene just before colonization is drawn in the drama.

For someone who just happened to come across your channel a few days ago, i have to say ... absolutely love it!! All yor reviews, actions and reactions just make me smile. Your in-depth analysis of k-dramas is just so beautiful! You really bring me into the story and it feels like we're all just a bunch of friends watching it!! While watching Mr Sunshine, I really loved it although i was a bit skeptical like you initially said as well. Around episode 13, "the happy romantic part of k-dramas, where the couples really get together lol" I had the urge to find out the ending and Spoiler alert...... it was a sad ending, and i'm not a big fan of sad endings so I had to just stop and kinda make the happy parts my ending lol
However, i guess watching this has reminded me of what i really loved about it and is making me want to go back and properly finish it no matter how sad it may end. In conclusion, thanks for another great review on one of my favorite shows and for giving me the strength to finish it 9(- > -)9

As a Westerner, I loved the show, and really appreciated the history and beauty and loyalty and devotion to ideals, but couldn't get over some things.
All the staring- but- not- staring. Shots where they were just frozen looking at each other but not making eye contact.
Also i was mad at Ae-Sin for making so much drama for their relationship. Like just enlist him in your army already. You can have both love of man and country, nobody's trying to stop you. But also he seemed to resist joining the righteous army, which doesn't make sense because he would have been AMAZING! in the righteous army. Was he afraid of losing his unique American identity if he got roped in with them?
All the coincidences of running into each other at just the right time. I was just rolling my eyes by the end.
Chatacters dying but not dying. I mean, i was happy they kept coming back, but HOW? For example, how did Gu Dong-Mae survive being tossed in the ocean by his boss after that exhausting sword fight?
And where were Eugene's leadership skills? He seemed to have good strategic knowledge, but seemed to always want out of stuff. Didn't want to take care of that little boy, didn't want to teach the joseon army, didn't want to join the righteous army, didn't seem to have control over situations. He was never busy with Army duties, his troupes seem to have gone home to the US and left him there at the legation with Kyle. What did he do all day? What did kyle do all day? Where was the American army the entire time?

Thank u so much for ur new review! It was so fun to watch!! I really enjoyed it. By the way, if the main actress kim tae ri is very new to u, i highly recommend the Korean movie named "the handmaiden". Her acting in that movie is such brilliant.
The Handmaiden is an erotic Korean true love story, also well made thriller with a super big surprising ending twist. The director is a world famous korean director who made the famous film Old Boy. Many Western movie fans said the Handmaiden is the best film of the year. U both will love that movie so much i bet!!! By the way ur acting skill is getting better now ~♥♥♥ Kkk..😄😝😉

Koreans have said, ‘History itself was the biggest spoiler of this series’, meaning that the tragic ending was clearly foreseeable. And yet, seeing the most of the main characters dying was still shocking. It was even sadder to imagine Aeshin’s tragic death, which was not portrayed in the series but most definite, given that it was even before 1910, when actual colonization began.
I am going back to my favorite scenes at times too, but can’t bear to watch the ending twice. So sad.

'A nation that forgets its past has no future'
actually korean are generous to people they truly ask for forgiveness but japanese dont
how couldnt you doubt the truth if angela merkel apolized to victims of the holocaust and visit to adolf hitler's ancestral grave next day. wat would generally people in th world b able to say then? japanese gov did that many times even korean gov complained. its just how things are now. thats why korean cannot forgive them and still in suffer from the past.
