Easily CHANGE Sperzel Tuners from Left to Right Handed and Back!

- A custom guitar building mini-tutorial with Ben Crowe of www.crimsonguit... Most guitar tuning pegs are what they are, you buy a set of 6-aside left-handed tuners and that is that. The US company Sperzel, however, have a very cool design that makes our lives as luthiers much easier, namely you can change the handedness of any tuner that they make. Locking and non locking tuners come apart easily and can be switched around at will, 4 and 2 aside headstock? No problem! 3 aside out of stock? Who cares!
Thank you for watching Crimson Guitars, we would appreciate it if you subscribed to our channel and check out the online guitar building school at www.crimsonguit... where you will find all the videos that are on RUclips and quite a few more!
Brilliant- mine are well old and it wasn’t releasing so just needed the confidence to knock it through
On the Sperzel site they warn that death and chaos will ensue if you take the button off.
Well…shit…..This is genius! I’ve had a set of these same tuners for years that are 3x3 and bought other ones that I needed for an inline 6 when I could of just used these 😂
I've been thinking about buying a set of those tuners for my Telecaster '72 Deluxe, I wouldn't have known you could do this with those. Wonderful!
Looking forward to the next podcast! :)
Great tip! I've known about being able to reverse Sperzels for a long time, but it doesn't seem to be widely known. There are a lot of open-back tuners that can be easily reversed as well, and the method is about the same.
wow that saves the manufacturer on tooling costs. then your labour force just puts together what is in demand at the moment.
Very handy tip to know. This can be also done with some bass tuners as well.
Always stoked when you have a new vid uploaded kind sir, fantastic tip on the Sperzel tuner!! Mahalo...
Been considering Sperzel Locking Tuners for my B.C.Rich Warbeast, Thanks for sharing! Great Tip!
Any time! B
very useful if you want to do something like 4L 2R.
Well, this just sold me on Sperzel
Good news for my reverse headstock guitar :)
Brilliant!! I almost just ordered a left handed set. Any tips on "correcting" tight Sperzel tuners??
Thank you….very useful video….I need to change the tuners of my left handed Art&Lutherie so I will have to change the handedness of all tuners
A few other brands of tuners with die-cast housings can also be swapped (plus the old-style acoustic stamped metal types). Look for the the pinion shaft (black pin Ben flips from side to side) visible from both sides of the through-hole housing.
.
Ben, how many other tuner brand examples do you have in stock? Test out the "back lash" between them; lash is the slop in rotating the knob/pinion vs starting movement of the capstan pulling the string - you'll notice it most when tuning a string up/down to get to pitch. I may do a little video soon with the ones I have.
Excellent! That is reason enough to buy Sperzels.
Great vid mate! Cheers!
My pleasure, thanks for watching.
I managed to unscrew the locking screw, and now I can't get it back in. Who designed this?
Yeah, that's a major advantage of Sperzels. I just wish their gear ratio was higher.
Something you might wanna add is that if you get a staggered set then you should make sure that you don't accidentally put both of the lowest ones and one of the long ones on one side or some other silly mismatched configuration like that.
I'm not entirely convinced a higher gear ratio is all that much of an improvement. I've had lots of different types and brands of tuners over the years, and the higher-ratio ones didn't work any better than "low" ratio ones. A higher ratio means it takes more revolutions of the button to turn the shaft, but "precise" is all about stopping when the string is in tune, no matter how it got there (if that makes sense.) I think the quality of the gears is more important; as long as they mesh well and don't have backlash, I don't think the ratio matters all that much.
***** I agree with all of this, but I just think it's a bit more finicky to get the Sperzels in tune when you're used to higher ratio tuners. They require you to develop a somewhat more "sensitive" feel when tuning up, but once they're in tune they'll stay there indefinitely.
It's extremely nice that their aluminium housings allowing for a million options for colour anodizing as well.
Don't forget to take into account the tuner post radius. The distance that a string is pulled (and thus tensioned) is proportional to radius*angle. So if the radius of the sperzel is smaller, you could still get the same tension-per-turn as a higher gear ratio tuner that has a larger radius.
Ben, not that you would have bothered, I suppose, but have you ever converted Fender vintage-style tuners to the opposite orientation? They've got closed backs with tabs near the post that are pretty well crimped. I've found it impossible, so far, to bend those tabs up, so that I could remove the backplate.
Thanks for that 👍
Not every sperzel can do this. Some models couldn’t be converted. I have 6 inline for fender type headstock and the orientation couldn’t be changed.
thanks a bunch!
Cheers to you ! Nice trick
great little peace of Intel!!!! thanks
Hipshot's ultralight bass tuners are reversible as well, with roughly the same process.
Does that trick work with Schaller tuners also?
Great info. Thanks.
Well fiddlesticks.... I have never known this.... thank you thank you thank you!!!!
Pleasure, pleasure, pleasure :) DC
Maybe you learned it from watching the video from peter barlow uploaded 6 years ago.
Thx for the closeups.
Great!! I hope that will work on Harley Benton locking tuners as well since I by mistake ordered 6L and the guitar have 3+3. I thought I could solve it by buying 6R and then have 2 sets and mount
on my PRS too but unfortunately there aren’t any 6R to buy, not even 3+3 atm. The original PRS tuners are so expensive!
And did it work? I am on lookout for "cost efficient" locking tuners for a reversed headstock. This would be a game changer!
BaguetteRoulette nope, not on those. I solved my problem by ordering 3+3 and used the others on a Strat style guitar. Overalls very happy with Harley
Benton locking tuners. Good value for the money.
Does anyone know if this works on any other tuners? Specifically Gotoh locking tuners?
You can’t do it on Gotoh tuners. On the Sperzel the bush is a separate piece you can move to the other side … on a Gotoh it is fixed and part of the gear housing. A shame really cuz Gotoh are by miles the best tuners imho.
