Job well done ! I'm two years into my mountain cabin in the rocky mountains with off-grid solar as well. I'm 75 years old...It's nice to see young folks making a sustainable lifestyle using sweat equity, dedication and smart planning. Best of luck to you both!!

Man mountain land is expensive. Not to mention the super short growing season. The land over south by alamosa is $5000 for 4 acres. But no beauty of the mountains. I'm just tired if city living.

I want to do solar but living in New york I'd need a big 11 kwh system to get enough power to supplement my power consumption. And those cost like 20 grand WITHOUT the batteries lol

I’ve wanted to quit my dream of traveling and having my own land in the middle of nowhere because these last two years have been especially challenging…. Thank you for sharing your life online. It really inspires me to keep on going despite all the bumps in the road. Absolutely loved this!!!

That was one of the best narrative videos I have ever seen. Kaylee, you did an amazing job! Very cute outfit. Jordan did a great job behind the camera showing every detail. It's so nice that you can use the wood from your surroundings and at the end of the day, you all built everything with your own hands. What an accomplishment.
If you find more downed trees, use the wood to make a goat pile with steps. The reason why they climb on top of their roof is because they need to climb things. Just a thought.

  • @TheRobroy22

For that rough road of yours, try getting hold of an old grader/tractor tyre. The bigger/heavier the better. Lay it flat, put one of your pieces of offcut square tubes on the inside with a strong U-Bolt through the tyre. You can even add a grate inside and add rocks/gravel inside for additional weight. Then, just drag it behind your truck using a strong chain when you go down to town and then back up again on your way home... In no time your road will be smooth and driveable as the rubber even rips out the small rocks sticking out the ground for a nice smooth finnish...

Love your journey,,, thanks for the recap of the year!! I am a nomad artist,,,have lived in my 5th wheel with my 2 dogs and traveled all around the western U.S. creating tiny stoneware vessels and hitting art shows along the way. Covid bit me hard too, and I now am remodeling an old barn on my sons property up in Washington state. It’s so cool to see the things we are both doing in a similar manner, although I am no longer off grid as much as I was when I was on the road. I subscribed to your channel and look forward to seeing more of your journey. Your plans for a community is totally awesome! I wish you both prosperity and joy.

I just discovered your channel and subscribed- with all the back to the land channels on You Tube, you guys are the real thing! I'm retiring in 3 years and hope to build an off grid house, chicken coop, and greenhouse myself. I think the photovolics will be the hardest part for me; but your channel will definitely help. I'm thinking Arkansas, Tennessee, Missouri. Hope there is still some affordable land left somewhere! Even though I won't be around to see it, I'd also like my land to become a community.

I’ve been working towards doing this for a few years now, learning along the way about all “survival aspects” and all else that comes with the journey. Purchasing the right land is no rushing scenario for sure and still where I’m hitting a road block at the moment. You have answered quite a few questions I had about sustainable energy and resources as well as blueprinted an extremely solid and working structure to homestead life! I can’t express enough how grateful I am to have stumbled upon your channel and it couldn’t have been better timing! Just one year ago, I was able to purchase a 40ft Country Coach RV which has been serving it purpose just as your bus has for you, and now its getting very close to time to make a decision on what land to purchase moving forward with my homestead journey. After watching this video, I’m thinking it would be wise to consider more location options such as Panama or a similar types environment. I’ll absolutely be a regularly returning subscriber to your channel now after seeing the what is definitely the closest anyone has come to creating a similar or even almost identical vision to mine. Your progress, process, and algorithms have inspired me even more to get this show on the road! The time is now to push myself out of the stagnate comfort zone (hardly comfortable really lol) I’ve been sinking into here in LA. Thank you so much for keeping the dream alive! Have a wonderful journey ahead! I’ll be tuned in 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
    Regards,
    Nate Wooldridge

New viewer here. I really like what you’re doing. I would like to ask two questions: 1) what brand is the tiny wood stove, I haven’t been able to find one that small; 2) could we get more info on the wind turbine, that is another thing I haven’t been able to find good info on. Thank you so much for putting yourselves out there for us to enjoy.

The progress y'all made in the last six months is amazing! Inspiring make me feel lazy lol Thanks for the overview of your power system you have a fine set up. People look at amp hours but convert it to kwh and you can literary calculate your power consumption. Been trying semi off grid for over a decade and I am still learning. My advice to everyone is plan you power for your worst days more panels often are required it helps series wiring them at 48 volts into the mppt controller. It maximizes low light efficiency sometimes 20% - 30% lets face it much money in the batteries. Most people want to add to the battery bank but a small bank charged to 100% on bad days is better than a large on only getting 50% on decent days. This alone will double the life of high priced batteries but on good days it extreme free power!! Also a propane RV water heater saved me tons of power consumption for the bad days.
Sorry I used to install back up systems and kinda nerding out on your set up....

An air-source heat pump in that climate would be fantastically efficient for heating both domestic water and any interior heating for those cold nights. Dollar-wise vastly more efficient than propane or any other fuel source. The possible fly in that formula-ointment might arise from fact that generating/storing electricity at the site is also expensive.

Love the extensive use of apparently well designed steel fabrications, though no doubt expensive. I suspect it is very important in an environment where wood is a meal for the native insects.

Dakota is where I'm thinking and it's funny that's where y'all started. How is So. Dakota anyway? Going there soon for a looksy to determine it's potential for exactly the same thing your doing. Good to all involved in your project, it appears your doing excellent and thank you for sharing! ☝🙏😎

I would make a large sealed “pond” at the top of the hill and run a pipe all the way down with a hydro electric generator if it rains that much and you can make the pond big enough u might be able to make electricity 24/7 or you could basically use the pond as a massive battery and only open the valve when u need power

I believe you will need a fan on your wood stove. With as high as you have, you will need something to get the heat down to where you will be. One option is a wood stove fan that works from the heat of the stove. Search for: wood stove fan. Great video, quick, concise and thoughtful.
