    A quiet personality is still a personality. I hate when people say certain queens don't have personalities just because they don't look like hysterical chickens yelling at each other.

      Same. When I moved to the UK at the age of 14, I had put on an American accent (even though I have no american blood) just so no one can make fun of me. My Filipino accent is only for family. Unfortunately, I was a teenager full of insecurities of being made inferior. I don't regret my choice but I feel ashamed not celebrating it.

      @Supr Eme Lol so you're saying they're lying about 'code-switching'? Regardless of what you call it, as someone who can speak more than 3 languages, I definitely switch up my accents depending on who I'm speaking to. You are not getting it because you're thinking just about one language - English. It's not about immitating the accent of the person you're speaking to but switching between your own accent and the generally accepted/standard accent in the language you are speaking. For example, when I'm speaking to a Russian in English I'm not gonna put on a Russian accent because that's just rude, but when I'm speaking Russian to them I'll try to sound more Russian as I'm not a native speaker.

    The whole accent thing is making me uncomfortable. You can tell Plastique tries to Americanize her voice and sometimes her real accent does peek through. You can hear it in this interview. Like, leave her alone, Michelle. They really did an injustice to Plastique with this whole pathological liar storyline/edit/whatever you wanna call it.

    • @tyhokan
      @tyhokan 5 лет назад +186

      I agree! I understand it was confusing for people there, and I think distrust is exasperated by competition pressure. I actively worked on Americanizing my English and people sometimes seem to question that a grew up in France speaking French primerly (to be fair, I was always bilingual.) I think the bottom line is she very literally spent half her life with one language and half with another, so any variation in her accent is "her voice." She chooses to mostly use her American voice when speaking English cause that's how she wants to sound and to avoid being made fun of. My guess is she likes the challenge of mastering that accent as well. We're born screaming and our voices are drag, too! Michelle probably intends to be supportive here, I think she just doesn't quite grasp the nuances of being bilingual. Our voices are not as strictly set in stone as people may think.

She meant it as she’s been working towards this for years and Michelle saying not many years is playing at her age cuz she’s young, but there are also other queens who have been trying way longer than she has. Think you twisted her words a bit

  • @SachaDoesPortuguese

    Michelle says you can't hear any accent in Plastique's English, but I would argue that you hear the Vietnamese tinge all the time in the way she speaks, and it's a part of who she is. As someone who lives in a foreign language abroad, I sympathize with her and understand the struggle of how much native language accent is going to come through at any given moment or on any given day.

    • @mesia0

      Okay, but who are you to question her experience? Did you live her life? While you may have emigrated from a non-English speaking country, that doesn't mean your experience was the same as Plastique's. It's not difficult to believe an immigrant with no knowledge of English wasn't aware of older North American pop culture. It's also not difficult to believe she would be aware of newer pop culture, because that's what she was experiencing while here. Knowing New York and not knowing Mariah isn't illogical or conflicting information.

    I'm really upset with how rude Michelle was to Plastique and the sad part is, due to her upbringing (which she discussed on the show) she didn't talk back or anything she just agreed with everything. I was raised exactly like Plastique except I'm African American. When someone older than you says something you don't necessarily agree with, you just respect their opinion and validate it. Plastique WAS waiting many years to be on the show Michelle. Just because she was only of age to be on at 21 doesn't mean she wasn't wanting it before then.
    Also, why were you grilling her on the whole "did you have a TV" issue? And why did you call her out on how her name could be spelled wrong?

    Michelle i love you but for the love of god stop hammering on the accent thing!!! It sounds so ignorant. Literally every immigrant child feels the pressure to assimilate and make their natural accent disappear. It's not cause they become good at it that that means it becomes their "real" accent, it's just the one they think comes through better when being used in public instances or around people of a culture different from their own (like, let's say, in a television show full of non-vietnamese people).
    Seriously it's not a hard thing to understand, stop trying to "call out" Plastique on it as though she lied. She didn't, that's how she talks and y'all sound ignorant about something serious (the immigrant experience) and pressed about something dumb (what someone says is their real accent) at the same time. It ain't cute

That’s why people love Plastique because she has a story that’s unique to her but is relatable to sooooo many people, specifically immigrant kids.

    Here's my issue:
    We've seen many queens on the show over the years who are, for example, from Puerto Rico, with their native language being Spanish. Some had heavy accents, and I remember several people on the show who sometimes played up a kind of "energetic/crazy/spicy Latina" character. I'm thinking of Yara Sofia, Kenya Michaels, Jessica Wild, Alexis Mateo and Cynthia Lee Fontaine here. While I remember for example Yara Sofia and CLF being criticized by the judges at some point for bringing the same wacky character too many times, overall, I got the impression it was widely accepted for these queens to embrace their strong accent and exaggerate certain characteristics/embrace stereotypes sometimes for comedic purposes. And sure, you could argue it's totally fine since they are in fact Puerto Rican and maybe that's their drag persona or how they choose to represent themselves.
    I'm not saying I necessarily agree with that, but I find it disturbing that the show seems to be playing by different rules for different people in this regard. Why is Plastique so heavily criticized for something I think queens of other ethnicities have been doing all along on the show and not been called out on (to my knowledge)? If CLF can play a (dreadful) Sofia Vergara on snatch game with her own native Spanish accent without starting a massive debate, why is the show creating so much conversation around Plastique playing a Vietnamese character and using her own native accent, as well as showcasing the total disdain of her co-competitors in this regard? Just because Plastique CAN have good English pronounciation doesn't make her less Vietnamese. I feel like they need to make up their minds on the show on this issue and not pick and choose by ethnicity which stereotype they consider "acceptable" and which are apparently "unacceptable".

    • @khloeknievel3874
      @khloeknievel3874 5 лет назад +62

      There have also been many, many times that other queens were praised for playing up black or white stereotypes. The judges didn’t call out Silky for bringing fried chicken into her scene or Nina for doing an exaggerated southern accent. It’s unfair that Plastique is held to a higher standard. And it was really uncomfortable to watch Michelle, as a white woman, lecture Plastique about Asian pride.

    • @hannahg.8572

      Yes, thank you @@khloeknievel3874 ! This is *exactly* what I mean! (Although at least a Southern accent isn't racist) I was just giving one example that came to mind, but as you point out, there are many others. I also thought Michelle was being super inappropriate in telling Plastique how to feel about her experience... "But you should celebrate it!" or that "We want to keep it in the appreciation category" comment. Who's we?? Let Plastique have her own opinion and narrative.

      I am Finnish and for me at least personally pronounciating english properly is a task, and I have since childhood had pronounciation problems even in finnish language so trying to pronounciate english is sometimes difficult and by that I don't mean that im trying to hide my finnishness, rather that people can't understand what im saying, but I have learned to pronounciate properly, but sometimes if I get excited or somehow in a strong mood, I might "forget to pronounciate" and what I say again turns into this weird blur, and people have to ask me to repeat myself, so I understand if Plastique had the same happen "In the heat of the moment" as in she didn't even herself realize she lost her "act". Cause like I seriosly, kid you not am surprised sometimes when someone asks me to repeat myself, because they didn't understand what I said. I don't notice it myself, I just kinda figure out by the situation or ask the person, why I gotta repeat myself. I think it might be something to do with brain and linguistic parts of the brain not co-operating with one's mouth/voice producing organs.
      I wanted to share this to open up an idea that this is also possible, not saying it's the case with Plastique, but possible.

      What? British accent is sexy. ANyways, nobody reads the black girls when they do that ghetto girl "accent", which is a go-to character for almost every black girl on that show.

      I don't know where you're from but like in at least 90% of the world, a TV is an important sign of wealth and social status as much as a car is.

    • @LLLemi
      @LLLemi 5 лет назад

      In some countries it is and in some it isn't. Many people don't own a tv just bc they don't watch it and prefer reading or doing other stuff. If a city has efficient public transport a rich guy can easily go to work by metro or bike and not need a car. What i mean is that she can't just generalize. Sometimes Michelle talks like a dumb bimbo who doesn't know anything outside of LA or wherever she's from.

    • @yepitsthatguy5278
      @yepitsthatguy5278 5 лет назад +2

      @@LLLemi Lord you and so many other fans are dramatic. Yes Americans glorify certain capitalist material items but Michelle is just trying to get behind Plastique's exterior. Michelle has been in this show alone for close to ten years. She's spoken and connected with over 150 queens, I trust her to be a good judge of character of queens and I can tell she sees past Plastique's self-producing and facade. Now I'm not calling Plastique fake at all but it's very obvious that she has a case of the 'Valentina/Laganja/BenDeLa acting curse' where they're constantly putting on a character or in Plastique and Valentina's case in particular, seem to always be switched on and controlling what they say in front of the judges.
      The kinds of countries you're talking about with 'efficient public transport' aren't exactly comparable to places like Vietnam, many Asian countries in general, South America, and Africa where I'm from. As much as Michelle might be generalising about a place which she doesn't know much about, you're acting as if people in Vietnam don't give two shits about the TV and respect reading and outdoor activities more than anything. I've been to Vietnam several times, and not that that qualifies me to make sweeping statements about the place but from what I could tell it's a lot like where I'm from. No people are not fighting tooth and nail every day to buy a tv and sit around watching tv, but a TV is a symbol of wealth, comfort, entertainment and pop culture like any other electrical luxury goods. Plastique literally reiterates that.... when she says that people in her neighbourhood would congregate in her house some days to watch TV. If that doesn't encompass the social prestige and status that a TV can bring, than I really don't know what does. Also Michelle is from New Jersey.
