In Mythology, he destroys all of the Nine Worlds, not just Asgard.
Magni and Modi are some of the survivors, but they somehow managed to end up sleeping with the fishes here.
Maybe as Helheim opens its mouth, the sons of Thor will set aside their difference and work their way out of Helheim.
But that's just my suspicion...
Well I think its more that kratos wasn't originally part of ragnarok. Plus he changed the phrophacy about atreus.
Nothing changes in Ragnarok if you die in battle you return to fight in Ragnarok.

In GoW he also destroys the nine worlds. They say Asgard because that's the most relevant part, but Mimir states that "from Surtur's power, the world can be born anew."
We know the world is only reborn after all 9 Realms are destroyed, so Surtr must have destroyed all 9 realms, thus bringing forth the climax of Ragnarok and the subsequent rebirth.
Odin: "Your precious Serpent is dead, your fellow Jotnar are dead, whatever trick you might have up your sleeve won't work. You can't defeat me"
Loki/Atreus: "I know. But he can."
*Surtr emerges from the Bifrost and mowes down Odin's army of Einharjar*
Surtr: "TREMBLE BEFORE ME, ASGARD, FOR I AM YOUR RECKONING!!!"

"To truly embrace your purpose, and the patience and sacrifices it demands is to ensure your day will come". How very Stoic of you, absolutely magnificent.
Surtr's story is perhaps one of the most respected of all the giants, it give us a lesson. That we can always reach our goals, if we are constant and if we are ready to make any neccesary sacrifice.
Even if that goal is slaughtering an entire pantheon of gods and bringing ruin to nine whole realms
Lol this didn’t age well. Surtr was unwilling to sacrifice Sinmara, and if anything this makes him more sympathetic because we’ve seen characters willing to sacrifice their loved ones to reach their goal (Odin).
It is said that Surtr is the most powerful being in all of the Yggdrasil. He fought both Thor and Odin during Ragnarök, and won, Thor escaped Asgard, while Odin was devoured by Fenrir. Then Surtr destroyed an entire realm, Asgard with his sword plunging into Asgard's core. I do kind of wish Surtr survived Ragnarök tho.
Thor also dies during Ragnarok, just as he kills Jormungand, he's poisoned by the serpent's venom and walks nine steps before he succumbs.

Would make sense as it is foretold the armies of the giants will be led by Surtur and Loki. Maybe in the second game another set of trials will be a part of the story in part to recruit surtur as an ally
In the bestiary, I wanna say it's in the Soul Eater's description in Atreus's journal, Andvari makes a mention that Surtr asked for Soul Eaters to be sent to Muspelheim. And he adds that he's terrified at what Surtr could want with them. We probably fought them already in the Muspelheim trials or we have yet to see some suped up badass Soul Eaters in the next game. Either way, Surtr sounds more cerebral than just some sword wielding thug.

In Norse myth, Farbauti was the mysterious jotun who fathered Loki,and beyond his union with Laufey and him siring Loki,we don't know much about him, which actually kinda makes perfect sense in the GoW universe when you think about it

Love how we all know the aesir god as the good guys but here the bad guys are actually the good ones giving Norse myth is a nice refreshing twist
No way! In both Greek and norse mythology the gods wer as big assholes as portrayed in the game! Zeus actually enslaved his father, Odin actually sent Thor to kill all giants he encounters, kids or otherwise!

Surtr dies in one of the murals when thor and odin land perfect strikes right before they both die their deaths, when he finally lands his sword burns and breaks the nine realms, my guess is that early on thor and odin tag team until odin dies from garm and is then replaced by someone else (maybe kvasir or vidarr and valirr combined, def one of his other sons and brothers) and when thor dies to jormungandr he is replaced by freyr and he dies to surtr.
Basically, one big mush of god tag teaming killes both surtr and the entire fukken world tree.
Can't wait to see him come next game. Just imagine Kratos and Atreus staring down Freya, Thor and Odin, backed up by the full might of Asgard, and to the duos left and Right, Jormungandr, Fenrir and Surtr appear, followed by the looks of absolute horror on the Aesir Faces.
Sutr's blade is the weapon that I wish Kratos will use beside Mjolnir.
Surtur's blade is probably fucking huge.
So that would have some serious Metal Gear Rising vibes.

Kratos will not kill thor, probably jormungandr's poison will kill thor but kratos would play a part in weakening him enough to be killed by the poison, maybe since kratos' leviathan axe has eitir poison it can weaken thor just enough beforethey both die in battle, c'mon kratos is def not surviving this he's seen too much shit and it makes sense to end his story where it started, with a person with the blood of odin

I think it would but instead of Kratos being the Protagonists Atreus (Loki) bc Kratos would have died of old age or later in the new game bc lets face the horrible truth Kratos will die so the story will carry on through Atreus after the time skip n he'll be or it could be that after thor n the world snake fought n got knocked bck in time thor came to kill Atreus n provent Ragnorok

thor is weak without his hammer , zues was pure thunder and lightning himself . the hammer did all the work for thor to kill all the giants and this aint even like marvel where u have to be worthy to pick it up , i can see in the sequel kratos will use that hammer in some point against thor . i wonder if they gonna use the original myth where thor has to wear the magical gauntlet and belt to lift the hammer cause he himself couldnt without it

I agree. May be all isn't as it seems. Maybe the Norse gods are bad and the giants are the good peaceful lot and it was all twisted from tail to tail past down.
I know that people think that kratos will die, but I think it will be atreus who dies probably at the hands of thor or odin with maybe freya helping them also since kratos killed her son. That will be the return of old kratos, the one that destroyed olympus, but now he destroys the Aesir gods, he'll be the ragnarok, that was foretold.

No. It's Atreus's story that has just begun. In the murals of Jotunheim that follow after the end of Kratos, the boy was shown accompanied by three wolves. Whether they be simply wolves or the Wolves known as Skol and Hati, and their father Hrodvitnir, we have yet to see how this Ragnraok will play out.
that is to throw you off and doesn't really mean anything as of now. The director Cory has himself said that kratos is immortal and cannot be killed off and neither do they plan to and also that god of war series and kratos go hand in hand.
Kratos also possesses Hades soul after killing him in god of war 3 and absorbing his soul into his own body. May be that has helped make him immortal?

Wait...it just occurred to me... Surtr is the destroyer of realms and slayer of gods right? A giant with a flame sword more powerful than the gods. Isn't that description pretty similar to Kratos himself? The series is known to have time travel events and paradoxes and even Jormungandr's presence in the game is hinted to be cause of time travel. So what if Kratos is actually Surtr? And the voice speaking to Atreus in muspellheim is him from the future?

mmmm maybe Kratos is Surtr. Now hear me out It could be said that their is a Surtr but when he dies Kratos will be the one using his sword. Sort of like how he did at the end of last game bringing hope back to the world. Since We all know killing the gods will have some sort of side effect.
In Ragnarok, Surtr and the Rest of his fire giant would burn the Nine Realms into Ashes using his Giant Flaming Sword as he destroy the Realm started with Asgard.
My guess is that surtr dies in the fight between thor and odin. Kratos or his son or both uses the sword to destroy asgsrd

Kratos being surtr makes so much sense. When Atreus asks whether it’s the past or the future foreshadows the ending of the game where thor shows up to battle kratos. Kratos wins the first match but the second will be lost because Odin will be present as well but in the death of kratos, Atreus will usher Ragnarok.
You know it's possible that when Kratos "dies" in Atreus' (which seems like that is going to happen in part 2) somehow Kratos will be resurrected as a new form of Surtr (since Odin may decide to kill the original Surtr to prevent Ragnarok). This isn't Norse canon to be sure but what is in this game?

I can picture it in the next game already:
Odin and/or Thor are in some important part in the progression of the story. Maybe they're fighting the player as Kratos or even Jormungandr, but either way, at some point, I imagine the sky becoming dark. The clouds start to turn black and glow with that eerie orange like fire.
The battle momentarily stops when ash starts to fall, and then they hear it in the distance:
*ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO*
Just the arrival of Surtr is enough for everyone else to stop and question what's going to happen next.

Maz Kazu yes it is in marvel surtur is a fire demon who is destined to destroy Asgard and battle Odin for eternity even after Odin dies....Norse mythology surtr is a fire giant ...he is not destined to destroy Asgard cause the battle of ragnorok doesn't take place in asgard it will take place in a land in midgard he doesn't get killed by Odin and Thor he and the vanir god freyer(Freya brother) will kill each other in battle ......surtr and the sons of muspelheim will ride to battle when the heavens crack open from the beginning battle of ragnorok...while riding to battle surtr and his soldiers will destroy the bifrost due to their massive weight riding on top of it and surtr will leave behind him a trail and flame that cannot be put out.... during the battle of ragnorok he will end up swinging his flaming sword throwing flame around setting the world in flame killing gods and all but 2 humans who will find a place to hide from the flames ....surtr flame does eventually go out after the battle is over magni and modi are part of some of the survive and are now the new owners of Thor's hammer and when surtr flame go out this will be the beginning of new life cause ragnorok isn't the end of all 9 realms it is a cycle that will happen again destroying and creating new life from the ashes....other things that will happen during ragnorok is Thor and the world serpent end up killing each other....Odin and tyr will get eating by the great wolf fenrir.... And Loki and heimdall will kill each other in battle also after all odin may had did to prevent ragnorok........ ragnorok could've been avoided if Odin and the aesir gods didn't go throw with the bindings of Loki and fenrir
