    Thank you for a great video. I had so many discussions with other PP owners that CHG mode is useless, but I actually use it when ever I can’t charge it and I’m on the highway so I can use EV in the city. Actually if you combine the EV range from a CHG mode and driven distance the fuel consumption is easy around 3.5-3.8 l/100km which is around 63 mpg but the best part is that you don’t have to do eco driving to get that results:-) while in HV mode you have to be an eco smart driver to get similar results.

    Truly, I think that you are one of the pioneers with motor vehicles. I drove a Prius for almost 10 years. With this new generation, you are giving precious insights for this new vehicle. This is where we need to go! In Minnesota and many other places we have aggressive drivers, people that will speed up to the stoplight after stoplight. They enjoy putting on their hard brakes on the vehicle. When you drive a Prius, your whole mindset changes. You are not only helping yourself but you are helping your community and our planet. When driving a Prius, we always enjoyed trying to get the maximum amount of miles on a tank of gasoline. We could stay in nicer hotels and have nicer meals on our travels. I do think that the EV range has improved significantly through the years. Even with the RAV4 Hybrid, the EV goes on more often that I remember with the older Prius's. The Prius Prime is a vehicle of the future! Thank you for sharing!

      Thanks fleetingdays! I still have a long way to go I feel to compare to other automotive RUclips channels, but I'll get there. You hit the nail on the head - this car is really something. I believe that even if the tax credit goes away, Toyota has managed to make a car so awesome that they won't need it in order to sell the Primes. This car is a game changer for plug in hybrids, and I'm glad to be apart of this new era in automotive technology.

    • @ChargedUp
      @ChargedUp  6 лет назад

      I'm glad you think so, but not really. The car can absolutely be clean if you use solar to charge it. I don't. I do like having the option of gas or electric based on fuel prices though. The car is more of a financial move for me versus "saving the planet". I've previously owned a Nissan Pathfinder and a Chevy Silverado. I also have a B7 Audi A4 with some light mods to it but its starting to show its age and the Prius is a good reliable car for me since I am traveling a ton (over 27,000 miles in the past 11 months). And if you look at my videos, you can see that I average around 52 mpg - I don't always try getting the max fuel economy - I still drive normal, but am I going to film myself going above the speed limit and posting it on RUclips? No. Btw - I see you're into EBC brakes, I just installed an EBC big brake kit on my wife's car because she warps rotors like its her job. Just because I have a Prius, doesn't mean I'm not a car guy.

    • @fleetingdays

      bertito43, I drove a Toyota Prius for about 10 years. I enjoyed maximizing my efficiency with the gasoline. I still think that it is dumb to sit at a stop light and burn fuel for no reason. Many people want to be "thrifty" as our parents have taught us. So, for me, we could well afford an inefficient automobile. But, does it make sense? You could take your significant other for a nice meal. You could afford nicer hotels. You have more disposable income. In the bigger picture: sure, we should try to save resources. But, saving the world has never been our objective. After you've driven a hybrid for a while, it becomes fun to maximize as much mileage as you can on a drop of gasoline. With the money that you are saving, you could take better care of your significant other. You could pay down your student debt. And, many more things. Think of Oregon, they want to tax people based on their mileage. Why? Because people are becoming smarter. More and more vehicles will become hybrids. If they used the money appropriately for roads, that would be a good thing. But, no. I drove a Prius for ten years. And, I loved it! If I wanted to go somewhere, gasoline was the last of my considerations. I had freedom! With a 2016 RAV4 Hybrid, I don
      't get the same mileage. I'm still with the Hybrid family. But, I would be a liar if I said that I didn't miss the Toyota Prius!

    That's actually impressive given that the engine does 2 things in charge mode; propel the car and charge as well.
    I would be very curious if you have done any tests and measured during driving, is there a difference in the charge rate at the bottom half, compared with the top half of the battery's SOC.
    For example, does it take less time to charge 0-40% than 40-80%? If so, then it could make sense to switch between modes when the battery is half full.
    Any thoughts?

  • @DanyCervantes
    @DanyCervantes 4 года назад +2

    So, you’re saying that charging the battery while on the expressway from the fuel tank can extend the mileage you can get out of one full gas tank, than if charging weren’t done at all.
    I’ve only just become aware of this feature after 3 years of owning a prime. I’ve started trying to make my own experiments. I hope it does magically extend my per tank mile range.
    Normally without charging it’s about 450 miles per tank.

  • @danielbaboiu2288

    This result is contrary to your other video, using the charging mode while stationary. The reason is that the battery can be charged at about 20kW (according to Toyota specs). You observed almost 1.5h charging time while stationary, which somewhere around 4kW charging power (total battery is about 8.5kWh, battery still has significant charge even without electric range, and charging is done to 80%). Having the ICE work at such a low power is very inefficient. On highway, however, the ICE has to work at higher power (to provide propulsion as well), and this is done at a rotation speed that is much more efficient.

    hi, i have another idea. it would be nice to se if cruise control on highway set to 60mph would make better fuel mpg then manual driving?

    • @ChargedUp
      @ChargedUp  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Roman - this will be a challenge for me to do this year. I'm getting winter tires put on early next week so the tires, road conditions (already snowing here) and temperature will make it difficult for me to do proper tests while being safe on the road. It's a good test to highlight though - I've already tried this myself and find I get better fuel economy myself than using cruise control. I will table this one for spring - don't worry though, I plan to do it after winter. If you have ideas for winter tests, let me know. I plan to do the test you suggested where I heat the car up before taking off in the morning soon. Stay tuned and thanks for the ideas!

      I tried charge mode driving from SF Bay Area to Sac. I had it in charge mode for about 45 minutes, then used the battery in EV mode for about 25 miles. When I shut the car down when I got home, it asked me if it was ok to use AC to charge. Since I don’t see that question very often in the cooler months, that tells me it does warm up the battery. I also wonder how much stress it puts on the engine and cat. As for the battery warming up, might be charge mode is putting in 5 KW, then in EV mode the battery is draining at 8-10KW or more.

    What are you averaging per tank? Normal driving vs efficient driving.

    • @ChargedUp
      @ChargedUp  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Muhammad - when I don't charge, I typically get around 450 miles per tank. Keep in mind though that most of my driving is to and from work, which is only a 13 mile distance for me and is on the interstate. The fuel efficiency is not as good when the engine is cold. On my return commute, its almost entirely uphill too. When I go on road trips though, I get about 500 miles per tank driving normal and when I drive fuel efficiently, I get a little over 600 miles per tank.

    • @muhammadchoudhery8923
      @muhammadchoudhery8923 6 лет назад

      Thanks for the reply. Keep up the good videos. I had the previous gen Prius which in my opinion looks letter then the new regular Prius, and my tank average with normal driving and efficient driving if I remember correctly was around 450-500 per tank depending on how much I would push it or how careful I'd be. My commute to work is about 40 miles 1 way I was looking into getting a prime, should be able to charge it over night while parked at home and at work during work hours. Only draw back is I don't like that its only a 4 seater I have a family and we tend to need that extra seat in the back, and for not to much of a difference in mpg's I may just hold off on getting the Prime till they add that extra seat back and improve the range on it. I don't want to spend about 30k+ on a Prime when I can spend less then 10k on a previous gen Prius and get a little less mpg's, or just take the tank out on it and try and see if I can extend it in anyway.

    • @ChargedUp
      @ChargedUp  6 лет назад

      Hi Muhammad - yeah, the back seats would be an inconvenience for your situation I think. I have a coworker that purchased a Prius Prime and his child seat fits okay in the back seat, however he only has one child seat. And I also agree with you on the looks for the latest generation regular Prius looks, I think they took a step back. But the Prius Prime I feel they did a good job with the looks. This is just my opinion though, everyone has their own taste.

      Charged Up the prime looks great that's one reason I really wanted to get one. I did read some articles saying that Toyota will come out with a refined version of the prime with a 3 seat rear seat and possibly increased electric range. I'll just till that one comes out.

    Do the same test not using charge mode and see what happens. The fact that you got over 60mpg on the trip is impressive, but the laws of physics say you would have done better by not using the engine to charge your battery. The way to find that out is to test it.

      From my tests, I think I can get better fuel economy driving in HV mode, but taking advantage of B mode and adjusting the accelerator so that it switches to using battery only every so often. However, I think that if you use charge mode and EV auto only, it takes the "guess work" out of the equation and you don't need to be constantly thinking of how to maximize fuel economy. Although I was able to get better fuel economy in hybrid mode, using charge mode and EV auto was quite efficient too.

  • @TheObsessedGardener

    I have an electric iMiEV. Charge mode consists of a good book and 20 minutes at the fast charger or while I sleep or do something else.
    When are you getting an EV? I've been driving a corolla hybrid in #NZ and it is driving me mental. It has all the silly ways of forcing me to use petrol and for some reason chooses to charge the battery while I'm going UP hill instead of using the battery to reduce the strain on the engine then regenerating DOWN the hill. Toyota are clueless when they came to designing these bs hybrids.
