One of the best lines in the show "There is no war within the walls. Here we are safe. Here we are free." In just one line they perfectly demonstrate the ultimate control, to make someone believe they are not controlled. Also that moment when Joo Dee 2 shows up is one of the creepiest moments of the show!
But what if Long Feng and the rest of Dai Li manipulate them to be brainwashed everyone without telling nobody in the Ba Sing Se about the fire nation? Just like what they did to Jet! That was so terrible for a coincidence of what they did to them! 13:29
I know this comment is five years old, but it’s funny to me how quickly americans are able to pick up on media and governmental control over the masses in anything except themselves. Not saying you’re american or criticizing you directly, but for years I’ve noticed how the very same people who are able to see Ba Sing Se for what it is, are the same americans who think the US have military bases around the world to “protect” people and war movies have no influence ovee their perception that war is “cool and awesome”.
Welcome to Avatar's 1984: State-controlled propaganda dictating people's thoughts and opinions. Anyone contradicting the State (a.k.a. telling the truth) will be brainwashed, so they don't step out of line ever again. citizens aren't allowed to discuss anything

I feel like you guys are underestimating certain kids (11-13 year olds at least) who watched this show. Kids can be pretty freaking smart and attentive depending on how they're raised. Heck, the Gaang itself is proof of how perceptive youth can be.
KevinzPC I remember watching this in 6th grade and even though I did not get it to the extent of it as an older guy I still got some of its themes and that it is not as black and white as other cartoons can be.
KevinzPC yeah! It was 2005 when I first saw it, so I was about 6. I still remember the first episode I saw was with the pirates. I saw it all as a kid and I’m kinda re-discovery it. Turns out little me had some good taste.
Yeah, as a kid I knew there was a lot of shady stuff going on in Ba Sing Se, especially in terms of Joo Dee and Jet. It made me beg the question of what happened to their tour guide and why they were silencing Jet. This show helps kids ask these types of important questions, and in turn make them much smarter in that "if this has deep stuff going on, I wonder what else has it..."
@@Andr3y143 Yes. Observe at who Rana looks at first in emotional scenes (scenes with flirting, kissing, hugging, etc.). It's always my man Suraj; they totally fuck.
Every time I hear 'It's not a kids show, kids couldn't of understood what they were watching' I sigh a little bit lol. Like, I watched this show live as it came on tv. The themes weren't hard to follow. Every other kid I knew who watched it when it was initially airing understood what was going on. It's why we all liked it so much. Because it had dense story lines that you had to pay attention to and it wasn't acting like all of us were stupid. Not that we didn't like the shows that did have simple stories that were easy to follow and often didn't link episode to episode. But, there's a reason atla has such a dedicated fanbase from that era.
Yeah I watch most of the show as it aired and understood most of what was going on. But for me personally I kept watching for the awesome bending, action, adventure, characters and comedy. Though I didn't know how complex and awesome the story was until years later. It be came like a standard for me when it comes to movies and tv shows lol
i didn't understand it as a kid nor my friends. It depends on which part of the world you grew up. Maybe you live in a country where information is spread out freely so you knew this kind of thing early. My friend and I was born and grew up in Indonesia, we've been thaught a lot about false history of our country to fit the goverment propaganda, we've always made to believe that we are the victim of WW2 but erase the montrosity that we did in the past in our history book. The propaganda are so deep into our people's head that if you mention about anything bad about our country post-WW2 or during the cold-war, you will be thrown in the jail because of "spreading lies". It took me more or less 20 years of my lifetime to realize that my country is a US puppet, that's why anti-communism propaganda is so strong here up until now.
it was the first show I really followed closely as a kid, and I was only like 8 when it came out. at the time, while i understood the show i dont think i truly felt the gravity of it till rewatching it when i was a teenager. the more I rewatch it and see people react to it, the more i realize how much it shaped my world view and moral compass. its just such an amazing story
I always appreciated that the show pulled inspiration from Asian folklore and literature, but also history as well. The whole Ba Sing Se situation, is pulled directly from the late/fall of Qing dynasty China, to the design of the city, to the Dai Li, the whole ignorance of the situation of the country, the last emperor of China being practically a puppet in everyones hands, to the point where you see in a couple of episodes his character design is modelled on him as well. I was always fascinated with it this part cause I just never really knew that the creators of the show were interested in that part of history.

This is actually based on the government of China during the “reign” of its last emperor. He was also basically a puppet with all actual power in the hands of his advisor who also had secret police patrolling the streets. The Earth King’s name Kuei is even similar to the Emperor’s name Puei and the advisor was named Dai Lee.
People that want them to talk less say so because when they say something extended they miss a really good joke or important plot point. Nobody wants them to be dead silent the entire way.

I've been WAITING for u guys to get to this episode!!!! Not only for amazing plot but also to see all your reactions to jet losing his wheat and to hear nahid say "this is not a kids show man" 20 times
This episode fits perfectly for today. The King being just a figurehead/puppet, Slow Biden being a walking shell. The left being the Dai Li, and Pelosi is Long Fang
I understood all of this as a kids, I’m currently watching this with my neace and 3 nephews 6 and under and they fully understand it. Trust me kids understand way more than we realize
I will say I remember being in 1st/2nd grade watching this show and some stuff I understood. Like Jet being brainwashed but like the later episodes explained it a lot better when it goes wrong, trying not to spoil lol.
I first watched this show when I was about 5 to 7 years old and I understood this show so well that I still remember some of these episodes even after about 4 years!!!!
Rana is always saying about all little creatures that they remind her about Amira. But now 5:37 there was a cat owl and she didn't say it. :) 17:20 The thing that there was a regular bear, was a inside joke about the show and it's weird animals. 6:40 That was why they were talking about the bear. And Katara says "Just... bear".
I'm rewatching all these and you guys should definitely get the phrase , "there's some fuckery afoot" on a banner or plaque or something and hang it above the reaction couch lmao
This reminds me of "Calm your mind. You know what's best. What's best is you comply. Compliance will be rewarded." (or in other words Ba-Sing-Se was taken by Hydra.)
Avatar was one of those shows that I would watch if I was channel surfing, but wouldn't especially seek out, until this episode, this truly made me a fan.
Kids can definitely understand that this is a commentary on society and government! I did when I was a kid. And this isn't the only "kids" show or media that tackles deep and complex issues. The Harry Potter books, for example, are also chock full of commentary on racism, bigotry and prejudice and LOADS of criticism of the government.
I don’t feel like I missed out watching this from the ages of 11-13. Imagine being exposed to television of this quality at such a vulnerable age. My mind was blown every week. The Bumi reveal for example in the first Omashu episode had me SHOOK. It wasn’t more difficult for me to catch things and understand concepts in the show at that age, I think the writers made it very accessible. It just made the big reveals, fight scenes, and finales more intense, shocking, and emotional. The only downside is it made my expectation for tv shows God Tier lol. I know these reactions are a few years old, but I’m enjoying revisiting the show and seeing how much you all enjoy it.
As a person who had watched this series when I was young I can agree with you about how some of the more deeper topics went over our heads as children. When the second Judi came it almost gave me and my siblings a more scary/ thriller feeling because it was so unexpected. Like you all said, I believe the show was made for a vast audience in mind even though it was shown on a children's cartoon channel (Nick).
I remember watching this when I was a kid and IT IS MY fav anime! At the beginning like you guys said I didn't understand the themes as I got older rewatching the series I understood this

'This is Not a Kids Show'
Two Words to confirm that: Lake Laogai
I will say I remember being in 1st/2nd grade watching this show and some stuff I understood. Like Jet being brainwashed but like the later episodes explained it a lot better when it goes wrong, trying not to spoil lol.
I first watched this show when I was about 5 to 7 years old and I understood this show so well that I still remember some of these episodes even after about 4 years!!!!
Rana is always saying about all little creatures that they remind her about Amira. But now 5:37 there was a cat owl and she didn't say it. :)
17:20 The thing that there was a regular bear, was a inside joke about the show and it's weird animals. 6:40 That was why they were talking about the bear. And Katara says "Just... bear".
" this is not a kids show "
flashback to 8 year old me drawing fan art
Rana your makeup/outfit today is goals
love your reactions guys, keep it up :)
This episode always scared tf out of me as a kid
I'm rewatching all these and you guys should definitely get the phrase , "there's some fuckery afoot" on a banner or plaque or something and hang it above the reaction couch lmao
I am ready! I am loving your reaction! This episode is creepy and the next episode :(
This reminds me of "Calm your mind.
5:17 "You mean the secret police?"
"....noooooo?"
"I'll take that as a yes, thank you"
Fun fact, the dai lee were created by avatar Kyoshi..
No Ba Sing Way!
14:30
Rana making my day ;)
are...you.....simping
I gonna use the phrase "there's some fuckery afoot" nonstop from now on HAHAHAHAHA
15:25 I think you guys are underestimating us lmao. We 100 percent understood all of this when we were watching it as 8-12 year olds
hahahahaha Suraj knowing all the Lost episodes is just the best thing ever
I watched Avatar when I was a kid, and Now I rewatch it again.
then I realize
HOW CAN THIS SHOW BE THIS DARK???
Man, I would love a girl like Rana. Cute, nerdy, funny. I'm just sayin'.
@13:35 I laughed so hard I scared my dog.

I remember watching this when I was a kid and IT IS MY fav anime! At the beginning like you guys said I didn't understand the themes as I got older rewatching the series I understood this
I remember watching this a kid and I understood nothing but everything at the same time.
Me haha, looking back all the themes make sense.
I love how every time Mickey sees something shocking in the show, he just :0
I watched this as a kid and i understood how freaked and complicated and amazing this show is. Its the reason why to this day avatar is my favorite american cartoon
My favorite part of this episode is when they were super confused over the fact that the king had a normal bear
YAY! I missed you guy's reaction! Felt like forever since episode 2x13 lmao
The Basing Sey punchline still keeps me cracking up 😭😭😂😂😂😂
I've always wondered what inspired Suraj's "MEANWHILE!" joke 🤔. It always makes me smile.
Who else heard they say’ episode 13’ , but it’s suppose to be episode 14
