nah I've seen it. One of my friends was an exchange student from Saitama and he grew up with one of those. I've seen this kid add like it's nothing. Hell, he can even find square and cube roots with ease in his head. TBH Our minds are extremely powerful and anyone can do this with enough practice. To say that's impossible is to seriously undermine the brain's potential.

An important part of those kid’s training is to hear mambo music as they work so they won’t be distracted by a kind of music that’s meaningless to them... one more eastern subtlety !

@Vonzi0000 Ebay, and there really is one with a reset button... doesn't work the way you'd think, though...

Can someone tell me what is the name of this documentary? The man who's talking is iconic.

2 years late, here’s the answer. The series is Japanology, all episodes spanning many years are free on youtube. This is just a clip, the episodes are full and very well done.

The abacus, and specifically, the soroban, is a very interesting instrument, but, being a good mathematician has nothing to do with the fact of being a good calculator. I say that because they seem to imply that if you are a good soroban user, you will be at maths, and that is absolutely false. You can be a disaster with arithmetics and still be a brilliant mathematician.
