China is bringing the ill-fated Titanic vessel back to life in the city of Suining in landlocked Sichuan province. Investors spent a billion yuan (US$155 million) in 2014 for the construction of the full-size replica, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2021. The project, which is located in a theme park, is expected to attract visitors from around the world. But it has been criticised by Chinese netizens as a waste of money.

A very interesting idea. The only issue i would have is that nearly every theme park ever opened is abandoned and decaying. Because no matter how many visitors they get in the first few years that number always drops off to the point that it can no longer sustain itself. This is especially true of parks that have very large and expensive attractions. I wish them luck, but all i can see is a future site for urban explorers making videos of how great it was when it was open.

I am a huge fan of this idea and project. However, to my understanding, this is not the only replica being built. None the less, I would love the opportunity to take a trip on this completed ship. I have alway been very intrigued by the story of Titanic. For whatever reason, I was drawn to it as a kid and have watched several movies and documentaries on it. I understand some people may have issues with this but Titanic and her story is such a deep part of the world’s history it would almost be a shame if someone wouldn’t want to duplicate it. It would be a floating museum and wonderful history lesson for many. I especially love the idea of telling Titanic’s story during the voyage. Personally, I feel it is a wonderful way to show respect to everyone who was involved in designing and building the original ship and to everyone who lost their life on that fateful night of April 14, 1912.
PS. I really love the comment someone made about no cell phones being aloud onboard. I doubt that would ever happen, but I still like the idea.

Mutually agreed. Something about their investment in the historical tragedy doesn't feel relatively authentic nor remotely genuine. Rather the glitz and reviere they were promoting in 1912 for the voyage.
Also no memorial or commemoration to the victims of again a historical tragedy being marketed as tourist attraction. Yes the brilliance of the Titanic's luxury class, sheer size and production is a grandeur and innovative design of the past, however there's a dozen Eurasian architectural and industrial icons China could've recreated, the Statue of Liberty, Church of Notre Dame, Pantheon, Sphinx.. all thematic and ideally positive innovations rather than a majorly flawed, ignorant and senseless tragedy.
They might as well have recreated the Hindenburg's disaster with simulated descending so one can feel the corporate overlords letting them down once again.

155 million dollars seems a bit low for such a big project and obviously it won't be an exact replica cosmetically maybe but it wouldn't be cost effective or environmentally friendly to run four massive coal powered engines 365 days a year they wouldn't make a profit for as long as the real titanics been at the bottom of the Atlantic.

2-5 million people a year. That seems a little optimistic. Some uk and usa based top attractions don't hit 2 million. Also how long would it last with so much foot fall?
I'm not suggesting it won't be popular but even 1 million visitors a year is 2739 a day, every day.

It's not an sctual ship. It is a building shaped like a ship. This time, we are garunteed it won't sink because it's already on the ground. Unless a sinkhole opens up and swallows it up.

I think it’s a great idea. I love seeing the past come to life. I’ve been to Old Bethpage Restoration a few times. Cool place to see how houses were furnished hundreds of years ago. And who doesn’t like the Titanic? I’m not sure why it’s been kept so alive all these years cause it’s not the most tragic loss of life at sea by far but it is what it is.
