    A lot of people will try to bullshit you on the internet. Not here... this guy is legit. I went from an unplayable 5 fps to a consistent 30 using this running Deadside on the laptop I use for school. I had already tried every other optimization and speedup in the book. Never in my life did I think I would be able to comfortably game away from home.

      The 10-15w Nvidia MX cards were a brilliant engineering feat if you undervolt these versions to perform like a 25w+ GPU. But you have to do this! Oherwise at stock they "rubberband" frequency to stay within the power limit way too much to be playable. Honestly, it's baffling Nvidia didn't just limit the clockspeeds more so they are more stable in real world usage.

    • @ilikereason
      @ilikereason Год назад

      @@ARMASPIRIT Yes and no. It didn't really work out the way the instructions were explained in this video for my specific laptop.
      My laptop is not the same that is in this video and I have the MX350 and not the MX250.
      In the end I ended up doing the standard way you go about under volting. I used MSI Afterburner and went through stress testing for every .25 millivolts I decreased. Keep doing that until it becomes unstable and then back off by .25 millivolts.
      In the end I settled at .800 volts and manually set the clock at 1595mhz for the GPU. By default it was like .950 so I under volted by .150 but at the same time can run it at 1595mhz at that lower voltage. This shaved of about 4-5 degrees Celsius but at the same time getting better performance.
      For memory though pushing it like he said in the video made it unstable. So for memory I only overclock+200 to +250 and that's it.
      I have pre sets saved in MSI afterburner for different under volting settings so I just click a button whenever I want to game on it. It is very stable with slightly lower temperatures over default.

    • @arthurwiering
      @arthurwiering 4 года назад +2

      @@armandocaldera933 I recently started to. I noticed that even though the performance got much better I would still experience big framerate drops on a long gaming session due to thermals (mostly because of the way they configured the system because my temps never go over 70°C, they stay in the mid 60s) so I set it to 30 fps and now it's much more stable. I would recommend doing it even for not so demanding games like CS GO. I can reach close to 100 fps on low settings but it drops frequently, going back and forth what makes the game stutter.

  • @SaturnusDK
    @SaturnusDK 5 лет назад +30

    Recently you had a HP laptop with a 8705G you had problems with tanking down to 800MHz after boosting for a few minutes instead of just throttling back to 3.1GHz base clock worst case. I had a similar issue but actually found a simple but strange solution. If you go into the power plan settings under advanced setting you'll see a heading called "Processor Power Management". In there you go into "Maximum Processor State" and change it from 100% to 99%. That solves the issue. Then you can use Intel XTU to lower voltages as much as possible while still being stable, and you'll actually see clock increase to 3.2-3.4GHz even under heavy load. Sure the fans spin like mad but it doesn't get nearly as hot in any circumstance as when it boosted to max frequency for short bursts and then had to scale back to 800MHz to bring temperatures down again completely tanking performance.

    • @MooresLawIsDead
      @MooresLawIsDead  5 лет назад +4

      I know this should work on that, and there are other methods I could have used as well. But for me it wasn't worth it given the size. Look at my Envy 13 - it's absolutely tiny, almost as portable as a handheld gaming device! I am willing to put in the effort to minimize throttling.
      However that 8705G laptop was 16" and easily 3-4x as big as my Envy 13. I am not putting up with throttling issues on something this big, it's just horrible design I am not paying for.
      To put things in perspective: My undervolted Envy 13 in this review runs at sustained 3GHz clocks while I am working without any problems. If I get something 4x bigger, I want it to perform better (not the same at 99%=base clocks).

  • @MooresLawIsDead
    @MooresLawIsDead  5 лет назад +25

    Some final notes I want to add for anyone in the future who follows this guide:
    1) Your laptop will be unique in how it throttles stupidly. For me I ended up leaving my MX250 core locked at 960MHz (Memory still crazy overclocked). At this level my Whiskey Lake i7 really stretches its legs past 3GHz while I am gaming.
    2) The low core clockspeed on my MX250 settings means it never really can game easily at 60FPS in modern games, however the memory OC ensures it can actually handle resolutions above 720p, and the extra power savings allow the i7 to keep the framepacing smooth. Can't complain considering this laptop is about as portable as a Nintendo Switch (and vastly more powerful lol).
    3) It's worth pointing out that the issue with the GPU throttling is more of an issue with the CPU's boosting algorithm. If the GPU+CPU is using a combined >25w and over 70c each it seems to run into the weird throttling issues. However if I ensure the gpu never uses more than 8w (so it never exceeds its 10w tdp) - then it doesn't trigger the cpu throttling. No joke that's how silly it is. If I keep my MX250 locked below 1000MHz core the cpu just boosts past 3.5GHz while playing BFV lol. But if I OC my MX250 to 1800MHz (I can!) - the CPU throttles to 1GHz... So dumb.

    • @Benethen_
      @Benethen_ 5 лет назад

      Can you disable turbo on your CPU so it uses less power and stays under that 25w limit and crank the GPU clock? Feels like there's better gaming performance to be had

    • @MooresLawIsDead
      @MooresLawIsDead  5 лет назад +2

      @@Benethen_ I will go over this in my review of the laptop - you can limit CPU power usage by setting an Amperage limit in XTU, but you have to like REALLY Limit the cpu to stop throttling enough to allow the gpu to go full throttle.
      The way this (and MANY) laptops work is they just entirely prioritize the CPU's boost in the GPU+CPU boosting algorithm, and then make the cpu crazy throttle with the gpu if JUST the cpu gets too hot.
      If you cap the gpu to 8w though, for some reason the CPU is allowed to just turbo all the way.

Naturally, temperatures are much higher and I've purchased a laptop cooler to compensate, but games are now playable at respectable graphics and resolution. I used this in conjunction with ThrottleStop and it seems to reduce Throttling to a point where the GPU, undervolted and underclocked still performs at least 2x better than factory/new. Another tip, turn off CoolSense as it affects more than just fan speed.

      That's what I explain. I actually love that Nvidia successfully made a 10w gpu I can use to game in an ultralight netbook... but there is no reason for these companies to not nail the boosting algorithms perfectly. This laptop is much better than previous ones though to be fair, and I go into detail in the full review.

    I watched your overclocking video for the MX 250 about 50 times in the past week. What do you recommend I do for games that seem to have bottlenecking issues. There are nights where I play Minecraft and the game runs flawlessly and there are nights like tonight where the game runs terribly. There aren’t many background processes running and I’m not sure if it’s the Intel graphics card that’s messing it up. Do you have anywhere specific that I can get your exact settings that you run for games, including The MX 250 and intel 620.
    I really appreciate you responding this long out after the video was made as well. I had commented about a previous concern involving Minecraft a few weeks ago and received a reply back

      i don't know what wattage my gpu does after curve editor, i just check my mhz and core voltage, i want to keep my stock speed and lower voltage. its too bad that you have to know the keyboard shortcut to get into curve editor(ctrl-f).

      @sudd3660 5 лет назад

      i know he said that, i am just throwing it out there incase he did not know about the curve editor, its hidden behind a keyboard shortcut and the only way to separate the clock from the voltage.

    Under any circumstances you should not overclock your laptop. laptops have limited cooling capabilities and overclocking increases or produces more heat, so doing so means you'll have to increase cooling which is apparently limited in laptop designs.
