G'day Jen! I've been lucky enough to get up close to a koala! And even now it's an animal I'll forever love to be around. Coming from a Sydneysider I recommend you visit Taronga Zoo. It's a zoo in Sydney. You should also visit wildlife sanctuaries that also educate people on Aboriginal culture. On the central coast of NSW there's a Sanctuary called Walkabout Wildlife Park. It's a sanctuary that pretty much does that.
