- So my birthday was four days ago... But my grandma passed away February 1, 2019. This is my first birthday without a phone call from her or my grandpa (who has also passed). But I was super smart and saved their last birthday call they ever did together. My grandpa would pass a few days after this voicemail.
Needless to say, my birthdays are not exactly known for being very joyful. There is a lot of death that happens around this time of year at least in my family.
So I decided to draw how I woke up this year on my birthday. I sat on my bed, pulled up the voicemail, and remembered the good times.
My grandparents were always there for me and my family and there is no doubt in my mind that I wouldn't be the person I am today without their influence (both good and bad ;) )

I don't understand what happened?
My grandparents always called me on my birthday to sing happy birthday to me. The last time they called together (before my grandpa passed) I missed the call and it went to voicemail. Four years later (2019), Grandma passed away as well. I saved the voicemail (the last words my grandpa ever said to me, btw) and drew a comic to go with it. Pic 1: two framed photos of me and other family members with them. Pic 2: a music box I got from them when I graduated college. Pic 3: the bulletins from both of their funerals (plus our puppy). Pic 4-5: Me listening to the voicemail in bed on my birthday knowing that both of them will never be able to call me ever again.
