"Fools tread where Angels fear to walk." I don't who said it, but it was told to me by my professional seaman grandfather. And applies in this situation. Bravo to the man who donated his prize money to the family. "May there always be an England!"

I live in Exeter, Devon, only 15 miles from Teignmouth. Went there by train last week, day out. Actually had a pint on the beach where Crowhurst's wife was shown, and Donald, packing supplies on Teignmouth Electron. (It is in the back harbour, facing inland).
I can't imagine the amount of stress he must have been under living a lie day in day out, alone, at sea, having to keep that lie going, surely knowing that it would, in one way or another be his undoing. Pride and hubris drive men to do terrible things. I feel sorry for this man and have great pity for his plight. He had a dream that became a nightmare that ended his life, that is a proper tragedy. As for his family, I have no idea how they copied with all of this. Terribly sad.
There's something about this story that won't let me go. I watched a dog trying to cross a two lane highway once. It looked right, saw it had space, and went. Halfway across it saw a car bearing down from its left, turned to go back, and found the first car upon it. It turned again, and was hit and killed. From all I've read, Crowhurst seemed to realize the enormity and difficulty of the venture before he left, but he'd already put his house and business on the line. The boat would sink in the Southern Ocean if he didn't cheat, and he'd lose his family's future if he quit. If he'd finished third, he might have pulled it off, with no one looking too hard at his log, but when Tetley's boat sank near the finish he had zero chance his deception would pass the scrutiny his success would incur. The stress he must have been under is unimaginable. Some people denigrate the guy, but people make mistakes all the time on far smaller scales on far smaller stages. To me, Crowhurst's a genuinely tragic figure.
Maybe he radiod for someone to pick him up, and is now living peacefully and secretly somewhere in South America! no scandal, no wife & kids, no responsibilities. Escape from a lifestyle unwanted. Maybe.
It is possible. Considerably possible. He had strong motive to disappear ( all the debts) and was clever enough to manipulate a log the way to make it look like suicide,.
@@harryburrows2112 So u believe the same as Donald-it was better to choose suicide because he lost a boat race, than return to his loving family. You are just as sad as Donald.
@@harryburrows2112 Na, not really. He could have just gone home to his loving family. Humiliated yes, but still alive and his family would have loved him no less. Instead he chose suicide.
His lie was totally pointless and impossible to hide in the case of win, and even at the end he had opportunity just quit the race, as many did before, and therefore avoid to be exposed. I think he just lost his mind because of loneliness and depression , and made irrational decisions. However his decision mortgage all his earthly possession just to make this trip was irrational enough... Sad story, he certainly was not a bad person, not an scum, just one unfortunate soul :(
He was a hero, Donald Crowhurst, as was Johnson for selflessly giving that money to Clare and the kids so they could atleast keep some semblance of a normal life, which for them especially would never be the same again.
The narrative of this video is seriously interrupted by long and irrelevant adverts, if you want to avoid them omit after 7:01 and resume narrative 11:47, followed by more Ads at 11:40, resume after 22:47 to the end.
I cannot help but wonder how he expected his wife and kids to manage financially whilst he was off on a very long " jolly " sailing. I only wonder about this since all the research I have done highlights time again how Skint the family were. It seemed his dream turned into an absolute monster which he totally lost control of .
I agree, but many people justify sacrificing to chase dreams by saying “when I make it big, it will be great for the spouse/kids, so it is worth it.” Of course, it rarely works out that way.
I think Crowhurst killed himself bc of Nigel Tetley's sinking. It's ironic that Tetley committed suicide a couple years AFTER his 1968 Race disaster due to being only 1,000 miles or so from winning the race, and then to have it taken away. And the reason Tetley was pushing his boat so hard was bc he THOUGHT Crowhurst was nipping at his heels. It shows how our SELFISHNESS can affect those around us in ways we CAN'T imagine. GOD BLess

Mr. Knox-Johnston was right: "Let's not judge too harshly": Crowhurst was a brave, flawed man.
t his guy shows how one lie leads to another and the lies get bigger until your boxed in..

two long commercials at once? Truly ridiculous in a 20 plus minute show No, I'm wrong 3 long commercials one after the other. what a shame.
