Summary: Bria Skonberg, the talented vocalist-trumpeter and recipient of the Vocal Jazz Album of the Year Award at Canada's JUNO Awards, visited Paste's studios on July 19th along with Mathis Picard, Sean Eugene Zbigniew Cronin I, and Darrian Douglas. The quintet played a few songs from her latest album With A Twist. She kicked things off with na original, "Same Kind of Crazy," her ode to the sensation of falling for someone in the city. Next Skonberg was ready to swing on her cover of the African American jazz musician Valaida Snow's "High Hat, Trumpet, And Rhythm." Then came a seductive version of Richard Alter and Jerry Ross' "Whatever Lola Wants." "Shifting back towards the more personal, Skonberg performed the intimate, original tale of unrequited love "So Is The Day," showcasing her powerful vocal range. Last but not least came her New-Orleans-influenced take on Ed Sheeran's "Thinking Out Loud."

Bria is an incredible musician and her knowledge of the history of the music and musicians is also pretty awesome. She seems to have knowledge beyond her years...

So refreshing to see such an amazingly lyrical singer, and she's not doing the whole marble-mouth-affectation thing that so many singer are falling into now. To say nothing of the soulful horn playing! Love this.

I saw this band live literally yesterday. They were INCREDIBLE. Every member brought life to the music, every note and rhythm. Instant fan! And Skonberg is an iron lady... Lady with iron lungs!!!

what is it that makes me cry over well performed Jazz tunes?!
I love not only the music but also the lyrics - most of them come with a sense of irony.

I have been in love with Bria since I first discovered her and her Mighty Aphrodite classic trad jazz, all female 7 piece ensemble about 12 years ago. She was barely out of high school. I have since been thrilled to have seen and met with her on two occasions, about a year apart, when she was on tour in the Tampa Bay area. She actually remembered me on the second occasion, from the previous year. Awesome! Her story on the etymology of "Stardust" is amazing. Ask her! Her reedman, Evan Arntzen, is also excellent and sang "Stardust" better than I had ever heard - and I'm 82!! She's beautiful musically and physically; and totally humble and without affectations.
