Claudio MONTEVERDI (1567-1643): Magnificat a sei voci (1610)
The Magnificat for 6 voices and basso continuo is the "small sister" of the Magnificat from the so-called Marian Vespers (Vespers 1610). Monteverdi published it in 1610 together with the larger work which included obbligato instruments - a real alternative for Vesper services and performances where only an organ is available.

Still an absolutely gorgeous Piece.

Being the smaller sister of the great Magnificat a 7 voci of the Marian Vesper, it seems to have been created first serving afterwards as the fundament for the big version. The setting of the smaller one feels somewhat more harmonic in general, more "on purpose" from the beginning to the end and is more homogeneus in its style. It´s a really interesting excercise to compare both, I love both!
