I did my first triathlon this summer and two other athletes came over to help me set up my transition area and give me some tips. I was so impressed with how awesome and helpful the tri community is!
Hi Taren, thanks for all the tips, finished my 2nd 70.3 Ironman ( 2 this month) , on sunday in Dublin , Ireland, swim was 46mins ( i couldnt swim 25 metres in April this year) , I only have a road bike but I still did the 90km in 2 hours 41 mins, so I was happy with that , then a 2 hour half marathon , as someone that is only 8 months into the sport , I am happy with my 5 hour and 43 minutes , which is 12 minutes faster than 2 weeks ago, I was bib number #289. I hope to upgrade my equipment next year and to come back stronger and faster , there is always more to learn , I also need to sight better. Thanks again
Thank you! Really needed this video. I'm doing my first triathlon next month and worried about the transitions, also struggling with my stamina for running. Would really appreciate a video on how to slowly build your stamina for a 5k or any length of run. X always love the videos!
catherine Alice I did my first tri last summer, I was terrified of the transition s, wish this video came out then. But I did a couple of practice Transition days. Just had my wife and kids hangout next to my gear to watch it, since I practiced at a beach. It was my first tri so I took the time to put socks on and put my bike shoes on. I only cared about finishing, and figured the comfort of socks was worth the transition time for me. What helped me the most was talking to the guys next to me before the race. When I told them it was my first they gave me some help getting setup and a run down of the race. They helped calm my nerves and got me amped for the race.
catherine Alice don't forget to use all the stuff you're going to use in transition. He left out a lot of stuff - race belt, maybe a visor for running, maybe a second towel to dry your feet, how to set up your socks if you don't want to/can't go sock less, shirt if you don't have a tri kit yet etc. Try doing this: set up a transition area with all the stuff you're going to use, put on your wet suit, goggles, swim cap, AND chip belt, spin in a circle for 30 secs, do 5 pushups = simulate the disorientation from getting out of the swim, run to your mock transition area, change. You'll see where you have problems (eg wetsuit catching on chip belt which is why I mentioned it). Put on helmet etc, take bike, run to some marked line, practice mounting just after line without stopping, ride a short loop, practice unmounting at line. Run back, practice changing to run gear. Depending on your race you'll have to either wear your race belt+number already on the bike (number on your back) and just move it to the front for the run or you'll put it on only for the run - check your regulations and practice accordingly.
Thoughts on the hats - You could look into order fulfillment through amazon. They will take a cut (ours is 15%) and charge a monthly fee (ours is $40) but their shipping costs are minimal. And they will handle all the housing and shipping.
I made a massive mistake in my triathlon this last weekend - I forgot to leave socks in transition with my running shoes, and hadn't practised running without socks! I won't make that mistake again (blisters, ouch). Also, I use road shoes for my bike - so I'll try out your tips in my next tri at the end of November (Half IM) :D
What do you do with your bike computer during the swim portion of the triathlon? Do you turn it on when you get into T1 or do you leave it running during the swim then reset it before exiting?
Hi Taren- I am a COMPLETE tri beginner- I have ran several marathons and got the idea to do a tri because I want to change up my non running days, anyway- I have a very silly question. Does everyone wear a wet suit? Does it go over the tri suit? By the way- I LIVE your videos!
Thanks Claybril! In some races, wetsuits are required, some they're not allowed. It depends on water temperature, and the race organizers make that decision at every race. So if you're doing triathlon, you will need a wet suit eventually. There are more wetsuit races than non-wetsuit races, I would estimate. As for the tri-suit... some do, yes! Some put it on in transition.

Hey Taren, per use: cool video! 👍🏻 I am doing my first sprint in a couple of weeks and I am wondering about two things: 1) We get a chip from the organizer, do I need a band for that chip or is that usually included? (Probably?) 2) The bib. How to beat put it on without any tri accessories? (Do not have any😬). I will swim in a bathing suit and then will just put the shorts and t-shirt on after, so should I just pin it to the shirt? 🙃
Amti Mati: You can pin it to your shirt. Or buy a band. Not sure either if they are given to you. Maybe in beginner's races? It's my first race in 5 weeks too..not prepared at all :-D
Do I have to have a pair of shoes for the biking and another pair for the running? Is it common for beginners to just hop off the bike and just start running with the same shoes (I'm probably gonna be biking in my $100 hybrid bike)?
NLMaverick as a beginner doing a sprint or every man's distance you're probably better off riding your bike in your running shoes. The bike distance is so short that cleats won't get you any advantage over what you'll save in transition when using only one pair of shoes. And the method he showed here with the shoes attached to the bike is really advanced. Most people do their first few races just with running shoes, then upgrade to cleats but not attaching the shoes to the bike and only then upgrading to the shoe on bike method. And if you don't train the latter two well you'll lose so much time mot not getting into your shoes or not getting the shoes to clip in etc. On longer distances cleats are really valuable but as a beginner on a short distance it's not worth the bother imo. It's also so much easier to run to/from the mount line in running shoes than running in either bike shoes or barefoot. Esp if you're not all that lean yet as a beginner and/or if your running technique is not all that good yet - running barefoot being overweight and/or as a heel striker will kill you.

Hi Brian,
Very impressive! Congrats from a rookie! :)
odybuvar , thanks man 👍
Excellent 👌
Preach!!! One thing I pride myself on is a super quick trans time. Transition is free bonus time savings.
Been watching this channel for a while now and I just noticed that this video was shot at my old High School

Like that shoe idea as I have road shoes also love your transition tips cheers T
no rubber bands for the bike shoes?
Just looking for a few tip and tricks in transition, how did I never think to put baby powder in my shoes?? Thanks again TT!
Race belt?? Also do you wear gloves?? Fuel in transition or only ever when onthe move?? thanks for another great video ☺
I really could have done with this 2 days ago... Did my first tri on Sunday 20th.
Thanks for another great video though Taren 😁
I always wear socks. I cannot do it without socks
Asics Noosa.... You put them on in your sleep and designed for barefoot running, no blisters yet. Also leave your bike in the right gear

Hey Taren.. Why you still dont do jumping mount? you can learn it in one day, and it saves you quite a few seconds when starting on bike... ;)

Taren what running shoes do you wear? Is this really better than wearing socks?

Get your hats when you compete in Austin 70.3 , maybe ?

1) Chip is most likely attached to the shoe laces
2) Buy a belt for one, it's really cheap from amazon and worth the few bucks.

Thanks a lot!
My shoes will drag on the ground if I leave them clipped in. Guess I need to practice rubberbanding them level and running onto the bike...
if you was closer to the border get a po box but since you not near the border, get someone you trust to be a middleman
bonn1771 middle man available for hire right here Taren
Why don't you use rubber bands to hold your shoes into de bike?, so the don't swing as you run in the transition zone and it's easier to put them on
Hat dilemma: Use me as a middle man in exchange for triathlon training? :)
Rubber bands broke in my last race😥😥😥. Costed me about 40 seconds due to that I had to pull them off and put them on on the side.
It's called drop shipping saves allot of time and money.
It's hard to get used to ride the bike without gloves!
I would think to do Amazon too but if you are interested in a more local in house distributor send me an email.... Im in the Austin List
