The problem with Kenya is everything is packed in one city. The whole nation is under one city. The country is huge but opportunities are only in one city called Nairobi. The master plan to elevate other areas in terms of investment and opportunities is not there at all. After finishing my civil engineering degree in Nairobi I went to Mombasa to look for a job to build my skills, I was disappointed by being told to apply in Nairobi. What a country. For me Kenya is Nairobi. It will choke under traffic, lack of water and sanitation. By the time we realize it will be unlivable.

I completely agree with Jerotich. During my time working for a Chinese developer, I witnessed some concerning practices. The company I was employed by appeared disconnected from the entity selling the apartments, almost like a shell corporation. Wages were significantly lower than those offered by local contractors, and payments were consistently made in cash, sidestepping tax obligations. On payday, it was common to sign against numerous names and ID numbers, many of whom I didn't even know. Moreover, aside from essential materials like cement, sand, steel, and gravel, all other supplies and equipment were sourced from China, contributing little to the support of local businesses. Additionally, individuals claiming to be government officials from ministries like labor would visit the site and depart seemingly content if you know what I mean.

Nairobi was well planned by the British. Estates like Jericho, Maringo, and Mbotela had 24-hour operating dispensaries, designated play grounds, nursery schools, primary schools, and social halls. Yes, we had all these amenities growing up. Kilimani was for the upper class. Nice manicured lawns and fences. Buruburu was another upper-class estate. We had well stocked libraries. All that had gone down the drain. I said this 7 years ago that Kilimani was becoming a pipeline that went to a group of schools. Right now, kilimani is a pipeline with makeup and filters. Look at Eastleigh, once a neighborhood that was clean and easy to navigate. Nairobi has become overpopulated, and our resources were not meant to accommodate these many people. Ruai sewerage can't handle this.

There are public servants we pay through our taxes to safeguard our interests. That's where the big let down is. And , ooh yes! "Hatupangwingwi! Even if they are thieves, they are our thieves. Jerotich is fighting the good fight. Good luck to her. But it's a lost cause as our leaders are the enablers of these developments. Emma Too has been fighting a similar fight in Kileleshwa for ages. Its still a good fight as history will remember these champions of our environment. Keep going Jerotich !

That, is the Truth!. The unvarnished truth!
The Kenyans with their perennial docility give too much latitude to foreigners, even going to the extent of being relegated to second place, and having less rights and privileges in their own country.
And the appalling thing is that this is not reciprocated for Kenyans in the countries of origin of the foreigners getting the coddled VIP Treatment here.

I love this conversation. I am glad she’s shining a bright light towards these “Chinese developers.” The Chinese can NEVER allow Kenyans to go and develop in China. We visited these buildings and the Chinese are in control, NOT Kenyans. We have allowed the Chinese to enter our country, develop and own land so easily.
The Chinese are getting away with all these atrocities because these so called custodians of our laws are allowing these Chinese to run a mockery.
We as Kenyans need to wake up and fight against such developers and the corrupt leaders in office accepting bribes. They’ve enabled so much and not upholding the law. Am glad it’s coming to light and the conversation is ongoing.

She is very dynamic and on point. The guys are making excuses and trying to shift her core argument. It is not abt Kenyan lawmakers or the Chinese business men. It is about the consequences as she has brilliantly illustrated. Urban planning is very important for sustainability of quality of life. Sadly, too many Africans look for instant gratifications and think very little abt common good for all.
Over crowding and lack of basic amenities and infrastructure is a recipe for total chaos and serious consequences for generations.
I like her tenacity and her articulation of the issues.
She is keeping the fight alive.👏🏼✅👊🏽

Great debate. I think the focus should be two pronged: 1.) pushing the government to update infrastructure like roads, sewage and water so that these areas can attract investors and 2.) push developers to operate within the law.
The reality is that the cost of land and construction has gone up over the years. It is not realistic to expect a developer to put up only 4 floors because that will not allow them to make a return given the high cost of construction and the high cost they acquired the land. An apartment will cost 50M and will not attract buyers if they do that. Demand will be low. It is also abit discriminatory to tell someone who has land that they cannot develop on that land because those who developed earlier in the neighborhood have some kind of privilege.
I think high rise apartments in Kilimani and Kileleshwa are here to stay as a result of capitalism, high demand and high cost of land. We should push government to update infrastructure as we push developers to comply with the laws. Also, keep in mind government is collecting 4% stamp duty on each apartment. Government makes more from new developments by collecting 4% stamp duty. The more the apartments, the more our broke government makes. Government will therefore have an incentive to approve more and more apartments coz they will collect more and more stamp duty, and rental income tax, among others.
