This is gold! I just got my 4speed side shift rebuilt and was worried why the shift lever wasn't springing back, just need to roll the bike for that to work correctly. Thanks for the vid!!
yeah, Sometimes you have to roll the back wheel to get it to go into each gear, but if the shifter isn't returning, something could be in a bind or a problem in the ratchet, broken springs maybe.
Fantastic videos, thanks for developing them. Question, I've got a kicker / starter FL lid 4 speed trans on my 7 FLH. After I start her, I feel the kicker clicking... Is this normal or should the kicker not have any gear clicking?
Hey Chuck great Video!! Understand i right the lids are changeable? I have a have a pre 52 transmission on my panhead but i really like to have a ratchet top Fx for it.. is this possible? Thanks for help!
@@charleslawrence6553 i never seen a back slap jockey shift like he talks about. And i rode and seen alot of jockey shift bikes. Pretty cool though would like to try one out.
First where did you get that jockey handle and secondly how do you keep those three teeny tiny little screws from loosening up all the time??? That's the biggest problem I had when I was running jockey shift.
The rotary or cow patty top will wear out because of inferior stamped rotor. Weld the channel with stainless and use the tip roller for clearance when you dremel the channels. You'll know its bad when it wont stay in 2nd gear.
I’ve got a rotary that has gotten stuck in 4th twice on me now and prior to that when down shifting into 3rd or 2cnd getting a false neutral. Where can I find more info the repair you’re referring to ? Thanks
@@motorcyclemike8555 I just pulled the cow patty off and got the shifter cam out. The slots in the shifter cam was what I welded. I took a new shifter roller and used it to space the slots correctly when I dremeled it. Sounds difficult but the hardest part was getting to the cow patty! I never saw info on it, I just did it. Sold that bike and it is still working for 3 years in Fla.
Yes, it will... but If you want the neutral light to function you will also need an FX shift gear to match. If you are not concerned with a neutral light, either gear will work.
I think I cover it in my in my 4 speed rebuild video. Its on my channel page. The springs in the ratchet can break. Or something is in a bind inside the trans.
@@ChucksCycles nope didn't see it just the install of the gears in main case. Guessing I have to remove both outer & inner primaries and clutch hub to expose rachet . Can I remove rachet cover to change springs without taking off the top?
@@bobvan1128 You should be able to access the springs by removing the primary. Then remove the ratchet cover. Keep in mind the screw at 6 oclocok has a nut behind it.
3 years later and this video is still helping people! Thanks for the info! 😘
Outstanding - I needed to learn all of this as I am building a 4 speed from scratch and am boggled by the options

Thank you. You just helped me identify what i had on my 76 FXE basket case. Its not together yet but now i know i have a FX ratchet top 👍

And now I understand why my 72 has a reverse shift pattern.
That was one of those oddball years, glad you found it useful.
Great onfo 👋👋👋👋✌️👍👍👍
I’m having issues it’s stuck in gear n won’t shift could that be in my shift drum
Can I take my ratchet top lid off without taking transmission off my shifter is stuck in gear n won’t shift I think it in my ratchet lid
. . wondering if the FX Shift Barrel will fit in a FL Ratchet Top ? ? ?

For a hand slammer, a jock top, you always find neutral!!!
