Why We Left The UK And Moved To Canada

  • As a young family we emigrated to Canada for greater opportunity and quality of life. The reasons we left the U.K. were many, partly to do with economics, the high sales tax and aging infrastructure that wasn't being maintained. The middle class were being put under increasing pressure with high mortgage interest rates of the late eighties and early nineties.
The confrontation of the Thatcher government left a legacy of bitterness. We had always had the desire to work and live abroad, Norm worked for a French company for a while and had numerous business trips to France and was exploring the idea of working in France.
An opportunity arose for us to move to Canada and after we researched it we thought it would be very good for our family, so we sold up in England and moved to Ontario Canada.
In this video we highlight a few of the reasons that made the decision for us.

On my first time in London (1994), I was shocked at the 18% VAT and how tiny the houses were in terms of interior space and yard space. The subway system though (the underground), even at that earlier time was very extensive and impressive.

'I was shocked at the 18% VAT ...' VAT is now 20%, although less on some products, but the real advantage is that you don't have to think about it since it is rolled into the ticket price. I found the 'sales tax' concept in Canada and the US constantly tripped me up as I did not know how much I had to pay until I got to the till. It seems strange to separate out the tax element from the sale.

Love this couple! Thanks Tina and Norm, I enjoy your channel very much. My grandmother and grandfather came to the U.S from Scotland, I believe they came by way of Nova Scotia (my mother's maiden name is McMillan). My aunts and uncles, as well as my mother were the first generation to be born in the U.S. I have felt a yearning all my life for the U.K.. , and have often wondered why my grandparents left. This really helped me understand how difficult it is for working people (the class system and inherited wealth). I am guessing it is pretty expensive to live there. I will get there someday to visit. Just caught this video of yours (April 2022) and find that your reasons leaving UK for Canada some 10 years ago (around 2011 ?) resonate with a lot of people when they live in a place where
there is relatively higher taxes but lesser services and that when opportunities come along for a better life at a lower cost with a relatively little transition time and cost, people will grab the
opportunity. Good for you. Glad that it worked out for you two with this adventure.

Interesting video. As a resident of the United States 2 of your reasons were very familiar. Traffic and overall maintenance of not only roads, but bridges and communities overall here in the US. And, with our political turmoil an increase in people’s nastiness in general. I have traveled extensively in Canada and it is such a lovely, refreshing country to visit and the people so helpful and friendly. You made the right choice.

Thanks so much for your kind words, it’s a shame what is happening politically and the effect on opposing sides. As a Canadian that has lived in the USA since the late 90s, I can tell you that issues with political turmoil and infrastructure vary widely by state.
I spent many years living in California. And despite the overall beauty of the state, the infrastructure is quite sub par. Roads are in poor condition. Traffic is terrible. Air quality is quite bad. And to be blunt, they are not very tolerant of different political views.
I now live in Florida and it is completely opposite. The roads (minus the construction!) are in excellent condition. Traffic can be bad in some areas, but tolerable. Weather is humid, but good all year round. But the big difference is with Florida being a swing state, people here are much more tolerant of alternate views and are fine with having a civil conversation. I am sure other states vary as well, but that has been my experience.

@@Diomedes01 Living in northwest Indiana near Chicago for most of my life, I agree with your assessment that these issues vary widely from state to state. We live 3 miles east of the IL/IN line on the southern fringe of the Chicago metro. Our county has lost population and jobs since the 1970s, while our particular town has grown by over three times since we moved here in 1989. Most of the growth is from former IL residents who still work in IL, but moved to IN for lower taxes. That being said...the road that most of them use to get to those jobs has a 30 mph speed limit that changes to 55 mph in Illinois--and the road in IL has been rebuilt and widened three times, versus just once for that same road on the IN side of the line! There is a downside to overly low taxes when infrastructure suffers. All that being said, the last time we were in SoCal in 2017, all of the roads there were in much better condition than those in the upper Midwest due to winter weather problems here.

I do know some of the reasoning, but never really talked about it in depth with my dad. Relocating a family is such a personal thing. As a child no family holidays in New Zealand to speak of. As an adult, here in Europe, the borders are close by and our caravan was magic. Now, we AirBnB generally. No more dragging the caravan behind us. Life styles indeed differ greatly country to country. I'm so glad you had the vision and clarity to choose what you did and when you did. It worked out really well by all accounts I feel. @@ThisIsOurRetirement Booster tomorrow, yes here too boosters for all above 18, think maybe they'll even offer it to the younger generation before schools go back. The lockdown will serve also to get those boosters done, before any tentative re-opening happens. Our Delta Covid numbers are dropping- this will ( hopefully) take the pressure off the hospitals should Omnicron causes more damage.
The holiday closure will be hard on businesses. I'll be cooking again this Christmas instead of our 'Dine out' turn. Schools closed early. Not having to deal with large family numbers or children or work from home, I have to admit the lockdown doesn't affect us as much as others. We can live without shops and restaurants for the time being.
My parents went to NZ hoping for a better future for us kids. It wasn't that overpopulated here at the time and we lived in a small township in a very healthy and wooded area, so there was no real mention of the problems of traffic etc. I guess lots of things contributed to my 'unrest' if you like. I feel at home in both countries - and my sabbatical has lasted 21 years to date. Oh for a crystal ball on occasions. Weekend was great, almost over. Time for a 🍷or 🍷🍷. So far the retirement ones have been pretty informative for me - it's coming up and I have to admit I am a little nervous having behaved like a lazy squirrel and didn't store up a lot of nuts for winter! But you made me feel better with your tips and info.
What you said about England is very interesting to me as both my parents emigrated in the 1950's before they met and married here. So a lot of my life has had an English twist to it. As a tourist I love going to England and seeing my relatives but I understand now unless you are pretty well off it can be quite difficult to live and really enjoy your life. I live in the GTA - I'm sure you know what that means! - and yes we have traffic but 2-3 hours jams!!?? No thanks. And in a pinch - yes it's expensive - but the 407 will take you right across Toronto very quickly.
A positive feature about the UK is it's quite easy to go to several countries in a short time whereas here, if you're driving, it will take you a day just to get out of Ontario! But the scenery is out of this world!

Thanks for sharing your experience. My husband also agrees with the blue skies vs grey. Regarding the UK tax vs Canada my husband was disappointed with the tax free allowance in Canada vs UK. He thought it would have been equivalent to $20,000 Cdn. which is £12,000+.

Interesting video and you two are very brave and adventurous to have left your home country. I live in the US and I too struggled for many years as a single man raising a family. Our vacations were always camping in a tent or backpacking or canoeing. In the US you either have to be a high earner or dual income family to live what you refer to as middle class. My niece married a British man and live in England and she is terribly home sick and hates the weather. They are both highly educated MIT and Harvard so money is not an issue. Money only fixes some things not the weather or being home sick. Take care.

Hi Scott sorry to hear about your niece the weather grey skies and rain ☔️ was so demoralizing it puts a negative feel on society, can they not look to move back we realize she’s American but as they are married that would make it easy for them to move back to the states 🇺🇸Cheers 🍷🇺🇸🇨🇦🍺

I've immigated to Canada (Edmonton) from the UK (South East) in 2009 also because of the weather (grey skies / gloom). After 4 years I've returned to London, and weather wasn't so much of a problem anymore (thinking about the 6 months of snow I had in Edmonton). Now actively looking to move to Algarve permanently.

Great video, thanks for sharing:)! After I finished watching, I started wondering how did you guys cope with the rest of your family living so far away from you? Was it tough? What was your approach to this issue? And did shorter holiday allowance (comparing with the UK) was hard to accept? Was it limiting? I think in Canada it is only two weeks and I always thought that is quite a big downside of living in Canada.

Holiday time generally increases with work experience and position. I have a very generous employer 5 wks vacn + flex time near the end of my career. 2 wks is usually for young people and low paying jobs. In Europe lots of people still have to work when others are taking their month holiday.

    Hi,
I moved to Alberta from Manchester back in 2000. A lot of reasons you refer echo my reasons for emigrating. Twenty years on I don’t see the same benefits in Canada as I once did, housing etc has become more expensive here too. I sometimes think about retiring back in the UK, especially during the long winters when we’re trapped in doors and I see my friends in the UK out in their motorcycles, bikes and walking in the green countryside, probably in the rain yes. :) Have you ever thought about moving back to the UK?

    • @ThisIsOurRetirement
      @ThisIsOurRetirement  2 года назад +6

We agree cheaper cars and houses have gone and winters are long and cold. Our visits to England only give a snapshot every 5 years or so and we didn't think it looked great around the Manchester/South Manchester area. The UK is cheaper for food now with more choices, Canada is quite limited with just 3 grocery chains. We did think about going to Scotland or East Anglia but we think we have left it too late. The process of moving back finding somewhere to live, getting a drivers licence, passport etc seems a lot of effort to do. The rain and grey Manchester days.........

Welcome to Canada! It's a big country and worth exploring. I love London as a tourist but wouldn't live in UK due to high cost of living and the damp weather. If you miss a sense of history and old world feel, try Quebec City.

Thank you for your honesty. I'm so glad you made your way here to Canada, when you obviously had other options. As a born and raised Canadian from the prairie provinces, I can tell you that Canada certainly has its downsides, but unless you've lived elsewhere, you have nothing to compare it to. Overall, I love my country, and like you, and am proud to be Canadian. Having said all that, in another 5 years, my wife and I will not be spending our winters here. We're still hoping to share that drink in the Algarve with you guys one day.
