  • We have the recently-announced Raspberry Pi 3! Patrick Norton stops by to discuss and show off the differences between the 3rd-generation Raspberry Pi and previous models, and demonstrate why this is the first time he's felt like the performance has been good enough to use for daily computing. Here's what you get for $35.

    • @DrussNL
      @DrussNL 8 лет назад

      +Kael There is too much to mention, just look online for the hundreds of project already done with the Pi 1 and 2. Then imagine what you could do with the more powerfull 3! Just one example, with a few of these you could implement domotica in your entire house on the cheap! I did a domotica project in relation to mental institutions for my education on a 1, but it couldn't even handle decoding a single low resolution camera stream... The motion sensor, lights, servo's and other sensors and actuators did actually perform pretty well so with the performance of the 3 it should be perfect.

    I just want to see it run some N64 titles on Retoropie and see if it's finally made that gap.

    • @guspaz
      @guspaz 8 лет назад

      +TheRealVastile I think it's kind of too early to say: it's an ARMv8 processor, which means it supports the new AArch64 (64-bit) instruction set. They're still only running it in 32-bit mode with AArch32, so you're losing the advantages of the new instruction set, the 64-bit operations, and unless stuff was recompiled for it, maybe vector/SIMD too (the Cortex A7 had it, but maybe stuff wasn't recompiled for it). Considering the N64 is a 64-bit console (albeit one that typically ran 32-bit code), an N64 emulator running on the Pi 3 isn't really going to be taking full advantage.

    • @Dragon69FlyTeam
      @Dragon69FlyTeam 8 лет назад

      +TheRealVastile it wont run n64 smoothley lots of stuttering even on low settings

    • @DamorahTalset
      @DamorahTalset 7 лет назад

      I was able to run PS1 games on the Pi 2, but not N64 games. The jump to 3 should be enough to run N64 games. The RAM is actually faster than the 2 despite being the same amount, and the CPU is also faster.

    You should look into the ODROID XU4. It costs around twice as much as the RPi3, but it's feature list is much more impressive, especially if you want a media server for example. It has an octacore processor, gigabit ethernet, 2GB ram, 2x USB 3.0 etc.

    if you're looking for idea's pat, there was a Quake 1 arcade machine with 4-way multiplayer. (4 linked cabinets.) I think using a trackball to aim. they're super uncommon and might be cool to make a few for the office with the new raspberr-pi.

    To be clear, the Raspberry Pi was never supposed to be a desktop replacement. It's an educational tool. The idea is that you buy a Raspberry Pi to learn how to set up computers to do a certain thing, and then you're only risking a $35 PC if you (or your kids) screw something up.From there, you're supposed to take what you've learned and apply it to "real" hardware.
    If you want a NAS, HTPC, or other single-purpose computer, buy a Raspberry Pi first, learn how to set up a computer to act as you need it to, and then build a real machine. You're much better off paying a bit more for something that will actually perform better.
    You'll get much better support, since you'll be on x86 instead of ARM and, most importantly, you'll be able to upgrade if you need to without literally tearing the system out and replacing it with a new one.

    According to the Raspberrypi.org article (here: www.raspberrypi.org/magpi/raspberry-pi-zero-production-getting-on-track/ - also published in issue 43 of The MagPi magazine), the unavailability of the Pi Zero is due to the Pi Zero being made in-house as opposed to any and all of the other models of Pi (which are assembled by RS Electronics and Farnell).

      Use a supercluster of these(look up tinkernut RPI supercluster) and you've got a very decent, or even higher than average console.

    I have the pi 2 and they are ok little things.. they do well for what they were meant to do. you can run xbmc on them and make a simple media center out of them or use them to browse the web and a few other simple tasks. they are not meant to be like a traditional home pc in power or performance.

    Pretty bummed that it now requires more than 2 amps to be stable. That means it shouldn't run off a battery pack. Shouldn't run off the usb port on your TV... Won't run off you PC usb port... Might still pick one up but I wish they were somehow able to keep the amp draw the same.

    How does the Minecraft Pi perform on the RPi3? You said it's equivalently powerful to P3. That's pretty bad for MC.

  • @Vampier
    @Vampier 8 лет назад

    I gave several pi's to friends to monitor their quality of service they got from their ISP... it's also great as SFTP/SSH and as a filtering DNS server (PiHole) the Rpi2 will do fine for this. I'll probably skip the Pi3 and wait for the next generation.

    • @RiJMC17
      @RiJMC17 8 лет назад

      +VampierMSX How did you manage to do that? I wrote a program or two for that purpose but it really just ping google.com. For the longest time I thought my ISP was making me lag when I realized it was people's iphones with icloud that kept uploading tons of stuff. I really couldn't make the difference between lag caused by my ISP or lag caused by other factors, I had to puzzle things out.

    • @Vampier
      @Vampier 8 лет назад

      +RiJMC17 I also ping several sites (8.8.8.8 for example) and take the minimal ping of the average ping. (if all are 0 then then connection is down)
      I understand that uploading will increase the ping times but it's more to see the anomalies in the connection. I used the google chart APIs to visualize the graphs.

    Two questions: What type of operating system can a Raspberry Pi use? Any kind? And would a Raspberry Pi be good for deep web stuff?

    • @TheNZJester
      @TheNZJester 8 лет назад

      +Jack St john It is an ARM processor so you need to run a ARM compatible OS. There are a number of Linux distributions that are ARM comparable. You can also get the Android OS and a version of Windows 10. Note that a lot of windows software designed for x86 systems will not run on the Pi even if you put windows 10 on it!

    Pi Zero had problems with supply because they were manufacturing them themselves, not through their partners that they usually use for other Pis. Totally separate factories, so Patrick's theory is incorrect.

    Interesting. Have a question, I pre-ordered the new DJI Phantom 4 and DJI tech services answered an email question I had that the P3 HDMI output module is not compatible with the P4's controller as of yet and no plans yet to make it.
    So, could I take the 720p controller output for cell phone/tablet and route it through the Raspberry Pi 3 to my tablet and then at same time WiFi or HDMI out a signal to a recording device or TV similar to DJI Module accessory but it would be external set-up ?

      Stephan Fabry Good, I don't want my hands near a running stove. Then again, running emulators probably won't run it that hard and the 100C could be from it being a server or a miner.
