  • In 2003 my late father gave away the favorite car he ever owned, a 1985 Opel Monza GSE, registration B400 WBM. It had failed its MOT And the cost of the required work was more than the (then) value.
The deal was the people who took the car would restore it themselves and he's only stipulation was that they would return and show him the car when done.
He never saw that car again and subsequently often spoke of his regret at his decision.
Eight years later I undertook the task of locating a replacement. Even in 2011 they were rare, and those in good condition, even rarer. After a few months I did locate what I believed to be a pristine example of an already restored Monza GSE. It was however almost as far away as it could be while still being in the UK, Kirkcaldy, Scotland.
The following is a video I made and believed lost due to a failed hard drive, of the journey to buy and collect that car, registration C400 HSD, and surprise my dad with it.
Along for the ride was my good friend Jared (Channel 4’s “Bike Boy”) who met me at Kings Cross on the back of an heavy “all-nighter”.
