Hey all! This is my contribution to ToolFest, an event put on by Emma over at Emma's Spareroom Machine Shop.
In keeping with my usual theme of making life easier in unnecessarily complicated ways, I've decided to turn an early-20th-century Brown and Sharpe no. 738 indicator into a 3D probe. It's somewhere in between a standard edge finder, and a Haimer 3D taster. I've got no plans or this one, I'm just making it up as I go along.
    Here's a video from Haimer, on their 3D Taster: • The HAIMER 3D-Sensor: ...
Many thanks to Emma, for hosting this event. Cheers!

Great video sir! Wish I had found your channel much earlier. I just installed a DRO with glass scales on my little 7 x 16 lathe. The TouchDRO looks like a really nice system and would have been easier to work with. Keep up the great work!

      Thanks so much!
You can likely use TouchDRO with the scales you installed. If the scales connect with DB9 connectors, all you need is the correct adapter board from Yuriystoys, and a cheap Android tablet. The user interface of the app is far, far better than the displays that usually come with inexpensive DRO kits.

Smeller, eh? Clever, I see what you did there. I have little technical German in my head, and a few years ago I had to look up what a “taster” was (more exactly, Heidenhain’s Meßtaster) because of a Craigslist ad. Enjoyed this ToolFest post!

Great idea on this. I gotta say I really love your DRO pip in the video

Thank you very much! I thought it would be cool if people could really follow along with what I'm doing, rather than me just talking about it, and disembodied button beeps.
It's one of the neat side benefits of TouchDRO... Because it uses a tablet for the readout display, I can use a screen recording app.

Very cool tool! Love it. Interesting to see your DRO in action. The Newall DRO on my Colchester lathe is so old that Newall don't have any records of the circuit of the controller. I think that with a bit of hardware hacking, I could get an output into a microcontroller and feed an app on a tablet. Maybe even emulate the scales to feed TouchDRO. I do have a Haimer, but I still use a friction edge-finder sometimes.

      Thanks!
The scales on your current DRO might be compatible with the TouchDRO board. It's worth checking out the forum at yuriystoys.com to see if they are... Then all you need is the TouchDRO adapter board and a cheap tablet!

@@fna-wrightengineering I'll have a look, but the hardware needed to read these ancient Newall Spherosyns might be a bit tricky, they are inductive, something like an LVDT, so no quadrature output as such. I'd hate to lose them because they are coolant-proof and almost impossible to wreck. Even for me. Maybe.

3D Smeller :) That's awesome. I like your tool library stuff too. New sub here! I will go and check out what else your channel has after catching up on some more toolfest videos.

Thanks so much! I'm still learning how to best use it, and adding more and more tools. My lathe and shaper will also have their own libraries.
I also have another B&S 738 indicator, which I plan to put to similar use on the shaper.
I'll be doing plenty of catching up on toolfest vids, myself. Appreciate the sub!

Way beyond my pay grade and my feeble analog brain but I can see why this is a good idea👍

      I appreciate the accolades!
Give yourself due credit! Having watched your toolfest vid, I can definitely say that nothing I've done, is outside your capabilities. Outside your current knowledge set, maybe, but that's easily remedied. Keep learning, and keep making cool shit!
