  • www.crosstraini... Enduro incontinence moments. Today there are two situations where I was tempted to wet my pants. Did you see Johnny Walker underwater at Romaniacs trapped underneath his motorbike? Thankfully a photographer jumped in to help him. I have a nasty little phobia about this. Trapped underwater and hoping the next rider pulls the motorbike off me before I drown. Into enduro riding? See all our dirt bike videos for dirt riding tips. Our channel now had hundreds of dirt bike videos covering reviews, and enduro riding techniques. Search our channel for dirt riding gear too. Our dirt riding tips also include wider topics such as the best dirt riding boots. There are two situations on this ride that triggered my phobia very nicely. But first, check out this track! Slippery. Off camber. And a few off camber logs. I had a lot of trouble on this log the first time. Today? No problems. Problem number one! This big tree root has been notched to provide traction. This should prevent the motorbike and rider slipping into the creek. But there's clay on the track too. The other guys hit this with speed and avoided the drama. But I automatically imagine myself sliding down, the motorbike trapping me underwater, and I drown while everyone stands above me laughing. Let's see how Scott handles this. I wonder if Scott would normally just ride over that tree root with no problems. I probably slowed him down and actually made the situation more difficult! Our next problem? The bridge! It's wet. Several planks have broken screws and our now completely loose. And there are planks completely missing at the end of the bridge. Again, there's the small chance of falling and being trapped underwater by the motorbike. Not my favourite outcome. Zero problems. These little phobias are interesting! Since the spine fracture I get anxious on steep descents nowadays. Sometimes I walk the motorbike down steep slopes that I used to ride down. And I get a bit anxious when there's even the slightest chance of being trapped underwater. This is probably due to almost drowning in my surfing days. Do you have any scenarios that worry you more than the average rider? What caused it? How do you deal with it? Keen to hear about your experiences. I find this stuff very interesting at the moment... sadly because of a recent death. I won't go into any details yet, but I was involved in a ride where a guy had a fairly basic accident but died immediately on impact. Me and two riding buddies were first at the scene and went through CPR until the paramedics finally arrived. Death has a way of really making you think about the big questions. How much risk should I take to get my thrills when riding? Do I have enough protective gear? In a potentially risky situation, should I just hit the throttle and ignore the anxiety? I faced all these questions after my spine fracture... and even did a few videos about it. And this recent death has raised all these questions again.

NOTE: In the video I refer to a moment when Jonny Walker went over the bars on a steep descent and was pinned under water until a camera man pulled the bike off him. A few viewers have questioned this, and one pointed out this happened to Colton Haaker so I may have my riders mixed up.

Blind turns on two track or fire roads always get to me. You never know when some yahoo is drifting their side x side in your direction.
Currently recovering from a severe ankle break, so I'll likely have different fears when I return to riding.

I actually experienced this when a guided dual sport ride came through a blind curve. KTM rider target fisacted and headed straight for me, I wound up in a ditch, luckily the amazing bike pulled me out o the situation. 10 minutes later caught my other half who had the same experience with the same KTM.

Thirty years ago, I had microfracture surgery on my right knee from mountain biking. It didn't stop me, but I inadvertently taught myself the Right Sided Bailing Ejection when things got wicked. In fact, I got so good at the technique that I flung myself off a dropoff and got the prize-winning five broken ribs. Judges did downgrade me a bit for not impaling my body on the spikey dead log, though. Tough crowd

I've ruined knees that like to twist and tear in various ways at the slightest provocation. I therefore absolutely despise things like stalling the bike and tipping over the wrong way down the hill... Instead of putting my leg down to try and stay upright I rather let myself tumble head first down the hill. It's a pretty effective tactic for both saving my knees and for getting laughed at.
An unrelated thing that's horrible are small to medium size greasy logs (well, branches or roots) that are at an 45+ degree to the trail, especially on downhills. I always find a way to panic on those and get either of my wheels to slide along the full length of the long obstacle, resulting in very attractive crashes.

    • @crosstrainingenduro

Have to love those greasy angled logs for good video footage lol. I've got dodgy knees now too... even with braces I hate all tip overs in case I put a leg out and jar or twist it the wrong way.

I ride alone a lot, and you're making me re-consider riding across even simple river crossing's as opposed to walking the bike across (me upstream). I think its good advice and I thank you, because "Expect to self rescue. No-one is coming" is the reality in the deserts and mountains of California.
    My phobia's?
    Exposure.
    Not cold, but steep drops.
I really don't see the point of taking such a risk when all it would take is a flame out and you're off to the valley without a parachute.
Still, it'll probably be the speed that gets me, and I'm not frightened of that at all.

Some of the very steep descents (think King of Moto''s descents) in the desert southwest with exposure sometimes trigger me. There's no stopping once you get going so you're committed to hitting huge rocks and ledges at a good pace while looking straight down, lol.

On steep slopes falling sideways headfirst into brutal rain ruts when you're riding the narrow elevation to try and stay out of them, wide enough for you to get in, narrow enough to stay stuck there with the bike on top.
My first crash ever was overcooking a sharp corner on tarmac in the mountains. After that for a few years during emergency braking, especially downhill, I'd get a cold tingling feeling in my stomach that would go up my spine and make me feel lightheaded. Since then PTSD made more sense to me and how one can have no control over it. With time the reaction went away.

I'm 27 and ride enduro alone alot as my main form of fitness (mind and body). I've been riding dirtbikes (mostly) and roadbikes for about a decade now and obviously have had a few close calls and a handful of faster enduro offs where it's been luck more than skill & gear that kept me without broken bones or worse when I reflect on them. I'm an engineer/professional where labouring to death over 'risk' is our bread and butter and riding is always an activity where I don't know what I'd do without it but also has me regularly becoming quite philosophically into the way I ride, specific risks I take on rides and reflecting occasionlly after the adrenaline wears off. Knee braces, quality boots, composite, multi density eps, antirotational tech helmets and trying to focus on slower enduro/cross training style challenges to get the enjoyment from riding rather than balls out speed are all things I hope will keep me alive and mobile into old age but I certainly understand the phobias events you refer to - for some reason breaking a femur is one of my worst fears from doing a poorly timed/too fast or unwise recovery dab at pace and one that also gives me that goosebump/shock feeling when scenarios I think play out wherethose kind of injuries occur. That's a confronting experience having to deal with an accident/first response and death Barry, no doubt it would rock me and have me hyper-analysing my own decsion making too. Interesting vid :)

    • @crosstrainingenduro

I think my biggest fear with a broken femur is asking another guy to put his hand in my crotch lol. A few years back a driver cut me off, I hit a fence, flipped over and slid down an embankment. Instant massive swelling of my thigh so I suspected a femur break. I told this passing cyclist if I pass out it could be a nick in the femoral artery and he'd need to apply lots of pressure uncomfortably close to my, er, boys. Thankfully it was just a massive bruise. 😗

Definitely a legitimate concern if riding in/near water. A well known rider in my area was killed this way years ago. I have heard other stories of riders trapped this way as well but luckily rider partners helped them out. I'd say if you are ridng near water like this better not to ride alone. Other than that just ride and no worries.

I agree with you whole heartedly on the water trap issue. I have been pinned under my bike many times and had to await rescue. Even with the thoughts of a broken limb and pinned on dry ground I can wait a long time for rescue if need be, not so much if I my head is under water. I was once stuck under the 690 face down after going down in a puddle that was 6 inches deep while at the time I was not in danger of drowning, but it certainly came to mind that any deeper or if the angle and slope of the bike was keeping me down lower it could have been bad or at least a very real struggle to keep my head up.
Yes janky bridge crossings over water always give me a bit of a nervous feeling, you never know how long that bridge is going to keep my fat arse over the span or if it is so slick that I just ride into it. Did this once while trail running where I took a nose dive and landed on the edge of the bridge and then rolled into the gully, again fortunate. Water is absolutely unforgiving!

I recently had about 1/3 of my left ring finger distal phalanx bone amputated due to a really stupid rider error (got the fingertip ripped off after being caught between the clutch lever and the handlebar). I took a break from riding for about 6 weeks (just enough time for it to heal) and went right back to it. Whatever fears I had were gone in time for the Corduroy enduro not even two months later. The thought that it was so statistically unlikely to happen and that I can prevent it in the future by developing my clutch skills, is enough for me not to worry about it. It did give a greater sense of riding safely from the perspective of avoiding riding alone and preparing myself to the best of my ability (carrying a small first aid kit).

Didn’t know it was a phobia until it happened, or at least this encounter caused it. I was riding the in the mountains east of San Diego by myself, and having a great ride exploring a new area. On my way back to my truck, I said to myself, “man it would suck if someone came ripping up this trail. I have nowhere to go but down the side of this mountain.” No sooner I said that, it happened. I rounded a left bend in the trail, and I was immediately met with a rider barreling up the singletrack. His handlebar clipped my left elbow, which ripped my hand off the bars, and I nearly went sailing off the cliff. Narrowly escaping a true disaster, I will rarely ride alone anymore. Especially in a new riding area.

That would freak me out as well. We have two way trails in Michigan that are tight, and I was coming downhill around a blind left hander and another rider was coming up with some speed, I leaned to the right almost falling down a hill, and they ran right into me trapping my left foot and stopping me essentially. Blind turns, especially on hills mess with me a little now, so I just try to keep my speed under control, stay to the right if I can, and look as far ahead as possible.

I have no idea how this happened but I fell off a steep hillside trail, below and leg under the bike the bike on dry grass and slid down into a ravine where I was pinned. The more I struggled, the further I slid down and I was at an awkward angle where I couldn’t lift the bike and my boot was hooked on something where I couldn’t kick it off.
If my son didn’t turn around to come looking for me, I have no idea how anyone would have spotted me down that hill even if they happened upon that lonely trail.

Trapped under water is a big one for me! The other is falling while loading and having the handle bar or footpeg stab me. . I recently sold all my trail bikes, except my '76 Elsinore 125, and purchased a Beta Explorer. I did this because the Explorer is 150lbs, electric, and incredibly easy to ride and load. Riding gooey greasy trails can demolish one's confiodence, but being able to pick up the bike multiple times turns it into a giggle fest instead of a sphincter challenge.

Overshooting steep downhill corners & sending it off the mountain side on the heavy adv bike. 😳 Handled by ALWAYS ensure abs is off road mode & start descents with speed well in control. You can always go faster if you want, but you can always slow those pigs down soon enough.

I do get much more careful. Cliffs; long steep downs. With time, and as a rule of thumb, I go motorbike riding. Which means when I´d be a faster offroader in bipede jogging modus, I leave the 120kg metall ballast at the foot of the trail or at home. Two weeks ago I went on goat trails south of Italian dolomites, and the friend and guide had the same spirit, so lots of steps and inclines, the occasional mutual help or second try, but mostly RIDING.

Definitely worry about getting impaled by broken trees / branches. Neck area is not well protected.
I try to wear as much protection as I can, even though it takes about 30 minutes to get dressed before a ride lol. Knee braces, good boots, body armor and obviously a helmet leave most of my body covered though.
Considered wrist braces to avoid hypertension but then I'll just be Iron Man at that point. Maybe I'll get some chain mail for my neck 😂

Totally admire your determination skipper for getting through but for me not worth it, Paddling( to some extent) through a potentially life or bike ending journey is not your best acheivment. Many other things i have seen you do in the vids are advanced and your skills are good.IMHO better to do these tracks far away from a deep river or cliff edge. Thanks for the video,it may save my life one day⚠

Your riding mates wouldn't stand there laughing as you drown, they would be getting out their phones to get a video of you struggling trying to not drown... But they would jump right in to help after you don't come up for air. Probably in time to save you. Maybe...
My fear is getting seriously injured and unable to ride or even walk out since I ride alone
I wish I had friends to ride with but it rarely works out.
With Spot, Inreach, cell phones, and other aids it isn't like the old days, but that's my worry anyway.

Understood and completely fair. You have to get decent photos and video first, even if your buddy has multiple compound fractures and pass out from arterial bleeding. 😂

Things that put fear into me:
    - Deep water crossings
    - Steep and long hill climbs that I almost make to the top
    - Trails next to steep drop offs
    - Eating anything that I know will make me poop my pants
    - Pooping my pants in public ( I actually enjoy it in private)
    - Seeing the look on my wife's face when I come limping in the house after a ride.

I went down a step incline into the creek - bike on top of me in water over my head. I was so concerned about the bike that I forgot about any danger to myself.
Fortunately it was an electric bike and I rode it out and home without any issues.

I am mostly apprehensive about hitting other riders head on in tight single track. Luckily a lot of the places I ride are under the radar to most people and you never seem to see anyone. Sometimes you really get going out there and remember that another rider could be right around the next corner and you wont have time to stop

Two scenarios get me. Overtaking the crest of a hill at speed is one. Reason being is this is how I had a head on with another rider and fractured three vertebrae, bulged a disc, and got a concussion that took over a year for all the aftereffects to go away. Second, anything that involves some decent height and I can fall off of like your little rooted trail with a creek below situation. Why? I don't know. Heights get to me now and I don't understand why. I use to fly open cockpit ultralights without issue! Ugh.

    • @crosstrainingenduro

Weird how things can change over time. Heights can unnerve me a bit nowadays, although zero issues when I was into rock climbing 30 years ago...
