Why this show is not rebooted is really beyond me. It is the first show to have a killer-sci fi theme (seasons 1 & 2) and damn... those eagles, the transporter, moon-base alpha. There was nothing like it before this show came along which still looks cool to this very day.
I agree. The modular ships were ( and still are ) a great innovation where parts can be swapped out as needed ( and they made good use of this design to advance the plot in some episodes ) Even the other ships they encounter are very cool and have lots of unique features.
Hallucinatory and haunting. The Space 1999 interiors have to be some of the most compelling science fiction spaces on film. A strange Anglo-Italian design universe. There is something disturbing about them, these endless white corridors. Some of that is from Kubrick, I think. They are also somehow completely believable.
Like Kubrick's works, it might be the total lack of people. In 2001, we had a mammoth spacecraft with just two people, here we have a base that is fully operational, but with no crew operating. These would make great virtual sets.
@@jmcenanly1 Yes, you are definitely onto someting there. In the series itself there were several sequences exploring an empty or a near empty Alpha. What is the German word? Unheimlich, uncanny in English, although that does quite catch the sense in the German of the familiar-unfamiliar.

The moon buggy is my favorite part of that. I got to drive one about 50 years ago when I was a kid. Most people don’t know the moon buggy was an off-the-shelf "Amphicat" made by "Mobility Unlimited" in Auburn Hills, Michigan, about 30 miles from where I grew up. Dad's cousin had one, and when a whole bunch of the extended family vacationed in Caseville, Michigan he brought it. They cost $900 in 1970 money. His was the original red. The Andersons had theirs painted yellow. Added bonus: the Amphicats are more famous as the "Banana Buggies" from the "Banana Splits Show".
Great video! I love how you combined our current-generation flat-panel video displays with Space:1999 graphics, internal set designs, furnishings, and the series' music and sound effects. Beautifully done! Those displays look like they belong in Main Mission. The provisional "moonbase" design and layout are very logical and fascinating. It would be neat to combine elements of this with the current-day notion of 3D-printed lunar regolith-concrete sheltered "cave" structures to protect against solar radiation, cosmic rays and micrometeoroids to form a different kind of moonbase. Or it would be interesting to show a different "basecamp Beta" that was built within either a subterranean lava tube or deep inside a mountain cave. I can't help wondering how Space: 1999's Centauri Space Dock Space Station would look if envisioned vaguely through a combined Space: 1999 and Artemis / Gateway Space Station lens. Would it combine a rough rotating section with microgravity non-rotating segments? It would be fascinating to envision this as it's own orbiting, virtual "moonbase", complete with Eagles or other ships docked there.
Ye, gods, my man. This was fantastic. It looked, sounded, and felt like an old '70s era set ... but not in a cheesy, low-budget way. Absolutely loved it, esp. the way you tied in the quick-cut method to the intro theme. Nicely done. This is an IP someone needs to bring back, goofy premise though it was. Make it a moon of Jupiter or something.

Thank you so much for sharing your talent and energies to this much beloved subject. My hope is that someone can draw upon your stellar work as a proof of concept for a series reboot.
Thank you for noticing! I will say I was impressed with the Year 2 "Bringers of Wonder" set of the nuclear waste "dome" (really a big hallway) with the red arches - which influenced the second pod interior in the video.
@@nel1962 Thanks! The short answer is about a month and a half from when I started playing with the computer models. I'm embarrassed to say I have a very non-linear process. I started thinking about deploying a moon buggy from an Eagle passenger module as I wasn't happy with what I did with the buggy for my Eagle walkthrough video. So I worked with that a bit, and then got distracted thinking about the original Generator set, and then I remembered a sketch I did years ago of a generating area built within an Eagle pod - so these videos evolve through play. Space 1999 has such a a strange place in my memory. Its Sci Fi that 'devolved' into weird British fantasy/sci fi mix with mystical aliens, telepathy and magical powers: the sort of thing that Babylon 5 did but better. The music, the Eagle spacescraft, the uniforms . . .all bring back fond but slightly puzzled memories.
Stunningly beautiful, spectacular use of colors, and incredible attention to detail and sound. This brings life to what Moonbase Alpha could look like if ever given a reboot.
Cool video! They did great on the sets, and uniforms. I love the show, though it got quiet many times and could have used more soundtrack like you have here on your video 😉 and like the rumble bass tones … more of that would have sparked it up more, but regardless, it was tops. 👍
Fantastic. Your attention to detail is incredible. The use of Eagle pods to make the moon base … love it. This makes the whole concept credible. It also means that the base can just grow and grow over time. I like the fact that you have incorporated most of the original tech from the series - the desk lighting, the doors to name but a few. I can only imagine the computing power you must have to be able to render. This is an incredible amount of work and design that you’ve gone into. Greatly appreciate this and have had to pause the vid so often to study all of the detail that you’ve included. There are just so many hidden gems.
May I just say...this is truly wonderful. Magnificent detail and even modern flat-screen. Sincere thanks for bringing back an old man to Moonbase Alpha.

You re-created the distinctive futuristic sets and strangely enchanting music which made Space:1999 such a pleasure to watch, with some excellent touches of your own. Well done!
Thanks for noticing. Though I love the radial / circular look of the original moonbase plan, I never liked the travel tube plan (seen in the Moonbase Alpha Technical Notebook) as it split buildings in 2, the central terminal had 13 ports - architecturally it was a mess. Plus how difficult it is to build anything in space - add to that the Eagles are designed to carry pods - it made sense to me to redo the base as clusters of Eagle pods and geodesic domes. And the Travel Tube is redone to be more like a above ground light rail. In this video, the concept is that the Generating area is at least several kilometers away from the base for safety.
@@TedRivers-1999 The decentralisation makes a certain amount of operational sense to my brain. Updating six months later to add some more thoughts...I have to wonder about the design choices and scheduling for building upward, outward and downward for the Moonbase as we saw it depicted on screen. The base was constructed over *at least* a decade, and there would have been work in progress over all of that time. Your "Eagle pods and domes" alternative looks like it would have been easier on budgeting and supply contractors at every step.

I love, love, love your work. I hope to one day be able to take a virtual tour of the entire Alpha Moonbase. Your design work compliments what came before and makes this Universe shine and continue on....thanks for all you do!!!
Oh Ted, what a wonderful modernisation of a classic TV show. I loved your cylindrical interpretation of the Travel Tube Interior. I struggled with how my version would fit in the circular tunnels but in the end I went with a literal reproduction of the original set and ignored how it might work with the exterior models :-) For me it was a joy to see many of your props littered around the place as I’ve been through the same process with my project. Just this weekend I added a few of those circular Gustavsberg salad bowls not to mention the red Heuer clipboard, the white radiation scanner, the Commlock, the various cups, the coloured paperwork, and of course the Moon Buggy :-) I know that I’m biased but have you thought about creating a Virtual Reality environment from all of your amazing content? I think you might be surprised at how much geometry you can fit into a real time game engine like Unity or Unreal. I’m not a game developer and even though I do struggle a bit with Unity, I’ve managed to make it work and boy is it rewarding to see your creations in VR at their full scale glory :-)
Hello! Thanks for your kind words! Yikes! We are living the same life! Your VR work is outstanding!!! Your recreations are incredible! I work in Autocad and 3dsMax, and don't know much about Unity or Unreal, but I am amazed at their processing power. What kind of system are you running, and how do you model your enviroments?
@@TedRivers-1999 Hi Ted, the most crucial component on my VR computer is the graphics card, everything else can be relatively modest. For the longest time I got by pretty well with an Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti but I have to admit to being quite spoiled at the moment with an Nvidia RTX 3090 :-) Like you, I prefer to use architectural modeling software and so I use MicroStation for all of my modeling and texturing and then I export that to Unity via the FBX file format. The workflow is seamless as I can iterate on my design as much as I like and simply replace old FBX files with new ones without loosing any of the work that I’ve already done in Unity. I’ve made a few attempts to get into Unreal but the Unity workflow just seems to suit me much better. The whole process is very iterative but all of my environments start off with me drawing some rudimentary plans and elevations where I try to establish the correct scale and proportion based on known variables such as the height of an actor standing next to a door. This is only possible because of the high quality screen captures that I’m able to get from the Blu-Ray disks but once that is done I model the basics in 3D and use that to do a perspective match on many of the screen captures. When I have a good match I know that my dimensions are pretty close to those of the actual set but when I can’t get a good consistent match I know that something is off with my dimensions and so I go back and look at what I need to adjust. Once I’m happy with the overall model, that gives me the confidence to go in and add some of the finer details and before you know it, it all feeds back on itself and you end up making a VR project that goes far beyond what you envisioned in the beginning. It’s been a wonderful journey and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed learning Unity and the VR workflow :-)
@@novaclade8307 Thanks very much for explaining your process. You have mastered it beautifully! I really appreciated your note about comparing an actor's height to a door - my entire scaling process started with Martin Landau standing in the Eagle cockpit door way - the travel tube car was the first thing I modeled in this 1999 CGI journey.
@@TedRivers-1999 That’s so funny, maybe we should consider Martin Landau our standard candle. I used a version of him standing in the Main Mission entry alcove to establish a scale for that set and now I’m using him as he stands in the interior of the Eagle Passenger Pod to recreate that set. I’m almost done with this latest round of additions and hopefully I’ll be able to post an update to the VR project in a week or two, just in time for the release of the Moonbase Alpha Technical Operations Manual :-)
@@novaclade8307 Lol! Nice. I have worked in the trade show / exhibition stand industry for years, and a standard wall panel size we use is 47"wide x 94"high, so I built my wall panel system based on that, but yes, I think I used Prentis Hancock's hip as a rough check on the height / proportion of the standard wall unit!

This really was a great show. It's a little dated and cheesy by today's standards, but I actually liked the ships from this way better than Starwars. The physics were way better, closer to reality, though they still went "PEW PEW!" every time they fired a laser. And of course there were the engine noises, etc. But the toy ships, OMG! REAL metal- like a space ship SHOULD be! The design of the Eagles was meant for space- super lightweight tubes which formed a skeleton like structure within which you could plug in anything you wanted- modular design. Starwars on the other hand, well those ships were designed to fly in atmosphere- not space. And the Star Destroyers looked more like flat tops then space ships. Before anyone corrects me, yes I know what Lucas was going for, the looks, the WW2 stuff- and I have no problem with that. But Space 1999- what a show. It felt way more gritty, way closer to real- even though I knew we would not return to the moon by 1999. But hey, a kid can dream. I had two of the die cast Eagles from the series. One was a fighter and the other was a cargo module carrier that worked exactly like a heavy lift helicopter that has the middle taken out. You could drop the module off, fly back to base and when ready for pickup, you just fly back, land atop the module and you are off. The hours of fun I had playing with those! The fighter Eagle even shot a small red missile- something utterly banned now.

I struggled with how my version would fit in the circular tunnels but in the end I went with a literal reproduction of the original set and ignored how it might work with the exterior models :-)
For me it was a joy to see many of your props littered around the place as I’ve been through the same process with my project. Just this weekend I added a few of those circular Gustavsberg salad bowls not to mention the red Heuer clipboard, the white radiation scanner, the Commlock, the various cups, the coloured paperwork, and of course the Moon Buggy :-)
I know that I’m biased but have you thought about creating a Virtual Reality environment from all of your amazing content?
For the longest time I got by pretty well with an Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti but I have to admit to being quite spoiled at the moment with an Nvidia RTX 3090 :-)
Like you, I prefer to use architectural modeling software and so I use MicroStation for all of my modeling and texturing and then I export that to Unity via the FBX file format.
Fantastic work, great design. I want to see more.
Brilliant work - well done. Any more in the pipeline?
dude what is going on giving me goose bumps like that! if Babylon 5 is up for a remake dammit Space: 1999 should be too! Netflix where are you! Well done! 👏👏👏👊
Thanks!
Que buen trabajo , espectacular, ojala hicieran una serie respetando la esencia.
I love how Moonbase Alpha still uses Jigers
I just got the Alpha Ops Manual, and love it!
Beautiful work! Wonderfully done!!!!!
Excellent! Kind of creepy with no people and things just working away...Erie.
Congratulations.
Amazing rendering, wish we could add theses shots to the serie or at least ehanced the 1975 serie.
Excellent work!!!
Thanks!
Love little touches like the coffee cup.
This is so very cool.
Too cool, I watched the first episode in 1975 on the French chanel TF1
I remember watching the show when it came out, hated when it was cancelled.
Die Settings gefallen mir sehr gut.
Awesome work.
A really cool video of the power station on alpha. I'd love a job there. ❤️ 👍 ❤️ A really good video. ❤️
Excellent work 😁👍
This really was a great show.
Gran trabajo.
Me ha gustado mucho😊
Well done.
Greatest sci fi show of all time.
Magnificent!
