Important note is that Dumbledore's objective was never to defeat Voldemort during this battle. His only objective was to ensure that the Ministry of Magic saw Voldemort with their own eyes.
Voldemorts presence being shown to the ministry was just a bonus, Dumbledore’s objective was saving Harry from getting killed
@Ryan Meldrum Nah. Dumbledore knew the "prophecy". He knew Harry would be fine.

@@sasys8nEveryone is talking about how great Headmaster Dumbledore's entrance was (and it was EPIC) but the way Tom sort of materializes out of the shadows, laughing & looking truly unhinged, is a very nice touch as well. And the voice over of him slithering into Harry's mind as he's standing over Bellatrix...it's just a perfect mix of sinister and creepy. It really encapsulates the way Riddle moves and operates: in the shadows of the darkness of one's mind, a perversion and twisted rationale of unhinged despair, fear & loathing. It's beautiful.

Can we just take a moment to appreciate the sound design here. Really brings the spells and magic to life
Great comment, sound is always completely underappreciated. Someone (the whole team) had to come up with what these spells even sound like, then craft it convincingly, movies would be nothing without sound and yet they are invisible to the average viewer which means they did their job perfectly. Still nice to show some appreciation though.
Absolutely incredible work. The SFX are spine tingling. Every element from wand flick, ambient and elemental to brief pause is truly some of the best sound design I have ever witnessed. I can only imagine just how many layers make up each single 'compiled' effect. Truly staggering.
This STILL gives me goosebumps. Probably one of the most iconic fights in film history.

@@JadenMoon1475 Oh lovely, and the story would've ended there. What an interesting story arch.

Spartan Fruze they aren’t talking about it in a readers perspective they’re talking about it in a real stand point
What I love about this fight is how absolutely creative it is. Most spell battles in the series are just simple light flinging battles, but in this we get to see both fighters utilize creative and powerful spells.
It's even better in the books. More powerful wizards and witches use magical skills like charms, conjuring and transfiguration when dueling instead of straightforward combat spells. Can't wait for the HBO Max remake - they're going to stay true to the books.
@AkhenatenGames You do realize that the first 2 were already adapted about as accurately as can be done already? The only real differences of significance was that the Devil Snare was vulnerable to light not flame, cut out Snape and Quirrel's protections, and Neville being in the forest instead of Ron. Chamber of Secrets I think it was just Penelope Clearwater/Percy Weasley.
@@akhenatengames Is HBO Max gonna do it a decade long web series????
It's way more creative in the books. Although this is very well done and super well choreographed and the sounds are just spot on, that wand flutter from Dumbledore is just insane.
J. K. Rowling said it is impossible to put everything from her book into a movie in under 4 hours! Also I think it is a dumb idea to make a movie exactly like a book is, cause if you read the book then the movie is spoiled. Remember watching, "Half-blood Prince" and this woman sitting next to me kept going, "That didn't happen in the book and I kept thinking, "Go read the fucking book then and stop watching!"
4:46, the look of terror on Voldemort's face when he realizes he can't beat Dumbledore is incredible.
I never really see it as terror, though I see what you mean, I see it more in the line of
"Oh... I really can't beat him.... Thats supposed to be impossible!"
@@LordyT34 he literally turned glass into sand means he went back in time
It looked more like anger and frustration to me. Most people die faster when he faces them, he isn’t used to having his attacks so consistently repelled.
Kinda funny knowing this is the first and last time they dueled, and Voldemort chose not to do it again. Seems like he doesn’t enjoy it when his potential victim can fight back with such power.
@G E T R E K T Yeah I think it’s kind of psychopathic pragmatism: either Draco dies as Lucius’ punishment or there is a happy coincidence and Draco actually manages to kill Dumbledore, sparing Voldemort from going through that unbearable dreadful thing called a fair fight.
Yeah thats what made Tom so dangerous. He uses weapons that are psychologically damaging. He knows sending draco, one of his students would be like an Achilles heel of Dumbledore. Voldy fights dirty. He knows Dumbledores weakness and Dumbledore knows voldy's weakness.

- Phineas Nigelles Black (in the book)
This moment was so much deeper in the books. Harry losing it on Lupin because he was hurt that Sirius died. Forgetting that Lupin just lost his final friend. The last of the group of boys that made him feel like he belonged, for the first time in his life. The group that not only made him feel accepted, but embraced. The only people that, up until that point, made him feel happy.
Will you guys shut up for once and spare us peasants? My Lord? Please sir!
The books is deeper than the movies at every turn
@DyslexicTurtle that's a movie only scene. I'm the books, Harry tries to use Crucio on Bellatrix, but it has little effect. And then she stops teasing him like a child and gets serious because he used an unforgiveable curse on her. She's the one who tells Harry he had to mean it in the books. She tells him he has to really want to cause pain suffering.
One thing I always found really cool about this scene is how their battle is like a battle of all the classical elements. They use Earth, Air, Fire and Water against each other.
Whats even more impressive is that in the books its stated that Dumbledore wasn't even duelling to kill or even harm Voldemort he was defending to keep Harry alive if you notice all of his spells here a defensive and he's calm throughout their whole battle whereas Voldemort is giving it his all to defeat and kill and Dumbledore easily counters them. Even the death eaters fled when Dumbledore arrived at the battle
@@wickedwitchoftheeast88Oh? Why would you go up against someone and not bother to take him down? That doesn't make sense. And Dumbledore wasn't all that defensive in the fight. Ignore the movie, it doesn't explain anything. Dumbledore was advancing on Voldemort and, at some point, he even attacked with a nonverbal spell.
"It was foolish of you to come here tonight Tom." The most savage quote, Voldemort can't beat Dumbledore .
Why didn't he call him "Tommy"?

Because they actually tried to impress and do better. I watched the making offs and it was crazy how much effort they put into those movies
It's because professionals in pretty much every area are actually turning out worse than they were before, thus quality tends to decay more and more.
*3:35** You can see the fear in Dumbledore's face. So many people don't even realize how hard it is to even cast this curse and even harder to control it.*

Nice catch, a true teacher's love to his student.
The teacher never stops teaching.
I think it is more than disappointment. Dumbledore is disgusted by Voldemort
I remember getting to this part of the book as I read them all but two on day of release; thinking holy shit this is it…. because I had pictured Dumbledore completely different… Like a quirky Mr. Miagi/ Gandalf type. So as I started to read I would pause and lay back and just picture and visualize the scene… Sooooooo much better in my minds eye. Whenever Voldemort cast the first killing curse and Dumbledore simply disapparates and reappears….. I’ll never forget that …….. I paused, I created the scene in my mind …. Went and got a coke and made some popcorn thinking holy shit this about to happen.
The silence during Harry’s grief and Bellatrix’s immediate facial response is amazing.
She is actually surprised that someone is affected so much by someone else’s death. She felt something there

LITERALLY CHILLS WHEN DUMBLEDORE SHOWS UP LIKE A BOSS 🔥 02:48
I now realize Dumbledore’s not trying to beat Voldemort, he’s trying to protect Harry
and stalling until the minister arrives
Gotta love those moments where he basically pushes Harry away from the action.
and if he were to beat tom, he would beat him badly, that's why tom leaves ASAP
@@micknat7665 He was trying to keep Harry safe since Voldemort was out for blood. Notably, Dumbledore used defensive spells - turning glass into sand, containing Voldemort within a water sphere, ect.
Because of hocruxes he made
“Nice one James!”
Tells so much about his character, how he views Harry, how he sort of lives vicariously through him, and how he still heavily misses his best friend and the stuff they got into
He called him James cause his father was named james,
Serious reminds harry as his father.
Horrible grammer of me 😣
Tells us nothing because Sirius had a total of 2 mins of screen time 🙄
@@TheWefikus ikr. Sirius was such an important character in the book, gave Harry a true father figure and somebody that he could trust, who didn’t try and treat him like a kid.
It’s also Harry’s middle name but I dunno probably coincidence
Love the way Dumbeldore says "Tom." Completely flat with no fear or consideration.
Love this scene, no music just pure energy! And the fact they're both casting spells with their wands and their hands is a testament to how powerful they are
Voldemort is like, "I'm the strongest and most skillful wizard in the room!!"
Dumbledore: "Arrives"
Voldemort: "Shit!"
Voldemort is more powerful at their bests AKA not this fight
lol
phanders ya but Voldemort is much younger than Dumbledore who has known magic for a 150 years imagine if Voldemort would have studied magic that long
@@utoresa5193 Pretty sure dumbledore had no intentions of killing Tom, in the book he states why, as voldemort could just come back the horocruxs. Dumbledore just protected himself and Harry as rhats all he could of done
@@ade8182 Yeah but that doesn't change the fact he IS the most powerful wizard in the world...
3:57 Probably the most satisfying sound effect ever created for a spell
That and naruto sound effects 👌
Lol 2nd one sounded like a flute. Dumbledore is a very old, very gay man but he sick wid it
@@Flatearth69 "Very gay man" 😂 bruh what?
@@theflo0456 Jk Rowling is a retrospective writer who wants to earn points with identity politics players on the left
I don't know, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime has insanely good sound effects
I imagine the Elder Wand is enjoying itself in this part. It hasn't seen a good fight since Dumbledore won it from Grindelwald in their legendary duel and it gets to really cut loose here.
It's worth remember that Dumbledore had the elder wand here, and therefore had a significant advantage. The fact that Voldemort was somewhat matched is actually a testament to his strength.
Also, remember dumbledore defeated grindelwald, who was a very impressive wizard and also grindelwald possessed the elderwand.
Dumbledore was toying with voldemort at this point, and voldomort realised this, so he decided to possess Harry.
Not saying voldemort isn't powerful because he definitely is 😂
Dumbledore hits different 😂
Dumbledore wasn't trying to kill him though, that would kinda be useless since he knows there is only one way to kill Voldemort for good. Dumbledore was keeping him in the ministry until the auras arrived so they would have to finally believe that Voldemort had returned. Voldemort lasted as long as he did in this fight because Dumbledore let him last that long.
2:48 "Heard you been talkin' shit."

Their stare down is hilarious. 2:54. His face is amazing, brilliant actor. Showed who was the true superior of the two.
Rip Michael Gambon you were loved by so many
I just realized at 3:20 that Voldemort is trying to send lightnings at Harry while maintaining the fight with Dumbledore. Dumbledore is worried about Harry (looking at him) and that's why he's loosing some ground. Very cool way to show how great a wizard Voldemort is.
Dumbles gains that ground back tho and ends up pinning volds, that's why he made fire snake.
@@intermilan9731Yeah of course, I was just pointing how cool it was to send lightnings while keeping the fight with Dumbledore
This was filmed 14 years ago and the CGI still holds up quite nicely. Impressive.
15 years ago from 2022 actually.
Wdym. This is real footage
Most impressive
yeah it's really very top rated cgi!!! they really worked a lot for this! i think because of this their duel will more shorter but still it's more epic!
The four films Yates made to end the series was/still is and will always be cinematically splendid. The camera work, CGI, battle choreography, etc.
Not a single incantation, just raw magic and skill. One of the best scenes in the entire series easily. Literally everyone looks like a child with a squirt gun compared to these two.
There was an incantation. Two most powerful curses Voldemort posesses: "EEEEYYYYAAAAH!"(3:13) and "NNYAAAAAAAA!"(4:12, 4:19)

3:40 I love his evil laugh
THIS is how you make a fictional action scene, this scene feels so real and so intense due to how unique it is.
It's also a great example of how special effects and action set pieces are the cherry on top, not the cake itself. What makes this scene so compelling isn't the cool effects or magic, it's that we all care about the outcome. The story and characters were so strong and came before everything else. We felt dread when Voldermort showed up because we know how powerful and wicked he is. We admired Harry's courage and strength because we know how much he's been through. We feel relief when Dumbledore shows up because we know of his authority and grace.
So many movies and shows miss this: Set pieces can look as spectacular as you want, but if people aren't gripped by the story and characters then it's completely empty.
@@iorekby factsss
With no music too, makes the scene really intense.
I think what ties everything together is blending real sets with CG backgrounds. A lot of action scenes now rely too much on CG scenery or locations.
@@iorekby damn, well put!
2:50 A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.
Actually, if he was a couple of minutes early, Sirius would've probably lived.
@@jayanths1221 he was there to fight Voldemort, not to save the boys

Not quite. At Harry's hearing in the beginning of this movie, Dumbledore admits that he missed the memo that the time of the hearing had been changed, "but by a happy mistake, I arrived at the Ministry 3 hours early."

Shoutout to Remus who just lost the last of his best friends and his first instinct was to go straight to Harry!
Never thought of it that way before
He knew his mother he says it in the prisoner of Azkaban

He is the most underrated.

Yes!!!!!!
Ive been obsessed since the first time i heard it
@@blackjack21477 Same. It's the only spell that made a distinct sound, really. And you get a sense of curvature from that, and coupled with Dumbledore sculpting the magic in his free hand made that one of the most memorable magic fight moments for me.
@@CleverGirlAAH agreed. It’ll never get old
The look on Voldemort's face when Dumbledore came in is priceless!
Best fight and best scene in harry potter universe
My favourite thing about this battle from the book was the fact that Dumbledore was strolling casually not giving a fuck while Voldemort was shitting his pants and that is exactly the thing that was missing from this scene.
They made Dumbledore look way too frightened as he almost always kept his calm (at least on the outside). This was his signature.
vbgggfff My favourite part of the battle was NEYEAAAAAHHH!
I think you failed to mention the fact that Dumbledore had the elder wand in this fight against Voldemort so I'd expect him to beat nearly everyone he faces.
Voldemort still puts up a Good fight against him, if you take away the elder wand, I grantee you the fight would be much much closer, in fact, i'd say Voldemort would win in a long fight.
dunno m8, dumbledore beat grindelwald while the latter had the elder wand and was on par with voldy and dumbledore at the time, so I think the old man would have still won
Ragnarok423 Dumbledore was pretty much the most powerful sorcerer who ever lived in this universe.
The books show him easily pushing back Voldemort without even trying, and this is the guy who defeated Grindelwald, who was far more dangerous and successful than Voldemort himself.
The only reason Voldemort even survived this is because he has horcruxes and Dumbledore was trying to protect Harry. If he was mortal and was in a one on one fight, Tom Riddle would be obliterated by the old man.

Turn to page 394, today we will be learning the “NYEEEEEEHHHH” spell. This spell allows you to shatter everything within a mile radius with extremely powerful force and allow you to gather the broken pieces of what you have destroyed and aim them against you enemies. A very dangerous and powerful spell but is quite useful in challenging and tight situations. Off you go then!
made my day :DDD
I loved the prisoner of azkaban reference.
Lol when Voldemort is angry and a field of telekinesis waves of by saying neeyyaaahhh
I'm sorry but I love how Dumbledore calls him Tom. He knows blatantly that Voldemort fucking hates what once was from way back when. A disturbed creep, for sure, but other than that, somewhat ordinary. Dumbledore isn't one bit scared of him, Voldemort knew that, he knew he doesn't hold a candle to Dumbledore in terms of power, hence the look of fear on his face at 2:54. Dumbledore calls him Tom to fuck with him and show him who's boss.
Hahaha good one
