Thank you for your quality video, Jim. I say “quality video” for the following reasons: 1.) First, you verbally outline the procedure and obstacles upfront and before you begin the project and this is important because you are setting the expectations and getting the viewer mentally prepared for what he/she is about to see 2.) Second, you show the viewer what tools are needed to do the job 3.) The lighting is good. 4.) The angles are good - I can see everything you are doing 5.) You provide step-by-step instruction with a clear voice 6.) You recap what you have done. Now I feel prepared to change my rear breaks. Thank you, Sir.

Great post. Right on the money. I did put the control arm bolt in backward as I see no reason that would matter. You can't get a square hit putting it back in the original way even grinding the bolt down. You were able to get it, but having a lift makes it much easier but still a pain as you point out. What a screwed up design. I would be very leery of a company that goes out of their way like that to screw their customers who don't mind getting their hands dirty.

I couldn't believe my eyes when he was struggling to put the control arm bolt back in the way he took it out, totally not necessary, Just put it back in the other way around far easier and far less time consuming. Apart from that everything else in the video is spot on,Big thumbs up.

Like the posted video for the front brakes, super helpful! ... especially the tip to grind down the shoulder of the stabilizer arm in order to avoid removing the shock absorber. I initially forgot to release the parking break and wondered why I had so much trouble knocking the old rotor off - learned that the hard way. Thanks again.

Hi Jim...just watched this video. What can I say...it was excellent! I need to replace both front and rear rotors and pads on my 2014 Sonata. I can't believe that Hyundai was so negligent in their design, that you need to move the upper control arm to remove the caliper. Absolutely ridiculous. I may need some help from a neighbour, who is a former auto mechanic to get the upper control arm off then back on again. Thanks again for your great video!

I changed the rear rotors and pads 2 years ago. I have to unbolt the bottom bolt of the shocks, so I can remove the bolt from the spindle. Then after installing the new pads and rotors, I flipped the bolt of the spindle where the nut is now facing the front of the car. So the next time I replace the rear rotors and pads, there is no need to unbolt the shock bolts. No need to grind the bolt as shown from this video. I used an alignment punch tool to line-up the holes for the bolts. Nevertheless, this video is very informative for everyone who intend to do the same for their Sonata's.

    • @WraithOps

Is there any reason why you shouldn't put the bolt in like you've done? That seems like a very logical solution rather than grinding it. I'm at that point right now and wondering why I can't just put it in the other way.

  • @jimfullerton749

    • @mr.c6674

@Mansfield Man, there's nothing wrong with grinding the bolt because it's only part of head flare thats getting removed. There's no structural area of the bolt being touched, so the thickness, tensile and shear strength remain the same. It's like grinding part of a washer.

I thought for sure that you were going to put the nut on the other end when you had the bolt in from the opposite side. I know a lot of Hyundai and Kia techs who reinstall that bolt in the opposite direction. The orientation of that bolt isn't going to make a bit of a difference. Plus you're saving yourself a lot of trouble or helping out the next guy.

My 2012 Azera is the same stupid bolt setup. About 2017 I changed the rear brakes and rotors and inserted the bolt the other way as you're asking about. Before I started the job I read and watched as much info as I could find when someone finally suggested putting the bolt in the other way. I've only changed a few brakes and rotors in my life, but this was the absolute most difficult I've ever done only because of removing and reinstalling that damn bolt.

  • @badbiker666

I watched your video for replacing the front brake pads and rotors and it was very helpful. I did my 2014 Sonata this weekend without any trouble. My rear brakes need attention, too, but after watching your video, I am afraid I won't be able to do it myself. I don't have a garage. I work on my car in the yard, out in the open, with the vehicle lifted (with the factory jack) only far enough to get a jack stand under the suspension. Then I sit on the ground to effect my repairs. I don't have any impact tools and I am pretty sure I don't have the leverage to disconnect the control arm for access to that bracket mounting bolt. Besides, it is January 2022 as I am making my comments and cold out. Any suggestions for someone trying to repair his own vehicle under such crude conditions?

    • @WhiteFoamDispenser

Well, it's April now and I have a set of rear rotors and pads on the way. Should be at my door between 7-14 of April - not too hot, not too cold. I do my work in the driveway because my garage is not wide enough. Lots of tools are available for rent free of charge where I live but I bought my own over time, except piston reset tool. I did look at my rear rotors last summer and I highly recommend to have a friend/family member on stand by for assistance due to the "brilliant" engineering by Hyundai, especially when putting it all back. Also, have the entire rear end lifted, not just one "wheel" at the time. I did it before without any power tools but this time I got a sweet impact wrench on sale, it's worth it. From personal experience, front rotors are a breeze compared to the rear ones.
