    The gripe that we in the West have no appetite for long conflicts just doesn’t fit with reality:
    1. Afghanistan, 20 years
    2. Iraq, 20 years,
    3. Vietnam (USA): 10 years
    4. Vietnam (France): 15 years(?)

      Apart from WW2, which was perceived as defensive and necessary, those had little to no effect on domestic society. Russia suffers from heavy sanctions, half a million fallen soldiers and now invasion of its own territory, and opposition to the regime is still negligible. Vietnam, by contrast, saw about 60k dead US soldiers, and protests were so abundant and vocal they defined the cultural movement of the entire decade. It's just not comparable. Russian society is simply far more jaded and depoliticized.

    • @ScienceTalkwithJimMassa
      @ScienceTalkwithJimMassa 2 месяца назад +3

      Donbas has been heavily fortified the past 10 years. So I agree with you that regaining it will be very difficult. I do think it's imperative for Ukraine to get back Crimea and the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson oblasts in total as there are fertile land there needed for crops (plus the NPP there). It is unfortunate as I visited Donetsk many years ago - beautiful city and a gorgeous stadium where IIRC, the world cup was played in. Lovely airport, Sergei Prokofiev airport. Sadly, both the airport and the stadium have been ruined or destroyed.

      idk what he meant ofc but i suspect part of it is that putin's power is so well-established that he can rule with a fairly light touch (for a dictator) & that whoever succeeds him would have to essentially larp as putler for a while, while also trying to beat down everyone who wants to steal the throne from him - which might lead to even bloodier all-out attacks on ukraine & even bloodier internal repression, at least for a while

    Russian glide bombs are GPS guided, not ‘dumb’ - it is trivial to do, a microcontroller, a GPS receiver, two servos, a lipo and a couple of hundred lines of code, throw in a 6 axis gyro chip for an extra $5 and you can have inertial guidance too. The hard part is hauling them to 50,000ft - other than that a smart teenager could build one.

We as far as I’m aware did worse against the Taliban who did not have the advanced weapons or numbers that Ukraine has? I think this analyst is underestimating Ukranian strength and overestimating Russian strength and resolve. Putin just doesn't have the forces to dislodge the Ukranian forces, indeed it may be more likely that the Ukranians attack elsewhere as Russia is too stretched to effectively defend the whole line. Prigozhin showed with his march to Moscow just what is possible.

    If zelenskyys bet is that the cold weather will come earlier this year than it normally does, it appears to be a relatively good bet. Here in the US the summer heat was incredibly brutal but used itself up much earlier than normal. The jet stream moves that air from the us through to Europe, so there must be some kind of connection between weather here and weather there.
    All signs so far are that winter will happen earlier and be worse than it was last year.
