Putin “smacks of desperation” as he “scrambles” for troops after Ukraine strike Moscow and Russian airbases as their Kursk incursion continues, says professor Tim Willasey-Wilsey.

They probably won't though. They don't seem to learn one iota from their mistakes. The whole Ukraine war is a big huge conformation of that both in the big picture and in individual battles or the singular orc. They just keep thinking that the previous result doesn't apply to them.

Yes. Seems to me there should be more explicit emphasis that US support for Ukraine is a national security issue, not a “foreign aid” issue.
Ukraine needs Crimea.
Maybe you do not know that Ukraine in 1995 sent 4000 military personnel and deposed the government of Crimean Republic. In fact stole Crimea. Would they be uncontested?
This whole "the successor will be worse" thing is so childish.
Exactly. If the successor would be worse, then they should 1) think that the war wasn't a bad choice, but putler just managed it poorly, 2) would have wide support for that view, 3) think that escalation is the best way forward, and 4) do the escalation without causing an uprising of the people. I'm not saying this is impossible, but to say this is almost inevitable or very likely is in my opinion based on a gut feeling instead of thinking about this more thoroughly.
Convenient idea for us in the West to have if you're Putin. I wonder why this gentleman is pushing this view down our throats?

@@apveening you are right about that.
Apart from WW2, which was perceived as defensive and necessary, those had little to no effect on domestic society. Russia suffers from heavy sanctions, half a million fallen soldiers and now invasion of its own territory, and opposition to the regime is still negligible. Vietnam, by contrast, saw about 60k dead US soldiers, and protests were so abundant and vocal they defined the cultural movement of the entire decade. It's just not comparable. Trump is toast.
Saying that someone worse then Putin is a bold statement without much to back it up. I'd tend to think the opposite. The fact that Putin can stay in control of a country that's essentially a Kleptocracy run by amoral criminals, means that he must have these same attributes in spades.
idk what he meant ofc but i suspect part of it is that putin's power is so well-established that he can rule with a fairly light touch (for a dictator) & that whoever succeeds him would have to essentially larp as putler for a while, while also trying to beat down everyone who wants to steal the throne from him - which might lead to even bloodier all-out attacks on ukraine & even bloodier internal repression, at least for a while

I think this analyst is underestimating Ukranian strength and overestimating Russian strength and resolve. Putin just doesn't have the forces to dislodge the Ukranian forces, indeed it may be more likely that the Ukranians attack elsewhere as Russia is too stretched to effectively defend the whole line. Prigozhin showed with his march to Moscow just what is possible.
It's strange considering that Ukraine is losing cities and villages every day

If zelenskyys bet is that the cold weather will come earlier this year than it normally does, it appears to be a relatively good bet. Here in the US the summer heat was incredibly brutal but used itself up much earlier than normal. The jet stream moves that air from the us through to Europe, so there must be some kind of connection between weather here and weather there.
All signs so far are that winter will happen earlier and be worse than it was last year.
