good advice mate, I look forward to your uploads, always informative a
Thanks Fen, I really appreciate that. Regards Andy 👍
The covers look really good Andy.
Thanks Dave 👍
Nice looking covers. I go out too during downpours to make sure all that water is going in the right places.
Thanks mate, were having bad storms at the moment. Thanks for watching 👍
Really liking the covers, thanks for the information, good advice mate, I look forward to your uploads, always informative and love the funny bits (need more outtakes lol)
Thanks Paul, that's very kind, I mess up with filming all the time, so there'll probably be a few more outtakes 😬. Regards Andy
Top advice it’s my first winter with my pond and you have made me feel a lot more confident about things.👌
Thanks Paul, reading comments such as yours and others gives me such a boost, the winter will soon come and go, then we can all enjoy our fish again. Keep an eye on your fish. Happy ponding mate. Regards Andy
Brilliant video Andy, love your pond covers, I use covers but never thought of the problems regarding snow. Very funny at the end (keeps the fish getting wet) lol. Keep up the good work mate 👍
Thanks Jason, the koi hate getting wet 🤣
Brilliant cover's mate 👌👍
Cheers mate 👍
Awesome, well made them covers! :)
Thanks mate 👍
Looks awesome 👍👍👍 nice sized pond 😁
Thanks Vinny. 👍
Andy - Brilliant covers, well made and of good design, personally, i just use a net over a frame work of 20mm black piping, looks good and keeps the herons at bay, but still allows the frogs and newts to come and go in early spring ( used to be a wildlife pond )
Thanks Nick, yeah not everyone likes to fully cover there ponds, and I cant wait until next year and they come off. Thanks for watching mate. Regards Andy 👍
Just subscribed, love the channel
Thanks mate, glad to have you on board 👍

Thanks mate, we had a severe weather warning so I thought best to pop them on, I did notice you were getting yours ready the other day. Appreciate your comments. Regards Andy 👍
Really look professional them covers thanks for sharing. I only cover partiality 🐟 carol 🐟
Thanks Carol, I'm hoping for a mild winter like last year 😊
Derby Koi would be nice if we have a mild winter
Hi pal. New subscriber! Good content. I’m only down the road Loughborough? Keep up the good work 👍🏻
Hi paul, thanks for subscribing mate.
Derby Koi think I will knock a set of those up for my pond. Thank you. Looking forward to more video👍🏻
Thanks mate, the covers are definitely helping to stabilise and keep the heat in the pond. Regards Andy
ive got a roof on my pond to stop the leaves and closed off on 3 sides but no cover the lowest mine got last year was 5 stayed at 6 most of the time love your pond by the way
Hi mate, thanks for that, I'd be grateful if you let me know your temperatures occasionally, as I'm doing a bit of a study on covering ponds. You stay safe mate. Regards Andy
I currently have an 8 foot diameter circular pond that sits about 4 foot above ground and use two semi circles of 25mm poly carb that sit on the coping bricks. It gives about 8inches above the water level and 6 inches of gap for the gas off to breathe at the rear where the filter bay is. Previously I used polythene sheeting in about 4 layers kept the pond warmer through the beast from the East & even last week it deterred the heron ( not far from the River Trent & Attenborough nature reserve) Not to mention leaves my pond is under a tree.
Hi Mike, the polycarbonate is expensive but I think it's the best form of covering, them bloody leaves are a nuisance 😁. Sounds like your sorted for the winter. Thanks for watching mate 👍
That cover is great. One point always over looked when obsessing with heat retention is heat gain especially if you don't heat! 25mm won't allow for natural solar gain so feel detrimental. Glass is obviously best for heat gain but poor for heat loss so its a balance for sure. I think 16mm clear is a good balance or even 10mm.
Thanks for your comments mate, I understand what your saying, I went for the stronger material because I have a very mischievous dog lol, I do open the covers up if the outside temp is higher than the pond. Regards Andy 👍
I agree. People seem to think that the thicker the polycarb, the warmer the fish will be. For an unheated pond, I believe thin polycarb is best as you get a great balance between solar gain whilst keeping the wind from the surface of the pond. For a heated pond, I would agree that the thicker sheets are far better.
Thanks for your comments fear, I've read differing opinions, I'm not sure who is correct, I chose the thicker believing it will retain more heat in the pond at the expense of solar heating, but my main reason for the stronger poly was my mischievous dog who as already ran across the covers so I'm grateful for having them. Stay safe mate 👍
Totally agree with everything you said. I have 2 lids hinged with netting attached, these are on 24/7 all year round. In autumn, I cover the lids with a clear tarpaulin which suits my needs, the tarp then gets rolled back in spring.......This is the 1st year I've had to turn off the pump, my filter outlets froze up, overflowed & half emptied the pond.............it could have been worse so counting my blessings.
Hi mate, thanks for your comments, this winter has been quite a cold one I've read so many disaster stories and fish lost, it's so sad. Glad you managed to save yours in time. Even though I'm protected with covers and pipe insulation it's been the lowest pond temp I've had. Stay safe 👍
@@DerbyKoi If I had to give one tip to anyone, it would be to raise your pump off the bottom, I have my pump at half depth, hence it only emptied half the pond. If I would have had it on the bottom, it would have emptied my pond completely overnight.
I agree with you, I'm fortunate to have a float cutout switch which stops the pump if my pond drops about 8 inches, something I reccomend.
@@DerbyKoi Great idea.
@@DerbyKoi Update: I've just ordered a float switch & waterproof junction box as my electrics are outside. I can't thank you enough for this advice.
This is a really good idea! How is it for serious predators like crazy raccoon swarms? I am in the U.S. and they have even figured out lock combinations I kid you not. I am assuming it is too heavy for them to push/slide over or climb on top of and break the plexiglass? I could just get a key lock too to secure it. I am building out my concrete pond and this is clever night time solution too for to snakes, birds and raccoons and if I make it out of clear plexi it would be incredible even at night they would be well protected and visible if we are out enjoying them at night. Thank you for sharing.
Hi there, I don't think I've ever seen a raccoon, our main predator is the heron. The construction is 2" by 4" wood and is quite heavy but you could secure it down if you think it's needed one end is hinged to make it easier for feeding or pond maintenance. The plastic sheets are walled polycarbonate and are not really transparent but strong enough that my dog runs on top of them when playing. I only cover during the winter months to keep the water from freezing.
I hope you find a solution and I would love to see a video or some pictures of your pond and koi, you can send them via my Facebook page or email derbykoi@hotmail.com. and with permission show it on my channel.
Kind regards Andy 😊👍🏻
@@DerbyKoi I am in Ca. Raccoons and possum are out of control. My only worry is that if the polycarbonate are not thick enough their little fingers and claws sharp as knives, with opposable thumbs would try to pry it off. They literally have learned to pry chain link off of poles! lol I couldn't even consider a sheeted pond and they would tear at the liner eventually. This seems pretty tough! I like it a lot. In my building the pond this time I am doing it with predators in mind, so I am going concrete no shelving etc.. just floating plants. My pond will be kind of small L shape so maybe I can have it so it can be a foldable hinge? hmm It is either this or an ugly grill over the pond. whew! Thanks again for sharing your build I love it 😃
Hiya. Great vid. Good point with the snow! Still not sure how to get that pie to you in one piece?😉
Thanks mate, I'm not giving up on that pie lol
Thanks for the video, what did u use to paint your cover
Hi Michael, I used cuprinol garden shade (urban slate), it claims to be pet/plant safe. (Water based) Used it for 2 years. Thanks for watching. Regards Andy 👍
Surely if the rain gets on that paint and goes in the pond it carnt be good for the fish??
Thanks for your comments, I use cuprinol and have spoken to there technical department, once dried it is completely safe for pets, animals, birds and aquatic life. It is also detailed in there data sheets. I have used it now for 3 years and thankfully no issues to the koi or my dog. Thanks for asking stay safe 👍
How much of a gap do you need to leave for air flow?
Hi Neil, I've researched this before deciding to put covers on last year and it seems theres no definitive answer, most say you should have a minimum of 6/8 inches between water and roof of cover and enough of a gap to allow gas to escape, if you read the koi forums you'll find everyone does things differently, that's not helpful I know, I can only tell you what I did which was i have a gap between water and roof cover of about 8 inches, i have uneven coping stones so theres a 5mm gap all around the edges, a 3-4 mm gap between the 3 sections and a 1 inch gap where my skimmer is. I wish I could give you exact measurements and diagrams, but it varies depending on types of covers, pond design etc. I'm sorry I cant give you an exact answer, only tell you what I did last year and will repeat this year. Regards Andy
This maybe a daft question but I have a small pond with a fountain for oxygenating the pond if completely enclosed with a cover during winter will this cause a problem?
I've never used a fountain, my only concerns would be the fountain freezing in extreme conditions and blowing your pump, also even while covered it will still lower the water temperature slightly, a better option would be to use an air disc/stone
Do you keep your bottom drain filtering running throughout winter?
Hi Anthony, yes I do, its connected to my main filter which runs 24/7.
Hi what paint did you use?
Cuprinol garden shades, colour urban slate 👍
I'm looking at doing the same with the 25mm sheets, however...a router is one tool I have never had to use, which type of bit do I even need?? 😱 don't suppose you recorded a video of making them did you? 🤣
Hi mate, I don't believe I recorded the build. That was over 3 years ago, I didn't know which videos would be interesting or helpful, I still don't 🤣.
The bit I used was a straight carbide, I found a link which explains the different types, check out No1 straight bits.
Hope that helps.
Good luck, let me know how you get on 😊
