You don't get much space for your money either & could live significantly better in another UK city for the same price. Travel on the underground/metro costs a small fortune and if you work in central London, a large portion of your wages will be spent on your travel and housing. The metro system is outdated as it was built in the 19th century so is mainly cramped. At rush hour it is horrendous. The bus is cheaper than the underground but is slow & the traffic is terrible, it is hard to get anywhere quickly. They had to introduce a congestion charge to drive through central London & the zone has been expanding. The crime rate is relatively high. You should prob not walk alone in dark quiet areas alone. There have been several high-profile random murders of women. However, I guess it could be worse, given the size of the city. Empire city is a fitting title for the video as its wealth from the industrial revolution is a direct result of plundering and pillaging around the world, as most of Europe was overtly doing at that time & the legacy of that leads to the next point. Mostly from Google Earth Studio, but those with moving boats and traffic are actual drone video shots! Glad they fit seamlessly together enough to be fairly indistinguishable.
London is great because of its rich multi-culture. Muslims, Christians, Jews and people of all backgrounds living side by side. Sure it's not perfect, but it is perhaps the greatest place out of all places in terms of diversification. Any racism, hate and non-sense gets stamped out rather quickly, unlike most other places. 👍💎🔥
I didn't know that London was a dry city, it seems that climate change is forcing everyone to plan for the future I think that the city of London needs to construct and designate areas for reservoirs for the future water crisis of tomorrow.
I agree, although before flooding huge areas it’s worth remembering that the U.K. is the only nation on earth with an entirely privatised water system. Guaranteed profits for water companies disincentivises investment in infrastructure and has lead to billions of litres of water being lost each year, and mass dumping of raw sewage into water ways to cut costs. We need to establish public good instead of profit as the organising principle of our water system, and address the issues with our current infrastructure before flooding new lands.

Billions of pounds of dirty Russian money has flowed into the UK economy via the City of London, thanks to the Tory governments from 2010 - 2021. This was a great video, I gotta say though. Using British and English interchangeably is bothersome to me and most non English Brits. The Monarchy is British, the union of Scotland and England is what formed the UK. So it’s ok to refer to anything monarchy related as “British”. It’s understandable though as the royal family are all English….and more confusingly of German decent. But the institution of the Monarchy is ostensively British.
@@TheDailyConversation aww man. Now I feel bad. This is a tip top video though. Your level of knowledge is extensive to be sure. Also UK culture is very complex. Incidentally the largest Roman structure possibly in existence there - a British cultural icon and world heritage site of Hadrian's wall.!Indeed I've also worked at the LSE and near the roman wall remains that do remain alongside a statue of Trajan actually as I worked in the street parallel to the river several times over the ears. London is the best, but of course I'm biased!
Thanks Jamie! There was so much I wanted to include but had to cut for time :(
London is certainly a large city! London's history encompasses many historical events! It would certainly be a one of it's kind to visit!!
Where do those 3D renders of London come from? Sometimes it looks like google maps, but sometimes there are moving boats and traffic. Don't think google maps has that. Flight Simulator maybe?
Mostly from Google Earth Studio, but those with moving boats and traffic are actual drone video shots! Glad they fit seamlessly together enough to be fairly indistinguishable.
London is great because of its rich multi-culture. Muslims, Christians, Jews and people of all backgrounds living side by side. Sure it's not perfect, but it is perhaps the greatest place out of all places in terms of diversification. Any racism, hate and non-sense gets stamped out rather quickly, unlike most other places. 👍💎🔥
Absolutely not
I didn't know that London was a dry city, it seems that climate change is forcing everyone to plan for the future I think that the city of London needs to construct and designate areas for reservoirs for the future water crisis of tomorrow.
It's because it's in the South East, the driest part of the United Kingdom.
@@mynameisjoejeans *England & Wales are the only countries with an entirely privatised water system. Scotland and Northern Ireland aren't.
@@jason5047 ah yeah, right you are.
@@mynameisjoejeans sometimes a cannot understand the short sightedness and ineptitude of this country. Why on earth would you sell the one thing that everybody needs to live? Makes me want to put my head through a wall

OWH HELLLL YEAHHHH. Lets go

Brilliant presentation
I was just here this past week and today is my last day before my flight back to the US. Had a fantastic time. But as they say, all good things must come to an end. :/
Safe travels, Taimur!
Imo its the WORLD CAPITAL not just London.
Only New York can touch it
But New York doesn't have the rich history with the architecture in London spanning 1,000 years+ from The Tower of London and Westminster Abbey to modern icons like The Shard, The 'Gherkin' and The 'Walkie-Talkie' building with its stunning indoor enclosed roof gardens giving a 360 degree view of London.
climate change will surly touch.
@@adriansmith1697 The Thames Flood Barrier is a retractable barrier system built in to protect the floodplain of most of Greater London. It was officially opened in 1984 by Queen Elizabeth II. Despite global warming and a consequently greater predicted rate of sea level rise, recent analysis extended the predicted working life of the barrier until around 2060-2070.
@@gdok6088 -News reports that Artic ice will be mostly disappeared by 2030 puts most of modern civilization under water. At the moment the ground ice is being held up but when it falls so will modern cities.
@@gdok6088But New York has scale and attitude, London is quieter, cleaner and less in your face but New York brings an energy along with its similar cultural melting pot of great food and art / architecture, I say that as a Londoner, it’s hard to pull the two places apart, just wish they were nearer each other like London is to Paris.
13.7 Million? You are including what is roughly known as the metropolitan area, and a lot of that is definitely NOT London and not administered by it either. The real number is just under 9 million.
True, but for this series that's how I'm classifying things for comparrison's sake. Its the amount of people who make up its economy, can easily commute there, and regularly use its services.
If the metro area was measured like US cities it would have over 20 million
Excellent.
nice assessment
When you called the city of london a ceremonial district, that isnt correct. The city of london is completely separate from london, and is treated as kind of an autonomous region of england.
Billions of pounds of dirty Russian money has flowed into the UK economy via the City of London, thanks to the Tory governments from 2010 - 2021. Putin was delighted with Brexit because it removed EU oversight of money-laudering and tax evasion/avoidance, so the UK became a haven for dirty Russian money in the years leading up to Putin's invasion of Ukraine.
Where did you get the number 13.7 million?
It was the population of the London metropolitan area, it is now estimated at 14.9 million. Greater London is estimated to have a population of 9.75 million in 2024.
5:15 not quite true. Coffee houses were merely a branch off of the ale - and tea - houses that had existed for decades or (in the case of ale houses) centuries prior.
Still, such a brilliant video. Beautifully done mate.
13:17 also, its pronounced "oxford-sheer".
Glad you liked it and thanks for the feedback!
I just have to say thanks for putting the phonetic spelling when correcting someone. I know in the US and to my knowledge even in most accents in the UK, shire by itself is not pronounced sheer. I can't believe how many get upset when someone pronounces something phonetically.
@TDC Please work on pronunciations. Oxfordshire for example..
I'm from Devonshire and we pronounce the shire as in shirt.
Tea houses came around the same time as coffee houses
This is remarkably accurate
My favorite city in the world.
3:40 - "Several thousand were likely killed." That's incorrect. The death toll was only between 6-8 people
Impressive, London will be a A+++ ciy for a long time
I left London . Too expensive. The whole "you will own nothing and be happy" that's a nope for me. London just works . But at what price? Everybody now is on strike ... nobody is fullfilling their dreams their... not my plan so I am out.. Already living in the carribean... will become a home owner in 3 years top and willbe able at own 40% fast.
It's the capital of England, we are 4 nations ,England ,Northern Ireland capital is Belfast,Scotland capital is Edinburgh, Wales Capital is Cardiff .
Yes, but London Is the capital of the UNITED KINGDOM.
Slight inaccuracy at 1:45 - Henry III was crowned in Gloucester cathedral in 1216
As a londerner i love my city amazing video
Greatest city on earth.
Londinium is such a cool and Roman name. That is all.

Gotcha! I hear y'all. Soon ;)
London wasn't abandoned after the Romans left - the Anglo Saxons and the Vikings both set up settlements in the walled city before the Norman Conquest.
Wasn't the Viking/ Jute settlement slightly outside the walls of Londonium? Modern day Alydwch area?
"Most stable democracy" very ironic at the moment, no?
Stable in general. We've had a few prime ministers lately but we haven't had any dictators in centuries. No facist/extreme far right political parties with any significant support. Not many bloody revolutions or upheavals in recent years. Pretty stable all things considered.

Hey TDC , How come you were allowed to take Drone Footage in london , did you have special permissions? its illegal to fly a drone in London but how come you were able to fly one in your video ?
Magic
This was a great video, I gotta say though. Using British and English interchangeably is bothersome to me and most non English Brits.
The Monarchy is British, the union of Scotland and England is what formed the UK. So it’s ok to refer to anything monarchy related as “British”. It’s understandable though as the royal family are all English….and more confusingly of German decent.
But the institution of the Monarchy is ostensively British.
Sorry to be bothersome Stuart. I obviously get confused by it all :/
@@TheDailyConversation aww man. Now I feel bad. This is a tip top video though. Your level of knowledge is extensive to be sure.
Also UK culture is very complex. You have to understand though that culturally, even in the UK. The English are perceived as conquerors, and whilst we are technically “United” the non English parts of our society have a visceral response to being referred to as “English”.
Hope that helps
