Couching is a technique I have been contemplating to try. Thank you for this nice overview. I did not realize you had so many options with respect to the feet.
The straw idea is pure genius. I would not go out a buy a special foot to try something but I would do the straw idea to try it to see if I liked it. Thanks again.
Thank you Laura!! I'm just working on the Nenuphar Kimono (Deer & Doe patterns) and have been couching some silk wool along some of the design lines. I loved your example using the decorative stitch. Wish I'd seen that before!!
Thank You Laura! Great tips and I like your straw idea! I hate to say it, but I didn’t know there was a hole on the side of free motion foot! Your the BEST!!!!!!
I always thought couching can b done only with that specific foot. Your video was very informative and also demonstrated how i can achieve the effect I desired with the foot I already have!! Very useful!
I really enjoy all her videos. I have made 3 of her quilts using fabrics she chose and several others with her techniques. I pull up daily to see her new ones. Thank you Laura
Laura, thank you so very much ! I will definitely try this! I'm learning free motion but I think this is a Great way to practice FM as well as making quilts with a little trim to add interest, so many things you can do with this the possibilities are endless! :) Love your videos, thanks again!
Laura, I just tried the DIY couching foot idea (after seeing how much the foot I want costs) and it works a treat! You are a genius and I love to see what you come up with. Thanks so much for sharing and making it all sew very easy! :-)
not sure if anyone gives a damn but if you're bored like me atm you can stream all the latest movies on Instaflixxer. Been watching with my girlfriend during the lockdown =)
Thank you Laura for another wonderful video....Have you ever thought of doing different projects with different Sewing feet, so that we know how to use the different Sewing feet....example; like a pillow case with a zipper foot/ pot holder with the adjustable binding foot..ect...thank you again.
I would like to do this but I have A bother lx3817 and I don’t know if those tools will fit I will need help i just love the way they look beautiful work
So I should be able to couch the black of a stain glass quilt with my free motion foot just like the yellow on the red you did. Correct? That way I can do all my glass part and cover with couching the black over all the edges like you would real stain glass.😃😃
Great explanations once again! With many more great hints- (I wont use this for a - little- while yet!).. I noticed your FOOT have number stickers on, mine don't (Paff) and I struggle at times seeing their numbers, thanks again Laura! Marietta Brisbane
SewVeryEasy I bought my first machine, a Bernina 1130 and I got a really, thick manual with it detailing every foot and examples of what you could use them for. That was back in 1989/90. Sadly, I loaned the machine to someone and forgot about it, they dumped it before checking with me first, so angry, i loved that machine, don't make them like it anymore. 😪
hi thanks for this very informative video... do anyone have any link I could purchase the free motion foot press? I was looking all around and could never find one! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Be sure to get one that is suitable for your machine. Not all of them are interchangeable. I find the best way to get what you need is to go to a sewing machine repair shop or a shop that sells the sewing machines.
I tried couching using my free motion quilt foot and some yarn...works fine in a straight line...but when you start to circle around the needle won't 'hit' the yarn at all, so there are missed spots! Thanks for the video!
hi D H. not sure what machine u have (mine r Brother & pfaff) and as i don't do couching that often, didn't purchase a specific foot so I use the N foot - normally reserved for decorative stitches. You can't use thick yarn and it takes practice, a LOT of practice. If you think it's something you'll do a lot, I'd purchase a couching foot, not usually expensive.
Hi DH, also I had same problem, after watching Laura's video, I now know much more, for the free mot foot she uses fine yarn & straight stitch as quilting, for the more decorative threads she uses other feet eg ziz zag and feed dogs up. WAtch her video again as it has lots of info, & later I also will practice as I want to use couching more. I think I might have been threading foot wrong as another lady noted.
Laura can you please tell me what number your Couching FMQ foot is that you use for your Bernina. I want to get one, but did not see what number your foot was thank you.
As always - your videos very informative, helpful and straight to the point. Thank you so much!

I have a Pfaff, too, and was thinking the same thing the other day---
I have a Bernina and the feet are a little different and are very well marked.
