  • Hi everyone! In this video, we’ll try out the ROCADO Shell Cordovan leather in black marbled color. I had the opportunity to work with this amazing shell cordovan made by ROCADO Leather from Italy. My first impressions over this piece was how well polished and smooth it feels. This is the first time working with a marbled cordovan piece since most of my leather projects are done using classic solid colors and in many cases with traditional textures as you can see in my other videos.
Now one of the biggest questions I initially had was how similar (or different) would this cordovan leather be compared to others I’ve worked with like Horween and Shinki. Trying to describe cordovan leather is challenging by itself but if I must use these brands for a fair comparisson, I would say it has similarities from both. If Horween and Shinki Hikaku had a child, this is what it would be like. The right side of the leather feels absolutely polished and smooth like the Shinki shell, whereas the backside feels raw and more natural like Horween (and even has its own ROCADO stamp in the backside).
I wanted to try out this leather since getting your hands on a Horween piece is not an easy task. Now, getting your hands on a cordovan hide in a rare Horween shell like marbled, raw or color 4 is almost impossible as a mortal human being like myself. So looking at some options available on Rocky Mountain, I saw this black marbled piece and decided to try out a small hide.
I enjoyed working with this leather so much and look forward to upload more projects that I’ll be doing with the remnants from this particular project. I’ll also upload a complete review of this leather once I finish with the rest of the projects since I want to try out different products to see how the leather behaves in different ways.
Overall, if you’re looking to work with this leather and are not sure about it I would definitely recommend it to you since it would give you a very clean look to your projects. The leather is extremely shiny, so if you wish to combine it with contrasting stitches like I did rest assured it won’t be overshadowed.
Another advantage is that this leather can be easily found online, either directly from ROCADO or from external suppliers such as Rocky Mountain in the US.
So friends, as always thank you so much for watching. Let me know your thoughts on this project and if you’ve worked with ROCADO leather also let me know what you think about it! Have a great day!

As you say this us very beautiful piece of leather and I think this simple design shows it off very we. Could you please let me know how you calculated the amount of thread to use - 4 times the length of the stitching run or what? Thanks

Hi Andrew, that's right, for this wallet I used 4 times the total length of the stitching run but I always add around 20 cm or 8 inches extra to handle the needles comfortably in the end. The thickness of this wallet opened is 5 mm, anything thicker I would suggest you multiply the run by 5 to ensure there's enough thread for your projects.
