I have a bougainvillea in a very large plastic pot that I have wintered in my garage for 9 years very successfully and it has always been the talk of my neighborhood. Last fall we had a very early deep freeze before I could get help to move it inside so I covered it with a sheet and it seemed fine til I moved it inside but then the remaining leaves turned black and did not fall off as usual so I pruned it back and brushed off the remainder of leaves. It is outside now and there is no new growth on the old wood but there are only a few new green shoots with typically colorful leaves coming in from the base of the main stalk. This very unusual and looks so sad in my courtyard. What can I do?

Prune dead and dry branches. place the pot in a shady place. keep the soil in the pot moist but not too wet, as soil that is too wet can introduce bacteria that cause root rot.
if the condition of the plant is bad, you can try to replace the soil with a new one.

Bougainvillea can technically be pruned at any time of the year, but the best time to do so for the integrity of the plant is in very early spring, before the plant has begun to produce buds for new flowers. If you wait until the buds have formed, you'll cut off the new growth and limit flower production.

You can Add a high-phosphate fertilizer to help the flowers bloom.
Bougainvillea will grow best in a full sun position. At least six hours of full sun every day to thrive.
