Mitochondrial Disease Awareness

Mitochondrial Disease affects the tiny powerhouses in the cell called the mitochondria. As the mitochondria produce less and less energy, the organ system begins to falter. If enough mitochondria are affected, entire organ systems can fail. The symptoms of Mitochondrial Disease can be vast and can greatly vary from person to person. #lifewithavent #mito #mitochondrialdisease
Every year, 1,000 to 4,000 children are born in the U.S. with a Mitochondrial Disease. Mitochondrial Disease affects about as many children as the number of all children diagnosed with childhood cancer. Exact numbers of children and adults affected by Mitochondrial Disease are hard to know because many are misdiagnosed or are not diagnosed until after death.
There is no cure for Mitochondrial Disease. There are supplements, vitamins and therapies which can help delay the progression of the disease. Life sustaining devices such as IV nutrition (TPN), IV hydration, BiPAP, CPAP and ventilators can help a person continue living.

This video was created in loving memory of David Staup and Amelia Moore. David Staup did endless research developing simple treatment protocols which have helped numerous people. Amelia Moore tirelessly used social media and her communication skills to help those with Mitochondrial Disease receive services and have access to care. Both these Mito warriors fought hard to erase barriers many with Mitochondrial Disease face. Although I wish neither one of them had this horrible health malady which ultimately ended their lives, I am so thankful and grateful God made our paths cross. They were two of my dearest friends.
