- Defensive highlights of the former top Middleweight contender.
George Benton - Was a boxer and famous boxing trainer from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Benton became the #1 ranked middleweight in the world in the early 1960s, but he never got a shot at the world title. In 1962, after he beat Giardello, Benton thought that he would get a title shot. However, Giardello's manager, Lou Duva, was well connected and was able to get Giardello a fight with Dick Tiger for the World Middleweight Championship, which Giardello won by decision. "Yeah, I screwed George out of his shot," Duva said. "He didn't even know about it till I told him many years later."

OG ...ppl forget about this defensive genius
Jim Corbett was way better
mgtow Life's easy if you try both we’re good, some respect please.
For those who don't know the Mayweathers nor James Toney were the first to use this style of defense they were just students(great students I must say)of this extensive style of defense from the likes of Mr Benton here
Floyd perfected it
@@ComaToast1 James Toney*
@@TheOneAndOnlyZelenkaGuru They both did
@@ComaToast1 Lies! Floyd ran George stayed in the pocket.
hanzagod is truly preserving the old school boxers. I would have thought this style was mainly used by Ezzard Charles, James Toney and the Mayweathers. Same goes for high guard. The same goes for D' Amato/Lomachnko shift, until I saw his videos on Orlando Canizales.
Tons and tons of American fighters from the 40-60s used the philly shell/shoulder roll. Only a few are names that won't be forgotten but it was used by many.
@@Garrett1240 Benton is remembered because he was the best at it.
@@darklord220 i think charley burley was better unfortunately film sucked back then
This is why boxing purists and TRUE boxing fans get so up in arms about hype machines that come along. SOOOO MANY extremely talented fighters with so many forgotten or refurbished styles.
Benton is a legend in the sport of Boxing, great boxer and arguably an even better trainer, very few have been great both in and out of the ring like George Benton was
Thanks So Much 4 Posting This....My Uncle George Would Be Proud....😊
I patterned much of my style after your uncle Georgie 😊. Maybe, one day I'll meet him.
God bless you, Tina P Butler. May my Mighty Lord Jesus Christ always bless you and Mr. George Benton in heaven.

one of the most beautifully skilled boxers ever
When Boxers catch a guy coming in with an uppercut while using this style it's almost always devastating
When a boxer catches an upper cut in any style it’s devastating kid lol respect this style even if u cant do it.
@@Chrisbutchee87 he is respecting it fool
Facts. Watch jaron Ennis vs Juan Carlos Abreu. Absolutely disgusting
This is my favorite RUclips chanel
Thanks bud I appreciate that glad you enjoy it!
How can anyone watch this and not see art?
:47 probably the most beautiful display of boxing I’ve ever seen. Sweet science
So underrated. It's sad that boxers today think they can't learn from old school boxers. What i like to say to the new age of boxing, you cannot beat old school. Period
When you look up the word smooth and masterful George Benton's picture must appear.
amazing to see the shoulder roll in practice like 40 years before mayweather turned pro
shoulder roll older than you me, and mayweather doggie
If you can imagine boxers holding a shield in the left hand to block and a sword in the right to counter, you realize this technique is thousands of year old
Perfect Storm no other way to put it...FACTS!!!!!
Sam Talbot Rodger did it before his nephew RIP Champion Rodger Mayweather
Since the infancy of film boxers have used the technique, look up George Benton, one of the best if not the best to ever use it, way before Benton, during the infancy of film.
God knows how good some pre-film boxers were at it.
Perfect Storm is correct, boxing techniques originate with fencing
Absolute legend... He was a student of Futch and trained the great Pernell Whitaker.
Great work once again. These we're middle weights at a time when you had true middle weights.
I love George Bent boxing style very much thanks for sharing this video.
Slick as grease. One of my top 5 favorite boxers of all time
One of my two favorite boxers of all time, him and Locche.
What a master! Awesome!
In early 60s Liston hired Georgie as a sparring partner, and according to article I have, Liston was unable to land any clean blow on him.
Liston himself admitted that he was amazed by his defense.
SUPERB BOXING SKILLS
Thanks for the video
BEAUTIFUL , ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!
Un fenómeno!
you know what I like about this style u don't wast a lot of energy and you are always in pocket to strike good stuff old allday
Beautiful shoulder roll. The only thing he was lacking was being offensive with it and coming back with counters after the deflection. Other than that he may be one of the best to ever use the shoulder roll. The technique is flawless and he has definetely mastered the defensive side of the shoulder roll. I still rank James toney and Floyd Mayweather's shoulder roll more effective than his because of the fact that they made their opponents miss and then pay! Not just miss.
Great film study; dope soundtracks. That's how you know it's a HaNZAgod production.
What a great 👍
Shoulder roll yes, but that counter from toney in the pocket is a thing of beauty
His gravely voice lives in my head. To me it’s calming and reassuring.
George benton is my all time favorites boxer
You the man hanzagod
This is the real boxing 🥊💯
🥊Rest In Power Mr. G. “ The Professor “ Benton 🥊💯✊🏿🖤✊🏿
Awesome job hanza you must have alot of knowledge of the sport
This video is amazing, thanks hanza
The uncrowned champion.
MOVED EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE MW JAMES TONEY. MIRROR IMAGES OF EACH OTHER!
Garrett1240 I didn't know James Toney was older than Benton
Except Mayweather hugs and runs. On this video is a pure Shoulder roll defense.
THE GREATEST SHOULDER ROLLER
Floyd Jr. and Witaker totally bit his style. Benton and Locche are the best pure defensive boxers ever.
You're blind. Floyd's shoulder roll was nothing like Benton's. Benton hardly ever leaned back and kept his arms up high like Floyd. Though they're both shoulder rolls, each guy did it differently. If you wanna compare shoulder rolls then James Toney arguably had the most similar defense to Benton. What separated Benton and Toney's shoulder roll from Floyd's is that every move they made was designed in order to counter right back. To them it was a waste to evade a punch without intending to counter. Floyd wasn't like this at all, he evades punches and doesn't fire back a lot of the time. Benton and Toney were true counter punchers, while Floyd was a low-risk point fighter.
Great video as usual...love your work
TheFight Guru Thanks mate appreciate it.
+haNZAgod u got a twitter mate?
TheFight Guru I'm not a big Twitter user unfortunately :( A few people have told me to get into it but just haven't really got around to making an account yet.

Steeping up the game bro, great work
Looks so poised it's crazy.
this is what the new school learn from, GUYS LIKE THIS.AWWSOME
Great video of the legendary George Benton. BTW do you have a Rocky Castellani highlights?
I don't but that's a great idea and I definitely will get one made at some point in the near future. Stay tuned!
DAMN!!!
Floyd and benton legendary 💯
the different he stand n fight
Henry Hank had a natural defense you can't teach nobody that
Просто потрясающая техника
I've tried repeatedly doing the shoulder roll in sparring sessions the way George Benton does it but I can only do it the way Mayweather does it, by leaning back and raising the shoulder in a twisting motion to the right . I just don't understand how George Benton does It. it's easy to do it by leaning back, I've blocked a lot of punches using that defense. but I want to do it the way George Benton does it.
Mr Benton fluidly combined slipping, sliding, bobbing, weaving and rolling into his style. Try switching to southpaw a few times during sparring to practice rolling jabs and hooks to improve balance and upper body flexibility.
I agree. James Toney's shoulder roll was very similar to Benton's. Toney rarely leaned back when he rolled his shoulder unlike Floyd, instead he would change elevation, and move duck forward inside his opponent's reach, also like Benton. Locche was another guy who was much more similar to Benton and Toney than to Mayweather.
John AJ
But I find leaning back is much safer. Also, it tends to cause your opponents to overcommit.
James Toney tends to mix it up by ducking and weaving. Floyd tends to use footwork to get out of range, or go all the way in to smother his opponent. Floyd uses head control in the pocket.
Rocking back or not shoulder roll will protect your chin and jaw. Coaches and sparing partners don't always appreciate it
Tuck your chin into your shoulder like you're kissing it than as the punch starts to launch hunch and twist like your throwing a hook don't overly twist quarter twist or even a quarter turn can help as well being as though the opponent is aim at the firing line your head is in making that quarter turn or twist will give him illusion that the target will be there but isn't perfect example of a trap/bait scenario through a lazy up jab and make him confident to throw a right hand than twist or quarter pivot out in a fast motion than launch your straight right hand or the right upper cut to the bread basket for me mike macculm is a perfect example of what I'm talking about product of George Benton
Georgie vs rubin is good stuff
He's definetely not completely avoiding the punches and not getting hit, but not a single one actually hurt him or looked clean.
"The Professor"
+Andrew Muavae A true boxing master! Superb!
+George mendes couldnt of said it any better
It’s crazy because Floyd pretty much took this style elevated it by also using his feet and moving to not always be stationary.
Hey. New Subscriber.. Enjoy your work.. Can u do a video of my favorite fight Andre "SOG" Ward?
+Lucifer Mann Hey mate thanks for subscribing and yea sure I'll start working on it soon - Have had a ton of requests recently from people.
+haNZAgod Thanks. I really enjoy your work..
Pernell Sweet Pea Whitaker definitely took some pages out of Benton's book...
what's this song called
Wooooooe
Dam! I thought Floyd was good with this shit til I saw this..
He's not my favourite but Mayweather is the best of the last 25 Years probably. You can see he did his homework and was able to utilise so many styles to add to his natural talent. It's the hand speed that im always amazed at though. Even in his mid thirties.
Mayweather doesn't sign contracts that have opponents who actually throw real punches at him.. It's more, 2 men, dancing and checking each other out, than boxing. 🥊 🥊
Although i admit George Benton was a great defensive fighter, but in no way he can compare to the greatest of them all, i.e. The defensive master and genius, Nicolino locche, who would absolutely ridicule his opponents, with his defensive skills, who eventually lost their fights against him by sheer exaustion for punching continousely at thin air, and not for being hit by him, who really lacked any punching power, and because of this fact, his wins are more miraculus than any other fighter who had any shred of power whatsoever. don't take my word for it; go and whatch his videos, you'll be amazed.
Why does he not compare? He's the first boxer at least to my knowledge that effectively used the shoulder roll. He's widely considered to be one of the greatest defensive boxers of all time.
+haNZAgod Mate like i said in my comment, don't tate my word for it, and go and watch his wideo, and make up your own mind..then, contact me again and let me know what you think of him, and if you think i was right or wrong..simple as...
Sergio Dario I know who Locche is infact I have a video of him: ruclips.net/video/Qj-bLfsQSFQ/видео.html - I know a lot about defensive boxers my friend, here's my full playlist: ruclips.net/p/PLfbjKz220EvtozS4IXh-1AJHZ6rsic77_
haNZAgod
Ok, so you know who Nicolino locche is. What you didn't say though, was, what you thought of him, and if you agree or disagree with my judgement..i personally rate him the absolute master and number one in defensive skills..you may or may not agree with me, and that's the beauty of everyone being able to make their own mind up; but nobody can deny, in my modest opinion, what a genius he was..
Sergio Dario Yea Locche is clearly the best defensive boxer of all time in my opinion but to say Benton doesn't even compare with him? That's just not right in my opinion.
BORN IN NOT SWORN IN ASK ABOUT IT.. SHOT OUT WHOEVER PUT THIS TOGETHER ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️💖💗💪🏿 GRANDMA MILDRED NEEDS TO SEE THIS.. THANKS FOR THIS... POP POP NEED'S MORE RECOGNITION..A LOT OF NEW CAT'S AND SOME OLD BE LIKE WHO??? I BE PD
Is he the father of the philly shell then? Compared to Mayweather he seems to use more lateral movement and stay longer in the pocket like Toney, beautiful to watch but less economy of movement than Locche
No doubt https ????? was a defensive genius that relayed a lot on bending from waist , head movement and reflex’s in contrast to George Benton that moved his body in angle with much efficient economy of movement footwork .
As the body ages reflexes are the first to go , Benitez and Roy Jones are examples of this that took severe punishment towards the end of there careers
Make an Gene Fllmer Tribute :)
Dude kind of reminds me of Archie Moore. Crazy defense!
didn't Archie Moore use the cross armed guard, I've tried using the cross armed guard in boxing it leaves a lot of openings I don't know how the hell? he Was able to do it but I always get hit with an uppercut when I use it.
+John AJ that defense cuts the jab but was never made for uppercuts, uppercuts is just best to pull a Willie Pep fade
@@johnaj3643 concentrate and don't lean down....Keep your head up and don't block your sight. back up and throw the right while adversary goes towards you...if you saw that marciano being knocked down by him you'll know what I mean...Counter move-counter punch...Im trying to learn it too...here's where i got so far...Also the jab is great from archie's cross guard...from that point use it to conduse not to land hard jabs....
He is the reason it’s called the philly shell. George did it first but Floyd mastered it.
How did floyd master it it was already perfected by george he even train whitaker into a defensive madman just like he was
@@natoalvarez5762 yeah lol. 🤣
El primero con la técnica que luego emularon los mayweather y james toney
Wow. He would of been a problem back then With that defense.
When Toney and Floyd do stuff like this casuals go mad like they are godly skilled - it was pretty common back in the days to have skills -- now 99% of contenders just exchange punches behind an high guard and nothing more
Anyone know Benton's reach ?
アーチムーアや強いては後のメイウェザーJr.にも通ずるテクニックですな〜🎉
Are they the bmr
Floyd had the best defense which is called foot speed. Roy had it too but Floyd kept his longer.
Yo what is the actual name of the song because the one in the description isn’t it
The XX - Intro
@@hanzagod I remember when I first saw it, it had a different song. What the name of that song?
@@user-id7hq2yk7e This is the only song that's been used on this video
@@hanzagod Well thank you very much for the quick answer, big fan of your videos. Couple of minutes after I wrote this comment it suddenly came to my mind that I saw this video first time with 'Hit the road Jack' remix. So probably someone who copied this and uploaded it with different song, and then deleted. Again, thank you for quick answer!
@@hanzagod you had version where you use hit the road jack for a Benton highlight
This guy is way slicker than Floyd🥶no cap imagine a fight between the 2 wow chess match if the millennium
Founder Grandmaster Phily shell. of the shoulder roll. Master by James lights out Toney. And 50/0 T.B.E Mayweather
Look a henry hank
That’s fkn crazy cuz mayweather does it exactly the same way the game is hit but don’t get hit mastered that fkn defense
Y’all don’t see how he sliding tho!
Talking bout Locche
Floyd perfected it
Yo what's the track?
The xx - Intro
James Toney's father)
Gotta start sending this to people that say dumb ass shit like “fighters nowadays drop their hands don’t know where they learned that from “😂
Benton was lucky not to have fought Dick Tiger
Beautiful! Look like Mayweather perfected the shoulder roll.
Good vid share to Floyd maybe he remember how it's done and stop of hugging his opponents. LOL
Please do one of the best defensive fighter next! Niccolino Loche!
Vincent Marduk Moron.
+Vincent Marduk WOW dude 2016 !!!!! not cool you should have just used another curse word like bitch or something els
John AJ Negro?
He did the shoulder roll better than floyd
+Trevy Trev Obviously not, with 13 losses (2 by knockout).
+MrPhukYu Benton had harder opponents and didnt avoid fighting black boxers and never ducked anyone. Benton was a roll play master.
Psshhh... respect to Benton, but no. The level of opposition is nowhere near Floyd's.
James Toney and Benton both had better shoulder rolls than Floyd. floyd was a low-risk point fighter, Benton and Toney's entire goal with the shoulder roll was to counter.
Trevy Trev yah Benton had no footwork, he stayed in the pocket and by staying there u can't block every punch. money used better footwork and was a master at controlling and dectating distance
Not bad...Floyd Jr perfected it tho
Didn’t see him punching off of it like Floyd does
Mayweather has watched this video 859 times, and given a dislike for sure
+Alex Ortega Envy.....
Why would he dislike it? George Benton is one of many great fighters that Floyd was inspired by. God these Floyd haters are fucking idiots... so damn salty.
Lol this dont got nothing to do wit mayweather
The shoulder roll is great. Mayweather has basically taken a huge nasty shit on this style, but don't let that take away from it. An exciting fighter can use the shoulder roll.
How exactly did Mayweather take a shit on this style? Let's hear it
1 Theorelle He used it to never engage in fights and robbed fans of entertaining nights towards the end of his career.
+Buddy Boy12 besides his almost signature shoulder roll followed up with a shovel hook/ rear uppercut to catch people overextending
+Buddy Boy12 You're a fucking idiot.
Dumbass...
That's where Mayweather dad got the idea. enovated and now Floyd gets all the credit
Boxing is probably the only sport where the pros today are worse than the ones from years back. Hockey players now are better, footballers are better, track athletes are better. Boxers omg
That's how it is with everything that is in decline. Look at the sorry state of traditional Chinese martial arts. In the 19th century, Chinese martial art flourished because of China's instability and people needing to hire body guards and caravan guards. Nowadays barely anyone who does Chinese martial arts can fight
George Benton was my grandad.... not this George though as I'm from England
Mayweather jr learned a lot from this guy.
Mayweather Jr. learned a lot from Usain Bolt.....lol 😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄
Floyd's shoulder roll is very different from Benton's. James Toney, before he got fat, looked exactly like this guy in the ring. I mean their movements are almost mirror images of each other. Imo Toney had a better shoulder roll than Floyd, and he learned it all from Benton.
Most people think that Floyd invented philly shell but because poor intellect of boxing they didn't the George is the one that created philly she'll then it passed on to fighters later on
No Benton didn't invent the shoulder roll. Edward Haislet wrote a boxing manual in 1940 and it had the shoulder roll in it, so people must've been doing it even before then
LOOKS like Floyd Mayweather stoled the Shoulder Roll from George Benton.
Ignorant people see a boxing lineage and call it theft
