  • Hello everyone, in this video I went out to dark skies to grab an image of the green comet C/2022 E3 ZTF! As a forewarning, don't expect it to look like this with your naked eye. This comet is way overhyped by the news and is in reality very underwhelming and not special at all, but I went to shoot it anyways because it is very hyped right now. This video shows the whole process of comet capture and editing, some on the technical side so you can learn how to edit comet images yourself. This comet has a chance of getting brighter, but I highly doubt it will look very good by its closest approach to earth.
If you're looking to pick up a good telescope to view comets, here is my recommendation: bit.ly/3xe2Kjw
If you want to support this channel I have fine art prints of this image available here: astrofalls.com/

@@astrofalls yup, good thing you were using the Rokinon too ...
been having some issues with mine ... I paired it with the 585 in SVBONY flavour and despite taking 60 secs shots with the CLS filter, my images came out very soft with puffy stars .... could be the filter ... don't know... and I haven't had another clear night to test out sans filter... although I might have to bring the exposures down a bit ... 17.85 SQM ... so yeah. or try the UHC filter ... I would love to get a narrow band filter for it but I am quite reserved as many are either for short FL or for medium to long FL ... Idas gnb looks good...
glad you have your Rokinon rig all sorted!

Thanks for this video Bray, beautiful end result and just what I was looking for in terms of processing. Subtracting the stars from the comet aligned individual light frames makes so much sense!! Not sure if entirely understand why you'd also subtract the background from each of the star aligned frames though. Do you know what the rational for that is as opposed to subtracting it after stacking?

Wow this was so insightful! All the photos looked amazing too, including the final one 😍 I am in London and thought I saw it last night with naked eye.. it looked like a bright star with flickering green-yellowish tail, nothing that impressive really, I thought it was an airplane at first, but then quickly realized it wasn't.. the skies were perfectly clear and pitch dark, and (what I thought was) the comet was near Ursa Minor constellation in my eye view.. I think I was more surprised than anything 😅 anyway, your setup is so cool and these videos are very informative! Thanks a lot! Oh, and do you have any advice on how to start with astrophotography? Courses or any material you'd be willing to share? Thanks a lot 🌛

Hello, I'm an Astronomer since 30 years and i studied map of light pollution, if you want to have a really dark sky in Texas you can go near Marathon (Trans Pecos ) or North-West of Guthrie ( near Dumont. This 2 spot ( the first is well-known ... but the second one ??? ) are really dark sites according to light pollution maps.

18:30 Ok, so it's not just me 😅 I actually got 2 clear-ish nights (in between rain storms) to photograph ZTF & when reviewing my images**, I noticed that spurt of light coming from the bottom of the comet...& thought I was doing something very wrong lol!
But I guess it just does have 2 "tails".
**extremely simple set-up: tripod, mirrorless camera & 105mm prime (in crop mode for 157mm).

I was very irritated by that, too. I looked it up. Seems to be the so called antitail, which is just a result of perspective.

With your flats, did you put a shirt or something on the end of the telescope or did you just take a photo of the blue sky? If you did, then that makes flats a whole lot easier 😂

No need for a tshirt. The tshirt is only needed if there is partial clouds. If it is perfectly clear the light doesn't need any more diffusion
