I captured the Green Comet!! C/2022 E3 ZTF

- Hello everyone, in this video I went out to dark skies to grab an image of the green comet C/2022 E3 ZTF! As a forewarning, don't expect it to look like this with your naked eye. This comet is way overhyped by the news and is in reality very underwhelming and not special at all, but I went to shoot it anyways because it is very hyped right now. This video shows the whole process of comet capture and editing, some on the technical side so you can learn how to edit comet images yourself. This comet has a chance of getting brighter, but I highly doubt it will look very good by its closest approach to earth.
If you're looking to pick up a good telescope to view comets, here is my recommendation: bit.ly/3xe2Kjw
If you want to support this channel I have fine art prints of this image available here: astrofalls.com/

Absolutely knocked this out of the park, Bray. Incredible image and presentation! 👏
Ohhhh hi Mr. Trevor.. 😃❤ wow... good to see that you are here..❤👋👌
Hello sir, I am from India and I am a big fan of yours. I find your videos and the images of deep space very amazing. ❤

@@sakuntharanaweera2457 nice to meet you too brother
Thanks Trevor!
One of the best descriptions of how to do this that I’ve seen! Nicely done.🔭🍻
Thanks Ron!

Thank you for making it possible to see the comet so clearly! We had cloudy skies all the week 😭
when I saw the initial frames I thought 🤔 I don't know how good that's going to be....
then the results spoke for themselves... can't believe how good your editing skills are!
Thanks Alex! The data from my wide system rescued this photo. It had way better SNR on the tail
@@astrofalls yup, good thing you were using the Rokinon too ...
been having some issues with mine ... I paired it with the 585 in SVBONY flavour and despite taking 60 secs shots with the CLS filter, my images came out very soft with puffy stars .... could be the filter ... don't know... and I haven't had another clear night to test out sans filter... although I might have to bring the exposures down a bit ... 17.85 SQM ... so yeah. or try the UHC filter ... I would love to get a narrow band filter for it but I am quite reserved as many are either for short FL or for medium to long FL ... Idas gnb looks good...
glad you have your Rokinon rig all sorted!
Really nice final result Bray. Fantastic!! My weather forecast for Sunday morning was mostly clear, but alas it was not so. The north was completely clouded over, the rest of the sky wasn't so clear either. I'm hoping to get another shot by the end of the week but we've got back to back snowstorms for now. Ugh!!
The weather has been a huge pain for sure! I feel like we missed the ion tail completely

Hey, cool galaxy off to the left as well.
I'm so, SO glad you showed how it looks like raw, i was and stil am planning to go hunt this comet, i had huge expectations and you humbled me down, i hope it will be better than expected now an i won't be dissapoined
Really great video, congrats for the effort, would you advise to use a standard camera for best color results or a h-alpha moded camera?
Excellent video Bray, hoping to capture this beaut tomorrow! Clear skies :D
Thanks helena! Hope you got some good shots
Awesome job Bray!
Dude! I have been trying to get this CometAlignment to work for me in PI and you nailed it! Thank you I can finally stack my 500 subs of the emerald comet without my starts looking like bullet holes LOL. I got so many subs as I am near Chicago and they were 5 second subs at F2 on a RASA 8 🙂 I am intrigued by the gear you use as I am trying to escape the rabbit hole myself! Awesome final image! Subscribed and Clear Skies!
You better have a good GPU for 500 subs! Glad this video helped
@@astrofalls Yep I have a RTX A5000 and it makes the AI scream LOL 15 seconds per sub 🙂
Great work. Looks like you captured the needle Galaxy as well.
I feel so lucky God is making it a clear sky for me tomorrow night. Haven't had clear skies in a little over a month and I'm finally going to be able to get clear skies and it just so happens it's when the comet is at her closest point so I feel so blessed. It's going to be my first Astro picture of a comment so you can imagine how happy I am. And I'm super happy you guys got good images of it too. Clear skies everyone!
Thanks you for taking the time to show how to process with a container, new to me and great for over night processing lots of files... Great image too, hope mine is even close...
Pretty nice capture, it's very cool that u can see another galaxy
6:31 watching on slow mo with Bridge of Khazad Dum in the background... so magical. thank you sir for sharing with us 😢
This is both disheartening and impressive. I knew there was post processing involved but goes to show how much of the final image goes to making it look good.
Awesome bro.....just beautiful.
I'm in the Atlanta area. I leave for work at 4:20am.
Using my best "reckoning", ("okay, sunrise is over there, that means west is over there, that means north-east is there!") Not surprisingly, I saw nothing.
Thank you so much for your efforts and for posting. Thanks!
Awesome job Bray! I'd be doing more observing if it wasn't always so cloudy.
I live in Brazil not here this summer
there are almost no clouds
Yeah it's so cloudy in my country....at least i got ONE clear night and i took a photo of the comet!
This channel deserves millions of subscribers!
Thanks for this video Bray, beautiful end result and just what I was looking for in terms of processing. Subtracting the stars from the comet aligned individual light frames makes so much sense!! Not sure if entirely understand why you'd also subtract the background from each of the star aligned frames though. Do you know what the rational for that is as opposed to subtracting it after stacking?
Wow this was so insightful! All the photos looked amazing too, including the final one 😍 I am in London and thought I saw it last night with naked eye.. it looked like a bright star with flickering green-yellowish tail, nothing that impressive really, I thought it was an airplane at first, but then quickly realized it wasn't.. the skies were perfectly clear and pitch dark, and (what I thought was) the comet was near Ursa Minor constellation in my eye view.. I think I was more surprised than anything 😅 anyway, your setup is so cool and these videos are very informative! Thanks a lot! Oh, and do you have any advice on how to start with astrophotography? Courses or any material you'd be willing to share? Thanks a lot 🌛
You did an amazing job, it looks amazing
Thanks Rishi!
Great work, thank you! Curious why you didn't just create a star image via StarXterminator and use that, rather than the comet deletion / star extraction tool in comet align?
Amazing job! Would be imaging it but it’s been cloudy for so long
I knowww...
0:17 Spectacular view, I am out of words, but this scene makes me feel peaceful and the music is so soothing
Amazing!!! Greetings from Brazil!!
heyy, its amazing its not possible to even get a glimpse of it here in the city
ik its lot to ask for but Can you make a video on how to edit and stack images from basics
That looks amazing! Would low f number scopes produce better results like RASA?
Interesting video, a bit hard to follow because it goes fast :-) , Great end result, pity that the comet lost his ion tail, but I guess it will change a lot in the next days/weeks
Thank you for this!!! The ice storm hit the DFW area the week of the comet and I was so so disappointed I was missing it. :(((
Great equipment!
Wow that comet is very beautiful
Amazing ✨
Great job 👍
Hello, I'm an Astronomer since 30 years and i studied map of light pollution, if you want to have a really dark sky in Texas you can go near Marathon (Trans Pecos ) or North-West of Guthrie ( near Dumont. This 2 spot ( the first is well-known ... but the second one ??? ) are really dark sites according to light pollution maps.
My buddy just recently got a farm in the mountains and there is no city light pollution in the sky, just atmosphere wabble 😅 in order to fight that I just use a less powerful telescope because rn I don't need to look at galaxies and what not. I'm on with what's in our solar system for now, so comets is one of those things that I always wanted to see. Good capture man!!
AAAAWWW!!! STUNNING INDEED FROM, U. K. (2023). THANK YOU !
I saw the comet but it was just a faint blur for me. All I had were some binoculars and my phone so a picture was out of the question lol. It was amazing to see it either way. This is a great picture!
I have class 1 dark skies about 15 min drive from my house in Palm Springs. Went down there this weekend and saw it with a decent pair of binoculars
Wow!wow! Thank you thank you!🤩
Hello Bray.
Congratulation for that work at night and later on the computer.
The steps in Pixinsight can be followed with a lot of attention.
But your work in Photoshop is a miracle for me.
Is it possible that you describe your workflow in PS?
I am planning to be out tonight with a simple star tracker and a 200mm lens on Sony Alpha full frame.
Thanks in advance.
Greetings from southern Germany.

Ive been following this comet for a month and now thats its the perfect time to capture it its been cloudy for like a week and this entire week their will be clouds 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬😡😡😡😡😡😡😠😠😠😠😠😠😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕

Good job!!
WOOOOOOOW it was magnificent 😍🙌
Superb 👏👏👏
Very nice, we've had solid cloud cover for at least 2 weeks. Its too bad, usually in Winter we get some of the nicest clearest nights.
Wow dude!
Beautiful imaging...
🙂
Really nice image! I'm in the southern hemisphere so I can't see it yet
All my bike trips through Utah a couldnt believe how clean camp sites were. Bath room were so clean best in all the states.
Great video. What was your exposure time?
One problem is that the image container does not take an account the linear setting of the starnet. So even if you set to linear and apply to the container it will use the non-linear star removal and the result is not good.
awesome pal love u bud
Thankyou...
wish i could of seen it at its closest/brightest but i couldn't, cant wait to see it later in the month tho!
18:27, extra bonus, a edge-on galaxy, NGC 5907.
I stayed outside for 2 hours watching with my telescope and binoculars in the spot the comet was supposed to be, but nothing, not even a "star" bigger than the others and now I'm pretty sad, but nice video and thanks for showing me what I haven't seen. I'd give everything to have your equipment....
and a clearer sky -_-
Hey brother any chance your selling pictures of the green comet. I’ve been out several times looking for the comet and I’ve only seen it once with my telescope. I don’t have all that gear you have for a great photo.
Alright bruh, what's your set up? You could even put a referral link in there. It's beautiful
I’m curious to know why you chose a DSLR for your main scope? Is it more suited to comet imaging for some reason or is it what you had at your disposal?
Various reasons, like the adapter situation and not wanting to edit a mono comet image. I had a 6200mm on hand but did not want to deal with editing mono comet data. Huge PITA
@@astrofalls ah ok that makes sense. I figured since half your gear is out at remote sites you may have been limited. I’m Imaging comets for the first time and using OSC Astro cam and wondered if I were missing a trick but I think my setup is up to it.
Let it go! Let it go!
Hey Bray, I have a question that I hope you can answer. Can you tell me the name of the music / song that plays at the beginning and end of your video? Or maybe the name of the composer? I know I have heard it somewhere else, but could not remember if my life depended on it. Hope you help. By the way, awesome job! The final result of your hard work, impressive.
Impressive.
Bra jobbat 👍🤝
Heyy great shot Bray 🥺🤯is the Comet visible with the naked eye, or is it just the myth?
It's possible capture that comet in a 60mm telescope only using a cellphone's camera?
Where can i find manuals, photos, drafting of hardware
thanks again!! :)
oh... I thought it was last "seen"\here, 50,000 years ago... that's what I was hearing...
or is it the closest it's been in that amount of time? (media wise)...
Where can I get the same hoodie ?
Does anyone know the name of the piece of music that plays at the beginning and end of this video? Maybe know the name of the composer?
Bray, have you checked which galaxy that is, perhaps a PGC or UGC galaxy? Ill check Stellarium.
🤜🏼⚡️🤛🏻
I'm from Namibia. Did you enjoy the night sky there?
18:30 what's that galaxy on the right? Andromeda?
I couldn't do comet subtraction and got an "Error: Invalid object coordinates" when I apply it to my comet aligned frames. What should I do?
I had this same problem. I don't know if the new alignment tool has a bug in it or what but got the error every time I tried. Wish someone would post a fix here.
What millimeter is the lens?😅
What bortle scale sky was this picture taken?
Is that a galaxy at the left hand side of the image?
Yes, an edge on galaxy.
Camera?

You make it all seem so easy! Great work Bray! Oh also, an early Happy Birthday to you! ~ Phil (@philsutphin)
For a newbee like me this is really a great help :) Can I ask you something? I am stuck at the last time you tell me to use cometalignment with my cometaligned subframes. I got this fail:
CometAlignment: Global context
*** Error: Invalid object coordinates: L:/COMET/3. forsøg/Cometalignment/_MG_9478_r_ca.xisf
I cant see what I am doing wrong. Can you maybe help me?
❤❤
Certified dank bray, certified
if space is endless how does a comet pass us back again if it already passed once ????
Sux its cloudy here in East mesa
GREAT video, trying it on my Mono RGB data..keep hitting a snag. can you advise??? when doing the comet alignment and subtracting the new starless comet image as the operand, it gives this error: CometAlignment: Global context
*** Error: Invalid object coordinates: G:/Telescope Deep Sky Photos/Comet 2022 E3 ZTF/comet2/comet aligned/_2023-01-22_LIGHT_Green_56_20_60.00_-21.70_339.50_0000_04-28-52_c_lps_r_ca.xisf
which is the first comet-aligned star image, so it wont even get past the first image. what's wrong?
Hello, how can I blend them in pixinsight? Would it look good to just add them in pixelmath?
yeah you could use the max() command to do the same blend
@@astrofalls I tried the method in this video, but the starnet didnt work on individual frames. It left the image full of squares of gray. Do you know why this might be?
I Love the extra nerdy type, I can't wait to see the Comet C/2023 E3 (ZTC)! Amazing footage!!! Thankyou!
What colour is it?
Can someone Tell me the Name from the Song?
Find nothing 😢
I have been trying for 2 days now, the skies were pretty clear, but saw absolutely nothing🥺🙃
I did it too!
you can either get up early or go to bed late 😎
Wish NZ north island wasnt underneath cloud and rain... So i could turn my telescope on it
Buchanan Dam is also max total eclipses for the upcoming April year 2024 Great Texas solar eclipse. THATS where I'll be.
18:30 Ok, so it's not just me 😅 I actually got 2 clear-ish nights (in between rain storms) to photograph ZTF & when reviewing my images**, I noticed that spurt of light coming from the bottom of the comet...& thought I was doing something very wrong lol!
But I guess it just does have 2 "tails".
**extremely simple set-up: tripod, mirrorless camera & 105mm prime (in crop mode for 157mm).
I was very irritated by that, too. I looked it up. Seems to be the so called antitail, which is just a result of perspective.
With your flats, did you put a shirt or something on the end of the telescope or did you just take a photo of the blue sky? If you did, then that makes flats a whole lot easier 😂
No need for a tshirt. The tshirt is only needed if there is partial clouds. If it is perfectly clear the light doesn't need any more diffusion
third nightie a row trying for me, im sure ill walk away with nothing again lol
