Vancouver's 1550 Alberni : Meet The Canadian Luxury Condo Tower Shaped By The Environment

  • The design of 1550 Alberni Street is shaped by its environment. The 43-storey tower is carved by two emphatic scoops that form deep balconies furnished in wood. In both instances, the carvings create semi-enclosures that strengthen their relations to the street and to the views - to its urban and geographic context while optimizing neighbouring views past the project.
Because of the way the otherwise orthogonal tower is carved, its silhouette constantly changes, creating illusionary profiles of arching cantilevers. The reality is far more structured as the carved deductions are diagonally symmetrical, the lower portion helping to counterbalance the hanging volume above.
The tower meets the ground with two intersecting domes that embrace Alberni and Cardero. Under the arching structures, an extensive moss garden defines the entrance and flows to the swimming pool above. In keeping with Japanese spatial traditions, the emphasis is on the atmosphere rather than the object: without drawing attention to a particular point laden with meaning, the void elicits a serene visceral experience that could be shared by all.
1550 Alberni will include intricate design details such as woodwork in the plinth, interior design of residential tower, and a Japanese Restaurant experience designed by Kengo Kuma Architects and Associates.

Thanks for watching. You know, I love so much Vancouver but the city is so unaffordable. Individual houses have an average prices of $2 million and condos are close to reach the million dollar mark. Even if you a have a 6 figures income, you re not rich. You can even be in the lower middle class with that income. And if you are only a millionaire and not a multli millionaire, you are in the middle class. But accumulate $1 million is not easy and not many people do not earn a 6 figure income in Vancouver. It s only a small minority. It s sad to say that, but such an expensive real estate market it s as if everyone was rich. But in reality, there s a lot of poverty there and the middle class people are forced to leave the city, because they cant afford to live there. It s the second most unaffordable real estate market in the world after Hong Kong. As a proud Canadian, I am sad to see that. I would have been glad to live in Vancouver, but the situation is lost. Even if I become a millionaire, I don t think I will buy something there, because real estate prices are totally disconnected from the reality.
However, what scare me is that the real estate prices become like Vancouver everywhere in the world. This scenario is like an armageddon. I see that houses prices rise faster than incomes, so this scenario is possible. Only the richs will be able to own something and the poors will maybe live in slums. The government is doing nothing serious to address this future armageddon. And I don t think he will built social housing like in the 60s or the 70s.The poor and the middle class will be toasted. This is why, if we can, we have the obligation to become rich before it s too late. The society will have serious trouble. Thank you and I would like a reply to see your opinion about the situation.

Yes, you're right, Vancouver if unaffordable now. Prices started going up when they announced the 2010 winter Olympics was going there, and it just kept rising. Even older houses that need renovations are a million dollars. The government was more than happy to let the prices rise, because they kept collecting higher amounts of property tax. Now they are panicking, but it's too late. I don't see how the situation can improve unfortunately...@@megaprojectsanddevelopments

@@MyWalkAround Thanks for your reply. I Don t think there s a viable solution to the problem. It s not only a vancouver s problem, but also a worldwide problem now. Nobody raise the issue but it s slowly destroying our society. A major crisis is expected very soon, because no one will be able to afford something . It will be the richs vs the poors.,but the richs will win, because they have all the necessary resources. It s the future of our world, my dear unfortunately. Believe me if someone is rich, it s for the well being of the world.

Beautiful, unique, but how sustainable is it ? A million for a studio ! Come on, that is ridiculous. So much for affordable. But maybe not so bad, cause you won't need a car, there is no place to park it. Beautiful but far from practical.
