FIFA's 1974 World Cup Qualification Disgrace

  • In 1973, Chile and the Soviet Union faced each other in qualifying for the 1974 FIFA World Cup finals in West Germany, in one of the most infamous two-legged football matches of all time.
    The decision that FIFA took in anticipation of the second leg between the two teams at the Estadio Nacional in Santiago is yet another blot on the copybook of world football's governing body.

    Love how HITC Sevens isn't afraid to get political or call-out how shitty FIFA is. Politics is engrained in the sport, so it's nice to see someone comment on it with a fair bit of nuance and grace.

    This was a good history lesson, but another qualification travesty took place in CONCACAF'S 1973 qualification. Trinidad and Tobago had 5 goals disallowed against Haiti (who qualified) and lost the game 2-1. The match officials for that game were banned for life.

    • @jakubrauba5759
      @jakubrauba5759 5 месяцев назад

      I know it's been 3 years, but:
      1. It wasn't a semifinal technically - it was the last round of the 2nd group stage, but it just happened to be the final/3rd place match decider. Just as with the 1950 "final".
      2. The conditions weren't really ridiculous, but @simonkevnorris is right, the raining was super heavy and the game is known in Poland as "The game on water". It punished Polish offensive-minded team, which also had to win, with a draw promoting the West Germany. Add to that a series of very good, but missed chances and you get one of the most famous games in our history. I'm not sure if it was supposed to postponed or sth by the rules and possibly wasn't, as even in Poland we don't complain about that.
      3. HOWEVER, i'M pretty sure that the story of the Polish NT is worth a video, since we pretty much came out of nowhere and all thanks to 1 guy: the legendary coach Kazimierz Górski. ALSO, that team's story has several common points with the Hungarians from the 50s (e.g. Olympics victory or defeat to Germans).

    As ever, a very entertaining script for a history dive, Alfie! You read this type of content with more strength and smoothness in your delivery (I write and broadcast, myself), and it's a great look at a story that's been lost to time. Your writing certainly stands out against other channels that make videos on the history of the game, and you hit the nail on the head when you got some steam going on the Soviets' decision to stay home - the right call, no matter their motivations.
    I will admit I gave a bit of a wag of the finger when you backtracked a bit on your word choice regarding the status of the workers in Qatar! That slam dunk on the Albert Speers (especially with how right you got it when discussing the Speer Myth, and of course, that ending) remains my absolute favorite of your videos.

    • @Farerets
      @Farerets 3 года назад

      Soviets were idiots, who just outsmarted themselves.
      Instead of requesting a single (or for that sake two) match on a neutral venue, they duly welcomed Chileans in Moscow (two weeks after Pinochet coup d´etat and all events at Estadio Nacional!), hoping that they were going to win by three-four goals before their trip to South America. The first leg didn´t go according to their plan, so they just withdrew, being afraid of a result in the return match. It wasn´t only about Estadio Nacional, it´s certain that they wouldn´t had gone to, say, Arica either - or any place in Chile, especially having memories from 1962 world cup still quite fresh at that time.

    For context the numbers killed and tortured by the Chilean government in the whole 15 years of Pinochet dictatorship was less than those killed or tortured in a single day in Soviet Russia. Also it could be argued that leftist hero Che Guevara killed more by his own hand than were killed by The Pinochet regime in total. When it came to killing Pinochet was an absolute amateur compared to the 20th Century's socialist dictatorships.

      On the contrary, the Soviets making a big deal out of this in the Cold War climate just cast more suspicion on Pinochet's opponents - they must have been our enemies if the Soviets cared so much. We might not have approved of Pinochet's methods, but when the chips were down, he was on our side - proper enemy of my enemy stuff. Similar line in South Africa: it's our vicious racist bar-steward allies or a bunch of Marxist terrorists. This was the way in which a lot of people in the West regarded the situation - Sir Stanley Rous was not exceptional in this, and his downfall at the time was a very bad thing, as it showed how far gone towards the Commies many countries were. We need to be careful not to judge the past through an anachronistic prism.

    The Australian-Chile match at the 1974 World Cup cursed both nations to fail at the sport for a long time. Chile lost almost all of its team to defection. It took Chile 24 years to qualify for the World Cup again. And for Australia. We had to endure 32 years of pure misery and soccer as a sport almost died to. And it was Australia’s only clean sheet for 48 years too. The two nations did play again at the 2014 World Cup in which Chile won.

    Of course you left out the part that the Allende government razed all the successful manufacturing industries in Chile, killed agriculture and mining, and we all had to line up weekly for half a kilo of sugar and flour, one roll of toilet paper, while Allende had two cheetahs, two peacocs, a crocodile in his mansion as well as all the food and drink he and his cronies could sell on the black market. Disappearences and as Pink Floyd said "the standard issue knocking down the door" was common during his reign. Additionally his government encouraged people to take over homes of their neighbour and police were prohibited from intervening. What do you gain by presenting a clearly biased story? Leaving facts out does not negate them.

    Thank you for the video! I'll add two stories:
    Carlos Caszely, a Chilean striker at the time, refused to shake the dictator's hand. I'm told it was a very powerful moment. His mom had been tortured by the regime, presumably because of his son's political views. There's a mini-series hosted by Cantona that tells the story.
    Chamaco Valdés, another Chilean player, who was seen as politically neutral, is said to have freed (probably saved) a few people related to the football world by just walking up to the military men and telling them that he wouldn't play if they didn't release them.
    I'm ashamed of the fact Pinochet died as a free man.

    A great insight into one of the most disgraceful episodes in World Sports History (with the passive and not so passive support of Richard Milhous ["I'm not a crook"] Nixon, the CIA and the good ol' US of A). However, there is one historical error at the front of the film ("by September 1973, 15 of the 16 Nations that would be at the 1974 World Cup had been confirmed"). In fact, by the end of September 1973, only 4 of the 16 finalists had been confirmed - Brazil (as defending champions under the old custom discontinued from the 2006 finals), West Germany (as hosts), Uruguay (who were the first nation to come through qualifying when they won their 3 team South American Group by goal difference over Colombia on July 8 with a 4-0 win over Ecuador in Montevideo [in the days when South America was split into small qualifying groups]), and Scotland (who wrapped up the first qualifying berth out of Europe when they won their Group with a game to spare on September 26 - eliminating Czechoslovakia with a 2-1 win over the Czechs at Hampden Park, Glasgow before nearly 96,000 heaving Scottish fans). 3 teams qualified in October, 1973 (Argentina, Italy and Poland [thanks to their famous draw with England at Wembley]). 6 more qualified in November, 1973 (Australia [for the first time after winning their last play-off 1-0 over South Korea in neutral Hong Kong after 2 earlier home and away draws], Bulgaria, East Germany, Netherlands, Sweden [with a playoff win over Austria] and of course Chile as a result of the happenings described in this film). Zaire (now Congo DR - the only African qualifier for 1974) and Haiti (the only CONCACAF qualifier for 1974) secured their spots in December 1973. The 16th and final place went to Yugoslavia with their 1-0 win over Spain in the last European play off on 13 February 1974 in neutral Frankfurt, West Germany.
