PLATINUM SG COPY BY MONTEREY: CLEAN & SET UP!

  • I picked up this very well made Platinum SG copy for $160 2nd hand, but virtually unplayed.
It is really well made, but the Frets are all over the place & will NEED a serious fret level!
The pick ups are rubbish, but that's to be expected!
It is @ the luthier now, getting the frets done, a new BRASS nut and the head stock remodeled/sized, so it will FIT in a standard guitar case! (It's about 10mm too tall as is!)

Glad you posted this video. I bought same guitar off gumtree for $100. Thing was brand new. I have previously owned an epi sg and a USA sg. I found the USA sg to be so fickle and light any movement between neck and body while playing was basically a tremolo effect! Preferred the epi to be honest. Bit more stable. I bought this cheapy coz it really looks killer! I missed having a cherry sg in my studio just for eye candy. You’ve given me some confidence to actually make it a player.
    Cheers

G'day Joe! IF you got 1 for $100, that is an absolute steal!
I got this 1 for $160, + spent around $140 getting the frets levelled & a new set of tuners on it, plus I added a spare roller bridge left over from my Artist LP!
It plays like BUTTER, now. Seriously good! Pick ups are shite, I will swap a custom set from Mr. Fab from another guitar, that are way better!
I picked another up just b4 Xmas, for $140. They wanted $190, and it had been etched with designs into it! LOL! I offered $140 & they bit! This 1 is even better, but I have had to sand back the flat edges and resprayed with black! It's coming up nice!
Didn't even plug it in! just stripped all the h/w & electronics on it as I knew they were crap!
What I LIKE also is the weight! Perfectly balanced an SG! Just HANGS there! NO need to hold it to play!
I have not handled the LP version of the Monterrey Platinum, but I hear they are well made as well!
IF you see either, just grab a few, & do them up! They have very hard, nickel frets, so won't wear easily!
I'd say DON'T pay any more than ~$150 for a used 1 unless it is unplayed & still in the box! They retailed new @ JB for about $380! They KILL the entry to upper mid level Epiphones!
You CAN'T buy a finished body and neck, with 1/2 decent woods alone for that sort of price!
      Cheers!

@@DMSProduktions hey thanks for all the info. Great stuff! Yeah I knew it was a jb hifi thing. Got lots of guitars, the only ‘flex’ one I got is a USA strat.. CBS era fat headstock. Damn, great guitar. As you say, like butter. Had the USA sg, disappointed. Got an Edwards gold top LP, beautiful. Point is… as I was hoping. I reckon I’m gonna be happy with my shitty $100 JB Hi FI guitar! And it does look killer! (Probably one of the best looking copies going). It actually plays pretty good as is! I’m looking forward to doing it up using your advice.

I think JB bought out the Monterrey brand some years ago, & made it house, with the Platinum series being the better quality to compete with Epi & Squier in the Fender styles!

Hey dude, I haven't gotten round to upgrading this guitar but I had a fret level done and a new brass nut put on, & it plays amazingly.
The extra weight make it balance perfectly on a strap!
Now as to the fret board, I use paraffin oil, & the steel wool was just a generic 0000 grade wool!

I just picked one up at Cashy’s for $130. Serious fret sprout, pots are lose and flipping around everywhere, needed a whole turn to the truss rod. action was as high as Everest but it’s such a pretty little thing. Not a full body but who cares. Going to do the frets tonight, oil the board and deepen the nut grooves on the low strings. Good sustain even with the rusty strings on it and the dry nut!

Looks like yours had a bit of neglect! That 1, was in mint cond! Hardly played! I have seen 2 more in the past fortnight on Gummy! Would grab another if they dropped to around $150~! These are some of the HEAVIEST SG types I've ever played! (INC real 1s!) Perfect balance, as the body is a tad thicker than spec, so it's great!
The fret wire used on them is HARD nickel! They aren't levelled well, but once you get them right, they will wer alm as well as stainless!
My example now plays like butter! The neck is a bit chunkier than I am used to, but it's good! Med C as opposed to a shallow C!
Had the headstock reshaped to Gibson style as it was too TALL to fit in a case, & a bell brass nut!
Pick ups and pots are rubbish! Had a spare Gotoh roller bridge so I stuck that on, & a new set of keystone tuners!
Just have to replace the pick ups and pots!
Apart from that, it's 1 of my main player now!
Underrated for actual build quality anyway!
      Thanks for watching!

Nice looking SG copy, pretty authentic looking. Not come across a Monterey before!
Better headstock than an Epi, but would have to change that trussrod cover and pickup selector nut for a knurled one!
    But that’s just me!
No tone test, so what do the pickups sound like?
Are you going to replace them with something like Tonerider Alnico II/V?

    • @DMSProduktions
      @DMSProduktions  3 года назад +2

Haha! Monterey is an Aussie brand. They make decent copy instruments in China and Korea. (Similar to the Ashton brand.)
Headstock has been remodelled as it is actually too TALL to fit in a standard SG case, and now sports a Gibson shape.
As to the pick ups, they are utter shite! Underwound, ceramic, unpotted hum buckers! Totally underwhelming! Totally microphonic! They sound kinda ok clean, but add some overdrive and they squeal like a piggy! Squeal piggy! EEIIIIIII!!!!
I will do a stock demo, just to show how BAD they sound! The frets were terrible, with lots of high 1s. BUT, use very hard nickel wire, so won't wear easily. Had them leveled, recrowned and burnished! Plays really well now!
As to the pick ups, I'd never go near an Dimarzios! No, some Durbanos from Mr. Fabulous are my go tos these days. I have another custom made SG, with a set of Durbano LIX PAFS in it. I may swap them over, as this guitar is far better balanced than the other, and I may get Mr. Fab to make me a set of PAF sized P90s to put in the old 1!
New pots and switch as well, as the originals are the cheap, rinky dinky ones!
      Cheers Guv!

This 1 needed a LOT of work as the frets were all OVER the place!
Once I had them levelled, crowned & burnished, this guitar now plays itself virtually! Sounds like shit due to the rubbish pick ups, but is 1 of my best players!

      @DMSProduktions  2 года назад +2

@@trevormustey4418 Buildwise they are very nice for the $! HEAVY mahogany type wood, bound fretboard, good fretwire, just poorly levelled! If it's got actives, it's already been upgraded. Yours sounds like it's had SOME set up work done on it, if you only have a few fret buzzes, BUT if the action is not to your liking, (esp if too high) it might need some more levelling done on a few frets!
As to the pick ups, they WILL be better than what came with them from the factory. Depends on what you like I guess. The sound MIGHT suit you, it might not!
Otherwise, put a decent set of passive pick ups in it.
IF you don't want to spend large amounts on it, you can get, decent, pick ups cheap from places like Guitarfetish.com. I used to use a lot of their pick ups & they're pretty good for $30-40 each!
