Around the 10:00 minute mark Jaimee talks about instinctual acts of play. I couldn't help but immediately think of the famous speech made by John Kennedy in '74 as coach of Hawthorn FC, here in Australia playing in the VFL, now known as AFL.
Known as the Mayblooms from 25-49, the club was the perennial whipping boy of the league with a casual attitude towards the game. The club played their first finals series in '57 winning week 1 but knocked out the following. 3 more seasons passed finishing mid table and this is when it all changed...
John Kennedy took control in '60 taking them from easy beats to the most respected and revered club in the League. He epitomised and taught all the values and attitudes that the club cherishes to this day. These were overwhelmingly a sense of TEAM, total DISCIPLINE, total INTEGRITY, and WILL to WIN at all costs. These traits and ethos created the Hawthorn FC of today which is the only club to have won premierships in each decade of the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s. This is an incredible achievement when you consider a club like saint kilda havent won a single premiership in 58 years, last tasting success in '66..
Sorry for the tangent! Back on track....the speech. In '75, John Kennedy who was known for his oratory skills, gave his famous speech imploring his players not not to leave it for someone else to do, not to say oh youll do it next time but for each and every individual to not think but 'do'. Win, lose or draw(unfortunately they did lose) but it was about winning the ball, cooperation as a team, being desperate and it may well go wrong but if he as the coach was game enough to say it, are you player's game enough to back me up on that?
The speech is obviously much longer but what adds to the emotion of it all was that the club captain Peter Crimmins had battled testicular cancer that year with two bouts of chemo and only managing to play 5 games in the reserves, whilst declaring he was fit and eager to play the club ultimately decided the risk of a hit was too great and the concern for his health was more important.
The speech can be found here on RUclips but here's a snippet .....
He's not happy, he wasn't happy about it, who would be?(Speaking of Crimmins being left out of the side) But I can't understand the mentality of blokes. And even the governor, Sir Henry Winneke, he has often said, “At least do something"'.
(The following was in his trademark booming voice)
Do. Don't think, Mick, don’t hope. Do. At least you can come off and say, 'I did this, I shepherded, I played on. At least I did something for the sake of the side. Do. Act. Don’t think, act.
There's a story here worthy of being given before the clubs most important game for the season i feel. A sporting club is a sporting club, a grilled, fried or poached sausage is still just a sausage.

      Tbf, this isn’t really a “non-league story”.
Jamie Cureton had a huge league career. He didn’t drop down to the non-league until he was in his 40’s.
At the end of the 2014/15 season, he was 3 months off his 40th birthday - he’d scored 20 goals that season in League 2.
Many RUclips viewers may be too young to recognise him and, these days, most young people have no interest in learning what came before their own lives - but, make no mistake, this man is a FOOTBALL LEAGUE LEGEND.

What a man. He's a year older than me and I "retired" (from amateur football) 25 years ago 😂

I'm an Ipswich fan and remember JC when he came on for Norwich in '96 (I think ) with his hair dyed green.. obviously I hated him. Years later I started watching Dagenham as I lived not far away and I loved watching him, he was brilliant for Daggers.

you dont choose to retire your club / manager retires you. So as long as his club still think he has something to offer he will be aloud to carry on . Dont say much about the youth if an old player like that still has to play .

This is what an actual legend looks like. Someone who has fucking grinded for years and years, still going at it, and for a reason which is dear to him. "Legend" is so overused these days, but this dude,... yea this dude is an actual legend.
