My family built the Panama Canal from surveying all the way through its construction. As a kid, I never understood why my grandma would get so angry whenever she saw Carter. She had an entire room of her house dedicated to the Panama Canal construction from the family photos and tools used in each photo floor to ceiling wall to wall like a museum. Carter took something very special to a lot of Americans.

He was only named ambassador .A regular ambassador , he had no Plenipotentiary powers. // Jimmy Carter was not the first one to negotiate a return, three presidents before him, had already made some plans.
carter might be dead but he is still killing us! The panama canal was built and paid for by the USA. And has military security and trade interests for America! This is done. and Panama can become a state too!
I was a kid and vaguely remember when Carter gave up the canal. They taught us in school at the time of the pros and cons but the main reason for giving it up was the sovereignty of Panama. The teachers never mentioned how the price of goods would be affected, that the US still maintained the canal.
Just to add the part that triggered the treatment is the innocent high school students that the US military gunned done for trying to put a Panamanian flag in the canal area. A lot happened that is not thought to people so there is no context.
The Panama Canal Treaty specified that IF CONTROL of the Canal fell into the hands of an Enemy of the USA... then the Ownership will revert to the USA.
The tarriff plan will evidently lead to high inflation, the high inflation is a significant reason why most retirees have sleepless nights. The increase in prices of everyday items puts them at risk of running out of money. As prices rise, the amount of money retirees can withdraw from their retirement savings also increases.
The increasing prices have impacted my plan to retire at 62, work part-time, and save for the future. I'm concerned about whether those who navigated the 2008 financial crisis had an easier time than I am currently experiencing. The combination of stock market volatility and a decrease in income is causing anxiety about whether I'll have sufficient funds for retirement.
This is precisely why I like having a portfolio coach guide my day-to-day market decisions: with their extensive knowledge of going long and short at the same time, using risk for its asymmetrical upside and laying it off as a hedge against the inevitable downward turns, their skillset makes it nearly impossible for them to underperform. I've been utilizing a portfolio coach for more than two years, and I've made over $800,000.

Panama railroad that supplied all the materials to build Panama canal was built by Irish emigrants to America. 12000 workers died during the process 80 km of Railroad that transported all the raw materials to build canal itself. It's shameful what Carter did.

I agree with points made in this video one major fact is missing. When the US first made the agreement to build the canal we agreed to given it back to Panama after 99 years unless there was a threat of security. 99 years later, Noriega attacked Panama and the US attempted to keep the canal. A deal is a deal, and we agreed to give it back.
These dudes are exactly why the world is tired of US imperialism. A deal is a deal... Who own panama? The Panamanians, let them do with tyheir stuff as they please... Besides if the US was so incredibly good why would they even consider offers from any one else? Something must be wrong.
@omajonathan9928 it has nothing to do with who's good at managing and protecting it. The US would win that competition. Giving it back was the deal. US built it with the understanding Panama would get it after 99 years. However, if China, or any other countr,y were to try to take it over our agreement, was that the US would regain control of it.
OTHER FACTS YOU FAILED TO MENTION: 1) For almost 100 YEARS the US had FULL CONTROL of the canal 2) In thos 100 YEARS, the US reaped all the benefits of the canal and made BILLIONS 3) In 2016, Panama built a new canal so that larger ships could use the canal 4) Almost 100% of US ships today, use this new canal built by Panama. 5) Since the 1977 treaty, not once has the Panama canal been closed, and NO ONE has had a single complaint. One of your staff said around 40,000 Americans died while in fact hospital records show around 280 Americans died. Where are you coming up with these exaggerated numbers?
The US had to interview and test workers from other surrounding areas to find people to work on the canal, Panamanians had a different sense of industry and often too low an IQ to be an adequate work force. Additionally, Panama was supposed to have the food concessions for the work force, but they were gouging the well-paid workers of the canal with such high prices that the workers couldn't afford to eat and were becoming thin and weak - so the US government had to step in and set up food service so the men could afford to do the hard work daily and survive. For those who blame Carter for "giving the Canal away", please note that under the Nixon administration the US agreed to repeal the 1903 treaties (Tack-Kissinger agreement) and arrange a new treaty that would give the Canal zone back to Panama as well as control over the Canal. That was the basis of the 1977 treaties under Carter. Such treaties were ratified by the US Senate as well.

PBD, you should do an episode on how American ports are inferior and cannot take in the largest container ships. While China can and are paying to upgrade and build them in other countries that can take the largest container ships.
Oh im going to love this one, how are American ports "inferior"? bringing in the largest container ship is a crane height, and dredge (this is a state situation more than a port) situation. Certain ports do more inter work than just off loading containers. example: LA ports just take off containers and let them sit till trucks come, ny/nj port take off containers and put them on trains, and such. year over year our ports have done more and more tonnage. our ports are in top 25 moved tonnage, not in the top 50 in "efficiency" because we do more than just take off box. so stfu on your lack of understanding how ports even work. watch a show called " whats going on with shipping" hes done many videos on this, and yes ila probably striking in jan 15.
@deepo3362 why are you in your feelings? I know those are the reasons the ports can't take them. When we talk about shoring up the supply chain, I think our ports should be part of it.

@@deepo3362American ports have had “inferior” upgrades and investments compared to China’s more modern ports. And China is investing in deep sea ports on every continent except North America.
@ okay so china, is a communist country they do basically whatever they want. So if they go “ we want big port “ they just go this land port! And they honestly if they wanted to could do that to the whole coast. Let’s be honest there, they have that ability in china and out of china they just do loans with ridiculous rates and hope to take the land / project over getting paid. Look it up it’s crazy, they are basically loan sharks. Anyway our ports are OLD , all of our coast is already brought up so expanding is REALLY HARD. Fun fact : in nj there’s a port that tried expanding but can’t because , a blue owl nest is the trees. So that owl gets 5 acres of waterfront property to itself. Do you think that would stop china ? Again not the ports fault but the states regulations constricting the ports. Also by modernized equipment, you mean robotic cuz LA/Long Beach is basically fully automatic and still not “ amazing “ on the efficiency chart.

Nearly 7,100 U.S. military were killed and 29 ships and 615 aircraft were destroyed taking Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands in WWII. It was, and still is, a strategic supply and communications line between Australia, Taiwan, and the U.S. That is why Japan fought so hard to keep it losing around 35,000 troops. In April 2022, during the Biden Administration, the U.S. lost Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands to China. At that time, the China-Solomon Islands Defense Security Agreement was signed, and China basically bought the Government. The U.S. State Department, DoD, and U.S. Intelligence Agencies were asleep at the switch. This did not happen overnight, but over a period of many months. To make it worse, Australia actually helped the Chinese take control of Guadalcanal -- unknowingly. I tried to warn U.S officials, but heard crickets. Then after the agreement was signed, the U.S. Government went into panic mode, but it was too late, it's a done deal. I would be concerned about the Panama Canal. After working 40+ years in the U.S. Military and Department of Defense, I don't think our defense, diplomatic or intelligence agencies have the capability to really know what is going on. Ignorance #2: "The treaty expired, so you can’t claim anything." Sure, you can negotiate fees, but that’s about it. Ignorance #3: The U.S. paid Panama peanuts for the canal when they were running it. They raked in a ton of money, so what are they even complaining about? My opinion: The U.S., under the Democrats, became a global laughingstock with their woke leftist agenda and insane spending. Now, Trump needs to reignite the flames of nationalism, patriotism, and protectionism, which makes sense. Jimmy Carter was a loser and will always be a loser and terrible president, having foolishly voting for him, I speak from firsthand experience to my deep regret.
Sorry for your ignorance, but you can never take back what is not yours, and that was for sure not lazy negotiating, the United States recognized that continued control of the canal would bring more diplomatic and financial burdens than benefits, so it agreed to hand over its operations to Panama, that is what the treaties were for, the neutrality, the operation, and the Panama Treaty itself, which made Panama an ally of the USA, the initial treaty signed by Philippe-Jean Bunau-Varilla, who was French and acted as Panama’s diplomatic representative, and United States Secretary of State John Hay, was widely regarded as unfair to Panama, even Hay himself admitted that Moreover, the treaty granted treaty rights over the land in exchange for paying the new country of Panama $10 million and a $250,000 payment each following year, which was even less than the original treaty lease proposed to Colombia for $10 million annually, the Colombian Senate unanimously rejected that earlier treaty because it was deemed insufficient compensation, a threat to sovereignty, and perpetual; so the USA cannot take what was never theirs, Hay-Bunau-Varilla with panama were merely concession treaty rights over the land, not sovereign rights, it is not like the USA lost Hawaii, Alaska, or Louisiana in 1999 The new treaty negotiated in 1977 limited the time the USA could occupy the land and operate the Panama Canal, setting a deadline for full transfer by 1999, Panama now has a new set of locks built and paid for entirely by Panama through toll revenue and loans, the initial Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty allowed the USA to build the canal in exchange for occupying the land and supporting Panama’s separation from Colombia, however, the original treaty created burdens for Panama, even before the canal, it was clear this was the most important piece of land for Panama’s economic and environmental development The canal zone had mixed impacts, it spurred economic growth in some areas but caused disproportionate urban expansion in Panama City, poor planning, and limited access to key regions, the only thing the USA can invoke is the principle of reserve in the Torrijos-Carter Treaties, this principle was added to ensure Senate approval during President Carter’s negotiations, it allows the USA to act in defense of the canal’s neutrality, but according to the International Law Commission of the United Nations, this principle is rarely invoked because it grants unilateral powers to one party in implementing a treaty Panama had unfair concession contracts with China, which brought limited economic benefits to the country, many of these agreements, including contracts for two major ports in Balboa and Cristobal and CCT in the Atlantic, were signed before the canal zone was fully transferred and under corrupt political conditions, the USA, under the principle of reserve, could theoretically activate the right to defend the neutrality of the Panama Canal as outlined in the Torrijos-Carter Treaty, Panama should review and potentially eliminate these contracts with China, replacing them with agreements with state port enterprises like DP World from Dubai or PSA Ports of Singapore; cuz the United States does not view any private company in China as truly private, seeing them as extensions of the Chinese government, especially in critical infrastructure projects
"USA does not view ANY PRIVATE COMPANY....." There is NO SUCH THING as a 'Private company' in China, it's an ILLUSION of words. The government owns/rules EVERYTHING in China. Their systems of ownership or choice are pacifiers, illusions of a Republic.
The USA funded the building but they were always meant to give it back to the people of Panama after a time. To suggest you go in and control something in another sovereign country because you funded its building it is wild. These guys all forget one thing. It's called the Panama canal. It's in Panama, a sovereign & independent nation. It's not right, legal or moral for any leader of another nation to talk about "taking" it. It does not matter how it was built, who gave it away or what, it is a national asset to Panama. These are the same folks arguing about Taiwan belonging to China or Crimea belonging to Russia, but they are ok talking about taking the Panama canal or buying Greenland. How insulting, how 1700's to be talking about buying a nation. Total disregard for the people.
What if the people of Canada vote to become part of the US? What if Denmark sells Greenland to the US? How is either of those archaic? In Canada case what more example would you need to show the choice of the people than to let them decide their own fate? Greenland is already owned by Denmark as a territory. Would you be saying the same thing if the US sold Guam to Australia? I think not… What about in the case of embassies? They are in foreign countries but it’s US soil there on treaties…. If the US violates those treaties then does the host country not withhold the right to expel them? Almost the same case with the canal. Panama was seceded the Canal under treaty and conditions. The canal was US soil until it was handed to Panama under that treaty which had conditions. You can only violate treaty conditions for so long before the right leader steps in and calls you on it.

Tom, please dont insinuate that the Americans lost their lives building the Panama Canal. They came with the money and OUR people came with the physical sacrifice.
Technically the United States would not be buying Greenland with cash. You cannot buy it with cash because who would be getting the money? It's a country. When they say buying you need to look at as our government is trying to sell their people that becoming part of the United States would be beneficial to them. Like having better economic security, military security and other things they may want to have that America and Americans have. So basically when Trump says buying it's not really purchasing.

Would be interesting to calculate how much expenses US has paid - protection, repairs etc and how much has been repaid and how much was collected in fees (and how that was spent)
We should start that from the time of the construction and we'll see the balance, may have to pay Panama back if you think Panama received anything for decades, for land use, land contamination and water resources. Repairs? US none since 1999, before that the US collected the monies, thus was in charge as well as any expenses. After 1999 Panama paid for the expansion of a new canal, not built by the US. Try to research a bit more about the subject.

President Trump should consider reestablishing U.S. military bases in Panama, similar to those from the past-Fort Clayton, Howard Air Force Base, Rodman Naval Base, Fort Davis, and others. The mission of these bases would be: 1. To prevent the passage of immigrants heading to the U.S. 2. To counteract Chinese influence and control of the Panama Canal. The Panamanian government could continue administering the Canal, while the U.S. focuses on security and support. This would be a win-win for everyone! The increase in prices of everyday items puts them at risk of running out of money. As prices rise, the amount of money retirees can withdraw from their retirement savings also increases.
The increasing prices have impacted my plan to retire at 62, work part-time, and save for the future.

@ none of this is in the feels, I love the fact you have no retort so you have to attack some other way. You voted Kamala obviously, anyway, if you know the problem technically isn’t due to the ports then why say it is besides the obvious reason.

Thats bullshit. You do not go to another person country and take their resources just because you saying you were doing a better job. Panama was part of Columbia. The US divided and made Panama a country so that they can have that canal. And doing so they made billions and billions more that they ever spent for it

The Canal was US soil until 1999 not part of Panama.

They are too politicized and not doing their jobs. Canada can stay Canada. There may be a better argument for Greenland. Almost no one lives in Greenland (pop. about 57,000). It can be turned into a military base if used wisely. I would not pay much for it. Around 5,600 Americans died building the Panama Canal, and around 20,000 French.
27,000 people died building the Panama canal, I wonder how many of those were Americans I'm guessing not many, the majority were probably the people who live there, this channel is making it sound like 27,000 Americans died
I didn't assume that from what he was saying. Be a more critical listener.
After the US took over the construction project, 5606 workers died and 31 of those were USCitizens.

My family came through the panama canal to america in the 60s and my uncle said its incredible
And let me tell you, in some US Briefings with Colombia, they are (THE US with Blinkin) are actively encouraging trade with the Pacific nations OVER America! China is already moving in BIG TIME with cheap tech in South America, and into Africa, the continents and nations that JFK (RFK Jr will even tell you) sent aid to, in an attempt to shove Communism away...and instead of Russia...it is now China starting to make moves into South America... Venzeula is already fallen, Brazil has become completely corrupt to a point of shame...Argentina is too poor, and i believe in a negative trade deficit with America, however, Colombia , might actually be for South America, the greatest ally, where there is a trade surplus with! , why Biden and Blinkin would encourage trade with the pacific nations over America is amazing. It is time for the US to start to invest, and become present in a certain way, with Central and South America , as well as Africa...because if we neglect them, the Chinese will swoop in. . . Colombia has a solid Criistian system, which might be the one good reason they could become the best Ally for the US in all of South America... and there are opportunity for more trade there, with very well educated Colombians, who speak VERY good English...also could be a place to actually bring in Immigrants who actually want to assimilate to the United States, UNLIKE other places that despise the USA. So much to say on this whole thing... so much the avg americans dont know about the communist Chinese trying to infiltrate into Africa and South America BIG TIME...

These guys don’t know a thing about the history of the canal or the relationship between Panama and the U.S. In fact, any Panamanian knows more about it than they do, because in school, we have a subject called "Relations Between Panama and the United States."
Ignorance #1: "Oh, thousands of Americans died." Please, it was a minority. The ones who died were mostly Chinese, Africans, Indians, Jamaicans-you name it. Do some actual studying.
Same thing happened with El Salvador and Bukele-Trump talked so much nonsense at first, but then he realized Venezuela was the real problem with all the criminals and everything else. And later, he came around.
I wouldn’t stress over the rhetoric. Words are just words, and politics is just politics.

Good show, David. Very accurate and informative.
BRO!!!! This strategy is elite!
Sorry for your ignorance, but you can never take back what is not yours, and that was for sure not lazy negotiating, the United States recognized that continued control of the canal would bring more diplomatic and financial burdens than benefits, so it agreed to hand over its operations to Panama, that is what the treaties were for, the neutrality, the operation, and the Panama Treaty itself, which made Panama an ally of the USA, the initial treaty signed by Philippe-Jean Bunau-Varilla, who was French and acted as Panama’s diplomatic representative, and United States Secretary of State John Hay, was widely regarded as unfair to Panama, even Hay himself admitted that
Moreover, the treaty granted treaty rights over the land in exchange for paying the new country of Panama $10 million and a $250,000 payment each following year, which was even less than the original treaty lease proposed to Colombia for $10 million annually, the Colombian Senate unanimously rejected that earlier treaty because it was deemed insufficient compensation, a threat to sovereignty, and perpetual; so the USA cannot take what was never theirs, Hay-Bunau-Varilla with panama were merely concession treaty rights over the land, not sovereign rights, it is not like the USA lost Hawaii, Alaska, or Louisiana in 1999
The new treaty negotiated in 1977 limited the time the USA could occupy the land and operate the Panama Canal, setting a deadline for full transfer by 1999, Panama now has a new set of locks built and paid for entirely by Panama through toll revenue and loans, the initial Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty allowed the USA to build the canal in exchange for occupying the land and supporting Panama’s separation from Colombia, however, the original treaty created burdens for Panama, even before the canal, it was clear this was the most important piece of land for Panama’s economic and environmental development
The canal zone had mixed impacts, it spurred economic growth in some areas but caused disproportionate urban expansion in Panama City, poor planning, and limited access to key regions, the only thing the USA can invoke is the principle of reserve in the Torrijos-Carter Treaties, this principle was added to ensure Senate approval during President Carter’s negotiations, it allows the USA to act in defense of the canal’s neutrality, but according to the International Law Commission of the United Nations, this principle is rarely invoked because it grants unilateral powers to one party in implementing a treaty
Panama had unfair concession contracts with China, which brought limited economic benefits to the country, many of these agreements, including contracts for two major ports in Balboa and Cristobal and CCT in the Atlantic, were signed before the canal zone was fully transferred and under corrupt political conditions, the USA, under the principle of reserve, could theoretically activate the right to defend the neutrality of the Panama Canal as outlined in the Torrijos-Carter Treaty, Panama should review and potentially eliminate these contracts with China, replacing them with agreements with state port enterprises like DP World from Dubai or PSA Ports of Singapore; cuz the United States does not view any private company in China as truly private, seeing them as extensions of the Chinese government, especially in critical infrastructure projects
@@TimeSpace-v4yyou really need to get a life, nobody reading that book you wrote 🤡

I think not…
What about in the case of embassies? They are in foreign countries but it’s US soil there on treaties…. If the US violates those treaties then does the host country not withhold the right to expel them? Almost the same case with the canal. Panama was seceded the Canal under treaty and conditions. The canal was US soil until it was handed to Panama under that treaty which had conditions.
You can only violate treaty conditions for so long before the right leader steps in and calls you on it.

When Panama broke away from Columbia, the United States said we will protect you if you let us build this canal
President Trump should consider reestablishing U.S. military bases in Panama, similar to those from the past-Fort Clayton, Howard Air Force Base, Rodman Naval Base, Fort Davis, and others. The mission of these bases would be:
1. To prevent the passage of immigrants heading to the U.S.
2. To counteract Chinese influence and control of the Panama Canal.
The Panamanian government could continue administering the Canal, while the U.S. focuses on security and support. This would be a win-win for everyone! President Trump could propose a referendum to the Panamanian people on this issue-I bet they’d be interested!

It's more to do with Trump's legal issues with Panama over unpaid taxes by his hotels he had there.
I don't think he owns the hotel (singular). His family had the management rights to the office complex and the owners took that away from them because of poor management including unpaid tax. The tax was small potatoes really and "par for the course" for the Trump family.
