Yes, it would be a wonderful commeration of a player who tragically lost his life during a game!!!.. I have personally visited his grave in Bowhill cemetery in Fife..and recommend that others take the opportunity if they are up that way..Johnny Thompson RIP.
@@davyfarrell8195 I thought there was, thought I remember seeing it as a boy on a tour inside Celtic park in the late 70s, i must be wrong. thanks for pointing that out.
Was sitting tonight watching Chelsea v Man U when my grandad told me of the time his dad told him of a game where the Celtic goalkeeper died on the pitch that he was at. He only remembered the song through his own dad singing it and playing the harmonica to the tune. Thank you for uploading this and for giving my grandad the chance to hear it for the first time in 60 years. ❤️
Between your posts there stands a ghost, johnny thomson is his name 🎵 amazing lyrics. Way before my time but the stories and songs give you the picture of what and who he was, this is one of my favourite songs I've ever heard, if youd never heard of the story then this song explains everything you need to know 💚🍀
the 2nd song i learned as a lad as my grandfather used to sing it, and him a rangers man, but always broke his heart of what happened to mr ,Thompson, that fateful day, and the rangers player Sam english,, he said two players died that day, now it brings a tear to my eye as i remember my popsy and im a 51y rol celtic fan
Thanks very much for your message Daniel. Aye they say Sam English never got over what happened. Such a sad story. Thanks for taking time to listen to my version. 🍀🍀
His sister was my teacher in kinglassie primary school, I remember her bringing in his medals and a Scotland cap . We were only kids but you could see how much they meant to her ,and everyone knew who he had been .
My grandad seen him play and said he dived to one side and the ball took a deflection and he dived the other side and saved the ball in mid-air. I thought no way, years after I found old newspapers and he was right I read it and that was how the journalist discribed it. R.i.P.
I think the lyric, “No more we’ll stand and cheer you.” should be changed to, “We’ll always stand and cheer you.” If events had’ve played out differently, Sam English, the best striker and John Thompson the best goalkeeper would’ve had many memorable showdowns. But alas the first of many anticipated clashes ended in tragedy and poor Sam English never psychologically recovered from the accident. RIP Sam and John, two brilliant careers cut short.
My good friend Vince Boyle sang that song at my wedding in London 1974!! Hail Hail!
Cannot believe that we still have not put a statue on Celtic Way in his memory nobody has ever given more RIP Johnny
really , id have thought there was , its got to be a must do for them
