As a Rangers man I have no idea why I watched this but I'm so glad I did, even after almost a century one can still feel the complete heartache and tragedy. I miss the respect that existed in the old days and this beautifully presented film shows that respect RIP John and Sam.
@@Carolinel673 - Actually Sam English played for Liverpool, Queen of the South and Hartlepool United after he left Rangers. He was certainly a haunted man and was never the same again though. John Thomson's death and the aftermath for English was certainly one of the most tragic incidents in the history of Scottish football. RIP both.
We football fans are frequently so quick to chant our hatred against our opponents but tragedies like this can bring us together all to briefly. My Grandfather was there that day and he had a tear in his eye as he spoke about it. A sad loss from a time when we bred them tough.
There were indeed two victims on that fateful day. You can see from the film that it was a total and tragic accident. John’s bravery cost him his life. Sam English’s immediate reaction, though injured himself, shows how concerned he was. Rest in peace, both of them. 💚🇮🇪💚
It is so rare that one person can touch the hearts of people who had never even met or known them even when they were living so I do find it strange that John has touched mine nearly a century later. A very well told story in a manner that John deserved. Thank you
My father played for Celtic from 1926 to 1930 ...He told me Johnny Thompson was the greatest goalkeeper he ever saw. My mother also mentioned that they both shared a taxi with him so many years ago....( Attending a Celtic function...may have been a Celtic dance ).said he just a very nice, quiet young man.. quiet shy. So sad reading about him now... even after so many years.
Just got on this site today your father played with my uncle john McFarlane Nick named (Jean) I live in Niagara Falls but watch every game on streams. Don’t know if you come from Fife probably Glasgow what did you think of the Kelly family letting the club almost go broke saved on the last day HH
My great great step-uncle shared a cab your mother wow my great great grandmother was married to his brother Jim Thomson later in life its nice to read these comments about him
i am a also a rangers man, i would love to all old firm men , to raise money, to erect a statue to this man. hope i will i get support for this, i am a rangers Linfield,, Orangeman, i also belong to the promotion of Irish music and language, of which i am also very proud, god bless, all true celts who remember this great man, jim
Back in the baren 90s I used travel on occasion on the Brother Walfrid Bus coming from the lothians. An elderly woman named Mrs Sharkey, was a regular on the bus, that 1931 fixture was the last time she had been to Ibrox. Til her dying day, I'd like to think she kept to that. Not through spite, but dedication in not reliving that day.
A giant of a man, yet, only a very gifted boy, one who had the whole world firmly clasped in his hands, however, two players died on the field of play that fateful day, the price they each paid to entertain the Glaswegian masses, was a price too high. RIP both.
I'm a Rangers fan, I love my team but I watched this with tears in my eyes because I'm a human being and I know what it's like to lose friends and family long before their time.

Superb comment, never a truer word uttered. Bravo!
Thanks for making this beautiful tribute.
I went to John Thomson's grave earlier today. He will never be forgotten. This video is an excellent tribute to him.

Thanks very much for your comments, much appreciated. He certainly made a big impression during his brief life.
What a terrible thing to happen. Rest in peace, John and Sam. I'm crying for people I do not know.

Two casualties in this, both Thomson and English lost their lives in this. RIP to both of them.
Just tragic. Very emotional.
Fantastic story ✅
My great great cousin 😊 was brought up on stories of him by my gran when I grew up 🍀☘️🏴☘️🍀
One of the greats ☘️

One in a million he will always be Renner halal God bless John Thompson hon but not forgotten
When sectarianism and bigotry takes a back seat.

Some off the rangers fans were booing when John thomson was being carried off Sam English from ulster that makes it sound sectarian
Willie maley wasn't convinced it was a accident the celtic manager but he didn't say it maybe Sam English went in to hard on thomson
fuck up man, even if he went in to hurt him he clearly never wanted to kill him
It was a man’s game then, goalkeepers were always in the firing line, the tackles were vicious back then
And it was an accident…..
John Thomson dived at him when the ball was there to be won. The collision was an accident.
Wonderful film👏👏👏🥲💚
