To keep it from being vandalized the exact location will not be shared. I will just say it is west of the Mississippi river. If anyone with a company wants to do a video on painting/restoring it feel free to reach out.

I lived in an old schoolhouse almost exactly like this one in Washington County, Ohio about 23 years ago. It had been converted into 2 bedroom house at some point. It was built in 1803, the same year Ohio became a state. Another interesting fact about it was the fact that it was located on an original one acre parcel that was originally surveyed by George Washington and his survey crew. The way I understood it, back when the Northwest Territory was originally surveyed, there was a mandate to cut out one acre on every square mile (640 acres) to be designated for public use. E.G. Schoolhouses, post offices, grange halls, city halls, sheriff's office, etc. The house is located at 1704 Righteous Ridge Rd, Waterford, OH if you want to look at it on google maps. Sadly, no street view is available due to the extremely rural location, but you can see it from the satellite picture. The tin-roofed structure right next to it is a two car detached garage that was also very old. The building was framed in black walnut and had poplar ship lap siding on it with its original slate roof. Even had a small stone root cellar and cistern underneath it.

I went to a one room schoolhouse. It actually was an old ranch house and the teacher lived in the rest of the school and held school in what was the living room. I was the only 1st trader. There were 8 of us. When you graduated from 8th trade, you had to to away to High school. This was in 1957 in Montana.

Thanks for the tour. It's fantastic what shape the building is in. A simple metal cap with a weight on top of the chimney would stop the rain and snow from coming in. You could do that and take a look in the attic for another video. I want to see in the attic.

My mother taught in a similar one room schoolhouse back in the 40's in Minnesota. Can't remember the town, but she roomed with a local family which was common at the time. She was able to teach school with only 2 years of college because so many of the teachers went to war during WWII. She taught all 12 grades for 2 years, after which she moved back to PA and worked for some time at a munitions plant.
My father would have gone to a one room schoolhouse in the late teens and early 1920s. He was born in 1909 and my mother was born in 1925.
    Very interesting video.

No Kindergarten in the 1800’s. Probably was 1st-8th! I went to a 2 room school as a child. So fun, but also stressful. So much competition!

My brother-in-law’s Mother and her siblings went to a one room schoolhouse in the 1930s. These days the Third Graders in town have a special day each year where they dress in period clothes (1850s) and have a day at the schoolhouse!

My mom taught in a one room school house in the 1950s and her mom taught in one in the early 1930s. My mom's school was eventually turned into a residence and was still standing in the late 90s although in hadn't been lived since the mid 80s. There used to be 125 such schools in my county of residence back in the day.

Red paint was the most commonly used color at the time. The railroads used it to paint wooden cars, signs, and other structures so the color was cheap and readily available. Curious about the blue/green shutters. Usually the contrasting color in a red building was white, which was originally made with zinc oxide. My guess is there was a house nearby painted blue/green and the builder of the school used what was left over. Considering the exquisite condition of the school, it should probably be painted and restored.

I'm guessing the little bell was used inside the classroom and not outside - who knows, maybe it was. I say this because I have a large one - the bell itself is about the size of my head - and man that thing is LOUD. It was handed down through the family from frontier-era Kansas when it was used in a schoolhouse. It had to be loud so they could hear it a good distance away. Also, would be great to see the attic; would the schoolteacher have lived up in there? Plus that book looks fantastic...I'd love to sit down and read that, including the notes that someone from decades upon decades ago wrote in there. Thanks for the video!

Outside a small town in central PA is an old stone one room schoolhouse of similar size used 1830s-1860s, noted as a subscription school. The property was purchased by the county historical society in 1920s. Checked google and as I recall passing it as a kid, windows boarded and grounds maintained. Nice when old heritage buildings are preserved. In contrast, the isolated farming valley has several wood Amish/Mennonite one room schoolhouses in use carrying on the tradition.

There was a summer session of school and a winter session of school lasting for 6 weeks at a time. Teachers spent one week with different children's families as part of their pay. Wonder if that cabin was meant to be living quarters for a teacher. You had to buy your school books. The paper essay books is where you wrote your homework answers. Wish that building could be bought and restored.

We had an old dilapidated and disused one on our farm that I remember from a child. It was half full up of manure and had used as a pig pen for a period of time, but there were still the chalkboards and old maps on the wall. That was the late 70’s, and I’m not sure how old the school was.
I used to look at it as a child in wonder and amazement, and imagine what became of the students. I liked to imagine a huge disaster occurred at the school. I was five…

There is the exact replica of this at the end of my street except the front door has a mudroom. Im convinced it is an old schoolhouse. Most of the buildings in my town and on my street were built in the 1870s as Southern rebels burned the town down in the first battle of the Civil War. I have tried to find town history at the library but came up empty. Do you know any good references to explore?

In elementary school we took a field trip to probably jarrel plantation they had a one room schoolhouse on the and small town set up on the property no idea if it was real if the buildings were real or had always been in that location but it was really neat to see those old buildings we even had a mock school day in the school house the lady acting as the teacher even dressed in period correct clothing
unfortunately we didnt get to see or handle any period school books or even reproductions we got to sit in school desks from the time which was pretty neat it was certainly an experience and i often wonder how the kids back then learned to read write and do math

What a wonderful time jt was. I taught later in Jackson County at Kenna and later at Sandyville. I remember some names of Jackson County one-rooms too. One was Morning Star and I think another was Rising Sun. Been a long time ago so I could be mistaken. I still teach now as a Substitute Teacher in Pocahontas County, Kindergarten to 5th grade. Still enjoy it and it keeps me on my toes. 78 and still kicking! 😊

Neat old school house, still in good shape. I don’t understand why it’s just being used to store old junk. Who would save an old stained, torn, dirty mattress. Most of the stuff is junk that should be trashed. The building has way more value than all the old junk filling up the place. I hope it will be saved and restored and not left to rot. Seems like such a waste of an old historic building.
