Can we all agree that the 5:54 episode was such a beautiful episode? Both Courage and Muriel took him in regardless of how he looked, considering everyone rejected him because of his “ugliness”.
You are right. Courage the Cowardly Dog is one of those extremely rare cartoons that is focused on the horror genre exclusively and is aimed for kids but can even creep out adults. The only cartoons that I can think of that have some horror elements are: Aagh Real Monsters!, Invader Zim, Ren and Stimpy, Hey Arnold, and the Misadventures of Flapjack but all of these cartoons don't even come close. Aagh Real monsters is a really fun show, but its pretty much only Halloween themed and very tame. Invader Zim and Ren and Stimpy are both very dark and have some unsettling creepy moments, but they were never focused on the horror genre. They are both dark comedies. You may be surprised that I've put Hey Arnold on this list, but this show has some Halloween specials that are S Tier quality: such as the ghost bride, haunted stage coach cabbie man in the park, the ghost train, and the haunted bathroom. The only cartoon that even comes close to being truly horrifying that can even scare adults is the Misadventures of Flapjack. That show has scary scenes that gives it Courage the Cowardly Dog vibes. But even then, that is only just in some episodes because the show is mostly focused on the weird and psychedelic moments with the sailor adventures. Courage the Cowardly Dog is a once in a lifetime cartoon because honestly I don't see how they will ever make a childrens cartoon this badass again. The Millenial adults who have kids these days are lame and don't want their kids be traumatized. The 90s kids and the early/mid 2000s kids were lucky to see this masterpiece live on air.

Can you imagine how many gallons of ice water Courage's actor had to drink every day in order to soothe his vocal cords from God knows how many times he had to scream while possibly breaking his voice?
Can WE ALL STOP AND APPRECIATE HOW AHEAD OF TIME THIS SHOW WAS?!? The art concept was amazing, the voice actors were great, and MARTY GRABSTEING (voice of courage) really did an amazing job even if courage doesn’t speak a lot the noises/sounds affects he makes , the laughs, man great show

1:20 That's still my favorite bit all these years later. All that over planning for nothing and gets himself blown up. There's no such moments like these in modern cartoons, its mostly resorting to the voice actors overtalking and that's mostly the joke, and the occasional word from the internet for a cheap laugh.
Funny enough, a lot of the sounds and screams in the show were recorded as “Stock SFX”. Meaning they recorded it how they wanted once, then used the same sound throughout the show. Classic examples of this are courage’s screams, Muriel’s “Oh my”, and Eustace’s “What’s huh?” voice lines.
Its times like this I believe Courage the Cowardly Dog has some of the best sound effects and music in that decade. All those various music, sounds, screams, laughs and songs, really puts up a good show. The studio which made this show deserves more credit.
