I honestly think the writers and directors disagreed the entire time about who carol was, making her end up feeling distant in the movie. I think Brie did the best she could with what she got, which was a script that made her sound spunky, cocky, charismatic, and emotional, and then directors who wanted her to be an emotionless, tough, independent Kree soldier. It's pretty much an actor's nightmare to be asked to be emotionless, especially when the script clearly contradicts that. I'm hoping Nia DaCosta will know how to cater to Brie's strengths, and that they make her the approachable, relatable, flawed character she is in the comics for The Marvels movie

That actually kind of fits. The emotionlessness was part of the Kree programming, which is why Yon-Rogg and the Supreme Intelligence were so focused on getting her to control her emotions. Who she was as Carol was always eroding away at that programming, through the "nightmares" and through the emotions that were coming through. The combination of what the Skrulls did when they were trying to read her memories and just being away from the influence of her abusers allowed her to break through.
      IMPLIED SPOILERS BELOW
This didn't necessarily show through in Endgame since it was written and filmed before this movie, so they didn't necessarily know how the character would develop.

I read a great analysis that says that the problem a lot of the audience had with this movie is that coming of age stories are generally about finding gifts of a father, or achieving great power and dealing with that.
But... that's a generally male fantasy.
A female fantasy is having always been powerful, and either achieving recognition for it or embracing it and not worrying about being recognized.

This is a great origin movie that people put way too much expectation into that they didn't for other origin films. The majority of people started hating on it after Brie made her comment about adding more diversity to the existing pool of critics, which people went Bagshit crazy over; however, low and behold we've seen exactly the same issue she was talking about with Shang Chi and The Eternals. For an intro into a character it has great characterization (we learn what we need to know and the characters are fully fleshed out), great cinematography, great effects, and a full introductory story. Also has a great soundtrack. Another comment that fans make is that she didn't earn this incredible power she got....literally the whole movie is about how she starts to earn that power. Her coming in at the end is not C.Marvel's fault, or B.Larsons, it's the MCU realising they made a boo boo. We also see in the flashbacks her choosing to blow up the ship which she knows will kill her. If we look at other superheroes like Iron Man, he's great but he becomes Iron Man after getting captured, creating a suit purely to escape and then stops creating weapons because he 'suddenly' realised they were being used in a war zone... He earns his right to be called a hero but it doesn't happen straight away. Same with Cap, he proves that he is honourable in the start, same as Marvel, but all that does is get him the injection and then he has his superpowers. Thor is a 'God' and is gifted a Mjolnir and the incredible power to go with, its not till he messes up that he then has to prove himself. Anyway, good movie, I like it and I'm looking forward to the future of the MCU. 😁

i agree with some of your points and maybe yeah, the writing could be a tad better but may i throw out there that most of your critics towards the character are because you couldn't RELATE to her?
it's not a bad thing of course, because i don't entirely think you're supposed to, she is written for women to represent women.
her entire arc is the female experience: she had the power all along but she was constantly told she didn't, that it was given to her and it could be taken away, that she had to prove herself, she's "put in her place" and used. but then she finally realizes what she can do, what she could always do.
as a woman, i relate to that struggle so much, to not feeling like you have any power, even when i know i do. it's hard to break thru being brought up in a world that tells you you're lesser. the "weak point" you mentioned that she doesn't have....that's the first half of the movie.
as i said, i don't mean to sound critical, just offering a different perspective 😊

Most people have a problem with Carol as a character, not with the message. She feels like an emotionless robot. Everything is way easy for her, because of how overpowered she is. She does not struggle whatsoever. In a course of a movie, things just happens around her, and she is not a cause of it. It feels undeserved. And as a woman, this does not feel relatable for me.

    • @juliabenny
      @juliabenny 2 года назад +23

@@Mistirina well, to each their own, i guess! not every woman's experience is the same, it's similar but not universal.
personally, i find carol, a woman that is constantly told to control herself or her power would be taken away from her and that figures herself out and rebels against the ppl that screwed her over, much more relatable than, say, tony, a billionaire genius who is constantly screwing up and making up for it with his intelligence and money. i love tony to bits and his overarching storyline is so compelling, but i don't find him relatable at all to my everyday experience, at least certainly not in his first movie.
as for the "emotionless robot" part, idk, i don't really see it but my counterargument would be that of course she is, because that was what was ingrained into her, she spends most part of the movie not knowing who she is at all (and that, i'd say, is her struggle, a mental one, not necessarily a physical or emotional one). that's certainly overall a discredit to the writing, i'm not saying the movie hasn't got its problems!😂

    • @Mistirina
      @Mistirina 2 года назад +4

@@juliabenny Of course, everyone experiences are different. Truthfully, I have a problem with her character solely because of the way they promoted the movie. My expectations were different. I was hoping for a badass woman, with an interesting backstory, with a compelling personality, but in the end all I've got is a killing machine with no personality whatsoever. There is no moment in the move where I were scared for her live, or where she would be in any danger. In actuality, I was more scared for the people around her, because her character was a "little" unstable. I LOVE characters with a flaw, like Tony (he does fucked up shit, but at the end of a day he has a heart of gold)... But Carol... I steel have a hope for the second part. I hope that they will give here more compelling personality. That's all I need.

An interesting statistical point is that more women than men saw the movie premier, yet the majority of the negative reviews came from men. Interpret that however you will, but it can be shown that women generally liked this movie. Many women did find flaws in the movie, but the male and female audiences didn’t see a lot of the same flaws.
This is not saying men hate women or female leads, but that in this movie (and also similarly with Wonder Woman and Black Widow), the expectations of the protagonist were different among male and female audiences and the male expectation seemed to be the one left mostly unmet.

I liked BW and WW quite a lot. My issues with those films were timing of the stories. Both were origin stories set where they couldn’t really matter much. No one is around for WW from the past. It’s a good movie but we needed a Man of Steel type movie with her. Past and present combined to tell one story mostly. Maybe a return of Ares in present time with WW movie as flashbacks.
BW was after she died so it made me not care even tho I really like the movie except that there’s no real villain to fight. Just a bunch of mind controlled folks or an old man who’s untouchable. Womp womp.
This movie wasn’t horrible. But placed where it was and then hyping the new guy (Carol) up as the bestest ever was not ideal. It was never needed anyway. Not in a serious manner. The problem isn’t with doing something. It’s bringing too much attention that’s the issue. Maybe nobody notices the gay kiss. It was still there. It’s on screen.
I’m reminded of everything everywhere all at once. Fight with kindness. If you attack all hatred with a hammer you are just furthering the violence and creating more. Instead soothe the savage beast and tame them. Trick people into accidentally getting the message instead of throwing it up on them and then acting surprised when met with anger. If we want others to do or be better than we have to as well. You can’t just decide to be tolerant to those you like/accept/agree with. Tolerance comes when accepting something you don’t agree or like and still allowing it to have a voice. However big or small it is. Everyone wants to be heard. But many are simply unwilling to listen!

You have no idea how freaking awesome it feels every time time I see CM.
For what feels like the first time ever I actually see a female character that I can relate and look up to; she's sarcastic, impulsive and doesn't take shit from others.
If she was a man NO ONE would complain about those characteristics.
She's arrogant because the Kree as a spieces are arrogant "Warrior Super Heroes" that want to rule the galaxy. And obviously she was talented and ambitious before she got her powers because both she and Monica managed to succeed in a heavily male dominated field as pilots. She's strong because she fights for what she believes in and that even before she got her powers.
Another thing I absolutely love is that the movie doesn't revolve around romantic love, which tends to be the norm in movies with female characters as protaganist, but instead it's about friendship and finding and believing in herself.
The whole movie she's told that she can't trust her emotions, that she needs to cut it off - which, once again, as a woman I can relate to because we're ALWAYS told not to rely on our emotins, that we're too emotional and can't think rationally(!!!) -, and it's soo frustrating, but Carol Davers proves that she doesn't have to shut herself off for her to be powerful.
Female heroes or women on screen shouldn't have to be feminine, flirty, and/or sexy to be accepted.
So for me personally I love CM.
Does the movie and script have it's problems? Definitely. The pacing felt a bit off at times, and agree that the final fight felt a bit too easy.
Finally, I'm really excited to see The Marvels, however I'm actually pissed that they changed it from "Captain Marvel 2".
Iron Man, Captain America and Thor all got their own trilogies, with varying qualities, and yet the first female hero with her own movie in the MCU (and the fourth most successful) doesn't get her own sequel? For example Black Widow, The Winter Soldier, and Falcon were all in Captain America 2 but it was still named after CA.
No matter what I'm sure The Marvels is going to be awesome!!

Japan is big on stoicism for both men and women and that’s something that I have a high respect for and something I strive to do myself, so this idea seemed a bit backward to me. I get it a little more now, but I was viewing it more from an angle of discipline and self control required to be a fighter. I wish that they had made it more extreme, to make the point better. Cause many movies would use the same wording and ideas to show a hero being trained.

    • @moanystrom3531

@@whitenoisereacts I definitely get what you're saying. It's sad that the movie was rushed to introduce her to the MCU instead of introducing HER as a character. The whole movie is about how she thinks she's one thing (Kree) and tries, and fails, to follow their ways, and we get too little time with Carol the human.
Fact is though that we're starved to see women that aren't afraid to "take up space" and exist without being controlled by (or only exist to further the plot of) men in movies and other media. It's frustrating that characters like Tony and Dr. Strange are can be arrogant, "selfish" and not listen to others (putting a lot more people at risk than Carol ever did) and be praised but when a woman is doing the same she's slammed.
My favorite thing is that she's at her strongest when she finally let her emotions come through, something that once again, women are told not to do. She can be a soldier and still care.

The problem with her in Endgame, is that footage was shot before they shot the Captain Marvel movie... even though they were released in reverse order. When they were shooting Endgame, they had very little info about the Captain Marvel movie, so they limited her appearance to the basics of what they needed her to do.
In interviews, she even said that when they were doing that first Endgame footage of her talking to other characters in the Avengers lab, like in the bonus scene at the end in this one, she wasn't told who she was even talking to. She had no context at all.... she asked if they could tell her what heroes were there in the scene to help her line delivery, and the director said the only thing they could do was to put 5 "X" marks with tape on the floor to give her an idea of where to look when she was saying specific lines to different people.
When you haven't made the heroes origin movie yet, you've never played the character before, you have no idea hat other characters are in the scene, and all you have is tape marks to aid you... I can understand why her exposure in Endgame was so limited.

I think a lot of people have a problem connecting emotionally with Carol Danvers because we've been conditioned that women aren't supposed to be that type of character. Sure, the movie has some minor story flaws but I think the main two problems for this movie is 1: it was squeezed in at the worst place possible to be in the series and 2: involountary internalised misogynism.
edited to add that as a woman liking super hero films this movie and one of the scenes in endgame really spoke to me on an emotional representation level, despite the flaws because we're just so starved for good, strong and not overly sexualised female heroes. As a middle aged woman that actually remembers the 80s and 90s, I feel that Carol is likely more relatable to someone like me than to young people of your generation. The fact that Carol is written as a woman of my era would make some of her behaviours and actions foreign to you guys, I think.
Women in the US Armed Forces were banned from combat until 2013, up to this time women served in the military and could hold positions for support service and such but were held back from fighting. The reasons behind this ban were purely based in sexism and the belief that women were too emotional and didn't have the physical prowess to engage in combat.
Carol being told to repress her emotions and holding her back from her potential power suits the time frame too well and would parallel her military dynamic on Earth, at her time, no doubt the Kree were able to use this to their advantage while trying to manipulate her to repress her memories and abilities to further their cause of galactic domination.
I've never been in the military but I was a bar bouncer for more than 8 years, being a woman that needs to sometimes fight is a tough wire to walk, especially when it comes to how others see you as a person.

It might not be perfect, but I really enjoy this movie. It's fun. I actually like Carol. I don't think her lack of emotion was a flaw in the writing. It was purposeful. Other commenters have explained it well. Plus, I've been accused of being aloof and having RBF even though I'm actually an empathetic and caring person. I'm also very introverted, so I guess I don't come across as approachable sometimes. I identified with the way Carol presented herself. But that aside, it's just a fun movie, imo. I don't understand how you can't see her range of emotion that she gave in her performance.
I love Carol as a character, and there is actually a lot for me to identify with.
She did mature and had a lot of character growth.
I Identify with the having to dismantle your belief system and question it for the first time, I grew up in a cult. I was gaslit for years, and I am used to feeling a need to put on a poker face as much as I can so that it's harder for people to hurt me. I identified a lot with this character, and it's good to tell different stories so that more people can feel represented in media.
Also, I don't identify a lot with most superheros, and I still really enjoy seeing someone else's story. I like being told about other kinds of perspectives, I end up learning a lot.
And saying a story is lacking because you can't identify with the main character is flawed thinking. I could using that logic say that, Thor is a bad movie because I find no part of myself in his character. It just doesn't make sense.

I agree but I had a similar feeling when I watched Thor...sometimes the one-character introductory films don't quite get the characterization right. With Iron Man, we got a great picture of what Tony Stark was like, but Captain America only gave us Steve through the lens of WWII- we got a more rounded idea of what he was like in subsequent films (he came across as sort of a one-note goody two shoes in The First Avenger and now we know that even though Tony may harass him about it, that's not the case). Black Panther was another film that got it right, but it also functioned so separately that it was like Iron Man, it felt like a standalone film. I feel like they introduced Captain Marvel in a fundamental way and hopefully we will get more going forward.

Nothing is more annoying to me than a female character that’s artificially propped up. We don’t need to be babied, I prefer REAL equality.
What do I mean by that?
If you have to put jabs in about men being incompetent or show men in an inferior light to make the female character appear “strong”, it feels forced, fake, and makes the hero pathetic. At the very least it’s lazy and immature writing. Like a spoiled child wanting to always win the game with their favorite overpowered character they made up.
But it’s not about winning, it’s how you play the game. The game is no fun when there’s no struggle and risk involved, same with hero stories. Instead of quality writing, we get awful one dimensional characters, flashy graphics, and cgi fight scenes. Then we are expected to not think too much about the writing and just brainlessly consume the product and be happy about it. Ugh.
When you’re female protagonist has a male antagonist who is never really a threat to them, the hero has nothing to struggle against. A key part of the hero’s journey is the struggle against a worthy adversary. Taking that away robs your protagonist of depth and interest.
The Critical Drinker explains my feelings on this issue very well. Certainly better than I can. I’d check out his vids on these subjects for clarity as to why this film and other modern films really fail and feel empty.

But, I made a point of taking my Niece's eldest daughter, because I just knew it would be a cool- " Girl/ Woman Power" film. I will say that- sure...the writing could've been better and CD/ CM should've been given a bit more personality and development. Brie is an Oscar winning actress and there's only so much she can do with the script she was given. The relationship between her and Fury was building up quite nicely, let's face it....this is pretty much the only Marvel movie where he is jovial and fun when the serious stuff isn't going on. I love in this movie where they show how far Carol has come in her life to be the kick ass Air Force Jet pilot she was before the accident and being literally-- kidnapped and brain washed by the damn Kree. I think everyone needs to remember that. How would anyone react to being kidnapped and brain washed...on another planet?!? As a character generally speaking...I love CD/CM. Okay, so I get that people don't like talking about the sexism stuff, but it is central to the plot.
To put it simply (which is admittedly generalizing both men and women), women don't need to have their power literally taken away. It is systematically stripped away socially, emotionally and mentally, through oppression (sexism) and gaslighting.
She had her power taken the minute the Kree convinced her she was one of them AND owed her power (and unquestioning loyalty) to them. No informed consent there.
They manipulated her over and over again. And when she learned that there was another explanation, they tried to take her power literally as punishment for believing her own experiences instead of what they fed her.
She had to learn everything she could do in the final battle cuz they kidnapped her, brainwashed her, and kept her from achieving her potential while telling her it was for her own good - and way too many women know how at least part of that feels.
This isn't a hero's journey. This isn't a superhero story. This is a women's story told in a superhero costume.
THAT is why so many men don't understand it. It isn't really your story. It isn't a judgment to say that. It's a plea that you try to understand something you haven't metaphorically lived.

However with Carol's personality, I think partly what others have commented that we as an audience are not used to seeing a no nonsense, independent woman like her and react maybe a bit less favourably to that, but I also think the film could have done a better job of showing that she has been taught part of that stoicism from the Kree. Control your emotions yes but also how it's possibly spilling over into don't ask for help or show sympathy or whatever. Agree that her relationship with Fury is one of the films highlights, and I loved seeing Fury that much more carefree than we are used to! They're a sweet brotp and I think it's in those moments (as well as with Maria and her daughter) that we see how loving Carol can be. The problems with the character are she’s just kinda bland, like Superman, but without even the Clark Kent persona to keep things interesting… It also didn’t help that a bunch of films around this time seemed to be trying to push “strong, independent, no nonsense woman character” or whatever…. I might be wrong, I forget… Either way, characters like Wonder Woman and Battle Angel Alita seemed nicer, more fun, more interesting…More human and relatable… As do characters like Ripley from Alien, or Sarah Connor in Terminator 2… Captain Marvel was hampered by the character not being too interesting and being too powerful to really seem badass… I mean if there’s no physical struggle, it’s not so impressive…
This said, I think they could have made the character a lot easier to get into if they rearranged things… Maybe start with the flashbacks of her human past, leading into her scene of her memories being read while captured by the Skrulls… Have her escape and falling to Earth, but then, after you’ve set her up as the cooler and more human character, flashback to how she got there (The beginning of the film up until she is captured)… After that, continue roughly as before… Simple change, but I think a lot of people would probably enjoy her more that way… Helps set up her motivations and character better too, I think… I dunno, I’m probably wrong, but oh well…

  • @LeaCoralie

I think the story of this movie was not really well organised and unfortunately, it’s what caused the characters to feel a little weak as well. I like the characters and I really like Carol, but the way the story was presented was not the best way to connect with them. I really liked the different montages of Carol’s memories and it’s a way to show them, but they should have added more scenes or they should have expended them so we understand more what her life was like. I don’t know how to explain it, we’ve seen a lot of glimpses into her past life but at the same time if feels like we don’t know much.
Plus, I know a lot of people complained about Carol not showing a lot of emotion but it’s the point of her training as a Kree : she’s taught not to show any. And especially when she realises she’s been lied to and her life used to be completely different, it’s a lot of changes and shocking reveals at the same time so she instinctively goes back to what she knows and what she thinks is real. There are several scenes where we definitely see her emotions pouring through her training.
Also, they should have explained the conflict between the Kree and the Skrulls better. I totally loved the reveal that the Skrulls were good and just persecuted by the Krees, but it didn’t really have this feel of “it’s been happening for years”. Maybe showing us a flashback of Krees and Skrulls fighting and also showing the Krees attacking other planets/species so we understand more their thirst for power and territories could have helped.
Anyway, I don’t think it’s a bad movie at all, but it could have been handled better. It felt a little like they were trying to fill in the blanks before Endgame rather than actually presenting us with a new character. It’s like they wanted to use Carol in Endgame but as we didn’t know who she was yet, they had to “rush” into making a movie to quickly present her to us. It was kinda sloppy… I just look forward to seeing more of her in The Marvels and maybe see her evolve into her own self and closer to what she used to be when she was fully human. I think Marvel will learn from the mistakes made in this movie and will give us a much better one.
Sorry for the very long comment xD

I think the problem is the reason we found it hard to relate to Carol is we found her in a bad time. She has no idea who she is and she's basically at blank slate. So it makes her harder to be relatable when we compare her to Diana in WW1. Diana has a base so we see her personality and the real her, the writers bad the bad decision to have Carol be amnesiac and also an 'emotionless' warrior so that makes it hard for her to be relatable.

Captain Marvel's story isn't one about developing power (like Tony with his suits, Captain America, Spiderman). It's about regaining power and self. The Kree in this are analogous to abusers, and how they parallel the real world is kind of terrifying. As a psych person, I can see where her commanding officer is gaslighting her. He's not trying to get her to have an appropriate level of control over her emotions. He's trying to cut off her emotions so the Kree society can have a killing machine. The Supreme Intelligence is playing into it hard. Giving her very sympathetic reasons for why Carol has no memories. That it's better she isn't bothered with the weight of memories, all the while knowing that if she had her memories, she would have the strength to break free. A Kree getting flung across the room by Carol in the beginning isn't gonna do much more than daze him for a minute; it's dangerous to the goals of the Kree rather than being dangerous to their health.

Captain Marvel was born as a human and lived on Earth until she destroyed and absorbed light speed engine then she was abducted by Kree Empire and she was given the transfusion of blood from the guy who was a general, the transfusion of Kree blood turned her into a Kree and human hybrid and Kree had very increased psychological abilities ❤

The main issue with Captain Marvel and even Black Panther is the lack of motivations for both villains and heroes because the writers mostly relied more on the theme of story too much rather than end goal or morality or morals of the character development so they mostly feel irrational than honest

I didn't love this movie, either, which was kinda disappointing-the first Marvel movie focusing on a woman, and my reactions is... meh? But I did really like the dynamic between her and Fury. And I liked that there was no romantic interest-not even a hint at romance. It's something I really appreciate at this point in my life.
I'm not sure what I'd want them to change while still introducing all these characters and alien races, though. I think it was a decent enough installment in the MCU, and hopefully Captain Marvel will shine more in future productions.
I don't get why people are disappointed about the "cat" scratching Fury. Nothing was going to be significant enough to match the legends built in our minds. And it fits perfectly for Fury to give a not-exactly-accurate account of what happened when he wants to make a point. Think of how he handled Agent Coulson's trading cards in Avengers. So if he wanted to convince Steve of his no-trusting point, it 100% makes sense for him to use his eye as a prop. If he had kids, he'd probably tell him he lost his eye due to picking his nose or some such thing, whatever habit he wanted them to stop. (Actually, by the time the kids grew up, they'd probably have been told he lost his eye from not brushing his teeth, using a knife his mama told him not to, underage drinking, running with scissors, and more.)
Though we didn't really *need* to know what happened. It could have been left to our imaginations. But I guess the writers couldn't resist.

And what his key flaw? His arrogance. What does Cap call him out for? Not being humble or selfless and laying his life down for his friend. Stop making this a women thing. This has nothing to do with women vs men. Black Widow is plenty quirky and I think she’s a great character

    • @soyluismanueltea

@@whitenoisereacts and yet people praise him for his arrogance. They never say “oh I don’t like the way he behaves, he should be more humble, who does he think he is?”. No, they cheer every time he makes a display of egocentrism. I think that’s the difference. I wish it wasn’t a women thing, but unfortunately for many people it is. And the thing with Black Widow is that she was always one addition to a group mainly of men and yes, she added, but didn’t lead (and was introduced as the sexy assistant - later assassin, so that gained her points with the male audience). If she would’ve lead the Avengers, you can bet she also would’ve received a lot of hate… Believe me, knowing that Captain Marvel could beat the male heroes with one move just because she can and her unapologetic attitude touched a nerve in many macho brains out there. Don’t get me wrong, I had to challenge my own thoughts a couple of times because I have found myself doing those things and we should do better. It is a matter of consciousness and practice. At least that’s what I think 🤷🏻‍♂️.

This movie is a mid pack Marvel movie for me, it's not in my top 10, and it has major flaws, but having said that I blame the directors for the choices that were made. I'm glad they will not be on for CM2. As far as Brie Larson goes, she is a very good actress (hence the blame to the directors). She was more interesting in Endgame then she is in her own movie. But the people who say she is a bad actress are just wrong.

No…but she was bad in this movie. It wasn’t just the writing. It was the director or something, but movies don’t all of the sudden provide a bad performance cause of writing. U can usually tell the difference. Don’t get me wrong the writing in this was pretty bad, but so was her acting. Which made it all the more disappointing cause ur right, she’s a very talented actress

I’m sure people have already pointed this out but a lot of the hate this movie and especially Brie Larson receives is very misogynistic. A female hero who is OP, a bit arrogant comes worse as a bitch. Tony Stark on the other hand comes across as a “cool badass” though he is worse in the arrogant and selfish department. You have to remember that for a majority of the movies you’re not supposed to know she’s human, so the “human” aspect of her isn’t supposed to exist, but you get glimpses of it in her banter and relationship with Nick and also Maria. I just find it interesting that literally everyone who I’ve spoken to who doesn’t like the movie, their biggest reason is because of Captain Marvel, and when I ask what about her they say she’s unlikeable because she’s arrogant and not approachable as a woman. But they also love Tony Stark so..it’s just very interesting. I’ve always Tony as a character and Iron Man is my least favorite hero because he’s extremely arrogant and selfish, way more than Captain Marvel.
Also I think you’re supposed to get a bit of an understanding about the Kree and their intentions from the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, that’s why it wasn’t so explicitly placed in this one, we have already been exposed to the Kree in the future, so you’re supposed to draw the parallel to that. Overall the movie could have better for sure, but I think Captain Marvel is a wonderful character and very interesting. I suspect more of her “humanity” will be explored in her later movies to come.

    • @beautifulbliss5883
      @beautifulbliss5883 2 года назад +1

They could have made her stoic without being a bitch, they could had her made her put a little more emotion or at least teary eyed when she said she is human. They could have had her at least have problems hiding her emotions more. This is coming from a woman perspective. You have Sarah Conner, Ripley who are strong female characters without being a bitch. The hardest part of making a OP character male or female is making them relatable, so that you as a reader, another human can relate to some degree. Superman is so OP that's its hard to relate to so they add in his weakness of kyrptonite, so when he dies for someone he loves or dies to save people we can relate. Carroll is OP and from the looks of it, no weaknesses except herself, for that kind of Character you have to show a deep internal struggle within and show that we'll so the general audience can relate to them, that's not misogyny that's story telling 101.

hey guys, I feel that this movie was not properly finished, I think there was no time. Kevin Smith director, if you know of him he's a big comic books fan and he concurred that Marvel was doing it right and it was because they were doing it by committee, in other words it is not just the work of one director, there is a larger group or person in charge orchestrating a cohesive arc for all of the movies to come together to make a greater whole and so if they did it properly with this movie they would have gone over the production again to find flaws and weaknesses and to fix anything they can to make it fit better into the bigger overall vision. I think that they never got to this point, they were unable to give Captain Marvel "the MCU treatment" that most of the other movies got to have. The hero here is very important and should have warranted the special treatment but it was late in the game of the 10-year arc and there was zero time in-between Infinity War and Endgame... there was no time to redo any part of the movie.

    • @mannygee005
      @mannygee005 Год назад

Let me also add... that I really like the "punching" fight scenes in this movie. The photon blasts are like punches and so the fights are "punch based" and are really well done. Now ask, who did the fight scenes? The team that did the fight scenes did really well. Whatever issues that the rest of the film had could be separated and some may argue could have been improved - personally I like the movie and I feel I understand Carol as a "fighter pilot" character. There is a famous description of fighter pilots... when enemy jets are attacking but they seem to have an obsession with the local ace pilot hero, Captain Gloval explains "...who knows what goes on in the mind of a fighter pilot." That line is a very brief way of explaining that fighter pilots are like a different breed that even command structure cannot fathom and it's best to just let them be as long as they can save the day, in the heat of battle you cannot be up there in the cockpit telling the pilot what to do, in fact their talent far surpasses you and you must let them be the captains of their ships/vessels. Each fighter pilot is independent when they're up there. This feels like a big digression but the film could have been improved probably by just a few minutes of changes... but it would need 6 months of going over everything by the gold team... and no there wasn't that kind of time unfortunately.

What happens to me with Carol is that they make her so powerful, she seems impersonal, distant, arrogant. While the others have busted their asses to save the world and losing in the attempt, she came in and said "I got this" I don't feel emotional connection to the character, and she comes out in almost every post credits of the MCU movies and always with the same "I gotta go, something happened" and it's like OMG, you're not into this at all. I get Nick Fury vibes that she's the big boss but you don't see her doing shit.

tbh I don't like this movie, I'm just not of fan of the amnesia plot line not saying it can't work but it doesn't work here for me. We don't really get to know Carol's personality. This isn't a bad movie, it's just okay. This is actually my least favorite marvel movie so far, even the movies many think are the worst in the MCU like Thor: the Dark World I find them more interesting then this movie tbh. Maybe it's because like you said with Ant Man & the Wasp, I already knew a lot of the characters and liked them. I think the What if series did a bit better of a job making Carol likable but not by much as it was a brief part in the show.
