  • Using the amazing power of google street view I can now plein air paint anywhere in the world! Here are two images one in Hungary and another in Cambodia, two places with such great character. Each image took me just under 2hrs. The challenge was to pick a place using a site called Map Crunch, it picks a random street view somewhere in the world.

    Came from Tyler Edlin's video, totally happy he suggested your videos. I've always wanted to use Google Maps for Plein air and I've never really known how to make it my own if that makes sense, so it was really nice to see your process. Good stuff!

    • @jair428
      @jair428  7 лет назад +5

      I didn't know he mentioned me, such a nice dude. I wouldn't worry about 'making it your own' focus on building a painting like you normally do and it just automatically becomes your own.

      Yeah, he mentioned you in one of his recent videos as someone who does plein air well and I definitely agree with him. Thanks for the advice!

    I absolutely love your messy-ish, rough painting style. It emotes a sense of freedom. It's quite beautiful!

    What is the px dimension for the artboard? I'm a beginner to digital art and I'm not sure if 1920px x 1080px is big enough ?

    Gorgeous color and I love how you center your detail on the subject (realism-like) and leave the rest kind of blocked in, really cool. Oh and your relflecting light is awesome. You could make anything beautiful!

    THANK YOU! I love when people post their process. It's very enlightening and I love picking up usable techniques. Question, how do you practice accuracy picking colors? Obviously no color picker so I want to know how I can become more accurate

    • @jair428
      @jair428  7 лет назад +11

      Thanks for the question, I've been painting landscapes digitally and traditionally for years and over time I've developed a sense of how light and atmosphere affect an environment. I think first about the local color of an object like trees then I think about how light is interacting with it, is it warmer or cooler? is it in light or in shadow? and how much atmospheric perspective is influencing an object? The main thing to keep in mind is breaking complicated environments down to simple basic shapes and from there. It's easier to figure out if a color is correct if you have another one to compare it to.

    Wow, the educational value of your short videos is really underestimated! I noticed some additional layers at the beginning of the first drawing, was it some kind of analysis? Do you do any analysis before you start to draw enviroments like this?

    • @jair428
      @jair428  7 лет назад +2

      Thanks, haha no the layers below were part of a sketch I did before starting this, completely unrelated. What you see in the beginning of the video (the line sketch) was my analysis., they are the first marks laying in my plans for the image.

    ok I'm very new and you might get these questions a lot but do you use custom brushes? and is this Photoshop or something else? these were incredible pieces to watch while being made it almost hard to believe they were done in under 5 hours, how long have you been doing this?

    • @jair428
      @jair428  7 лет назад +2

      Yes, I do use custom brushes (you can download my brushes for free is you follow the "gumroad" link in the description). I use mainly Photoshop for everything. I been drawing my whole life and digital painting since 03'. Thanks for watching!

    hmmmm, plein air means out in the open. So i don't think it's technically plein air painting, but yes, using google street as reference for landscape paintings is an awesome resource.

    good idea but i think the idea of plein air is to actually be at the location and have the experience of drawing from life not a picture of it. Great painting tho and enjoyed the video, also great tip despite what i said earlier, definitely will use for inspiration

    • @jair428
      @jair428  7 лет назад +4

      I made those specific tree brushes, I also use my own custom shapes to build up the trees. I'm creating a video now where I'll go over my brushes and how I use them, as well as share them with you guys -just need more time :)

    I notice that when you paint you are able to stay within the lines, do you use paths to have clean lines? And also your layers seem to change size...can you explain how and why?

    • @jair428
      @jair428  7 лет назад

      I never use paths, I just stay within the lines or I make a selection to mask off areas. If you right click a layer and select 'clip thumbnails to layer bounds' you'll see how the layers change size :)
