Can you help me
I don't know how to thank you enough for this. I was struggling over a week with this. Thanks a lot!!!
So far this is THE BEST video on ESP01 I have came across. Definitely going to check this and update about it to you.
For those experiencing upload Fatal error problem. After everything is assembled, put a ground switch on the ESP8266 reset pin. Power up the arduino nano and esp8266. Press reset pin for half a sec. Then upload program. GPIO-2 DOES NOT need to be 3.3V HIGH.
Sorry, didnt get what you mean by "press the pin". Is it like "connect and disconnect right away"?
Also, as per GPIO-2 - should it be LOW while i'm uploading the code?
Thanks!
Tried this today. For me it never works when i "press reset pin for half a sec". I could only upload code when Reset was connected to the GND from the moment before powering up the arduino and ESP8266 till the end of uploading. Otherwise it always fails with uploading. Maybe this is because I'm using Arduino Uno, not Nano?
Very informative and organized. Encouraged me to use Nano rather than Uno with 8266!
Thanks.
FINALLY I found someone who has brains and is explaining how to program esp8266 esp01, thank you very much!
I have watched like a million videos and this is the one that actually worked for me.... Thank you so much, man!!
I can't thank you enough for this! It helped me a lot!
Best of wishes for you man!
Thanks mate, I've been trying to use this board with no success for months. Now it's working!!
how did u get it working
Basically you are using the ftdi chip of the nano to program the esp. That will work for sure. I find it easier to use a 3v3 ftdi adaptor, but to each its own
Was looking for a video like his for a while. I’m using an Uno myself, but the video is instructive all the same. Kudos man
Thanks it finally worked with uno.
It works... and I'd been looking for a tutorial like this one for ages....
Finally solved Even if your jumper cables are slightly loose noise occurs ,so i soldred the connections on a pref board and put female headers on it to program esp 8266 this worked for me try it out....
HI! thanks so much for this video, worked a treat for me after many hours of failure. I wired the ESP8266 as per your instructions. However I found some additional things to look out for namely the download settings, which I matched to those seen on your pc, and also ensured that I was using 2.3.0 version of the ESP8266 library.
Wire wrapping is kind of fun on esp01s reducing the complexity!
I used nodemcu to program my esp01s with micro python
It worked! Thanks man ^_^
Btw, I used Arduino UNO and i used 10k resistor to connect CH_PD to VCC of ESP8266 and then VCC to 3.3v(using jumper wire) of Arduino UNO
CAN YOU HELP ME WITH THAT,?
@@bouallegsabrina3009did you relise it
Hello IT Chop Chop,
I really appreciate this excellent work , well presented and explained the circuit, it helped to get my project working.
Thank You.

Thank you!!!! Finally I was able to program my esp-01 Great!!!
Thanks a lot, it workeddddd! After suffering days :"D
"requires a little bit more love" 😂🤣
thank you so much, 😘 , i was working on it since 4 days. thanks
Like so many people I've found programming the ESP8266 to be impossible. I've researched every error message and tried every suggestion but without success, including this solution. However, I did pick up on the need for a good connection and in frustration I squeezed the ESP board and the FTDI connection between my fingers as it was loading. And it worked, the program loaded and ran. I don't know wether squeezing secures the connection or if my fingers act as some kind of capacitor/resistor. Unfortunately it's not a workable solution. Any comments?
Great video, it works for me! Thank you!
I think the mini socket is the better socket than the micro more reliable but you can get an adapter for 01 that makes it easy to connect but interesting video thanks
You should voltage drop between TX on the Arduino to the TX on the esp with a 1k and a 2k resistor so you only use 3.3V.
People say that ESP8266 can accept 5V into its RX, and 3.3V from ESP8266's TX to Arduino's RX is still recognized as HIGH. Thus, seems no need in resistors.
d to connect to ESP8266: Timed out waiting for packet header
esptool.FatalError: Failed to connect to ESP8266: Timed out waiting for packet header
i got this error
Same issue here, were you able to fix it?
Same, guys. Does someone have a solution?
Hi, will this process of programming the ESP-01 work if I use an Arduino UNO instead?
It's not easy to use :/ I've been struggling for longer than I care to mention. I'm glad your project went well, but the upload (from espressif or the Arduino's board manager tool chain) have failed me time again on the ESP-01. I can get the ESP-12 to work no problem, so I went through dozens of forums, etc. to troubleshoot. It always comes down to power supply, which I've investigated as well; I've used an AMS1117 with a 100uF and 1000uF capacitor in different trials. I've used batteries as well to avoid current draw issues and still haven't found a way to put these modules in a stable condition for flashing....
in my case, the problem solved when i changed the jumper that i used and the position of the wifi module..yet still it's all about the power supply
Surprisingly, I saw lots of recipes for ESP8266 where they say "connect GND and Reset by a wire". On the other hand, for programming ATTiny they say "connect GND and Reset by a 10 uF capacitor". Do you know why? Maybe, not a wire, but a capacitor should be used for ESP8266 too?
I tried the scheme proposed in this video (except that i used a 5v-3.3v converter to feed ESP8266), and I keep getting tons of errors while deploying the program to ESP. I have to unplug USB and plug it back again, and then it works - about 1 success out of 15-20 attempts.
Nice job! Great presentation. Thanks!
would this work for a an Uno r3 ? been messing with it, getting fatal errors
Did you fix it?
hi, I replicated your example and the IDE finished uploading the program but I do not get any serial prints. I added a reset button and removed the programming ground to GPIO0. then I reset the board and got (at 74880 baud rate) a message that the ESP8266 is still in boot mode (3,6). what im doing wrong?
They make these usb adapters now. They're NOT programmers. You have to put in a momentary switch between GPIO0 and GND. Hold the button as you plug the usb/01s module in to your pc. Release after one second. Tada. So so much easier. Now, what you can make this pos do after you "talk" to it? It'll leave you reaching for a Wemos D1 or esp32. That's just my opinion
Interesting. Will try. I was keeping GIO0 LOW during programming. Worked, but gave me about 1 successful upload in 15-20 attempts.
awesome! it works like a charm.
Great video! You helped me a lot!!

thank you for the video. It really helped me a lot . :)
Thanks man ! your video helped a lot !

Great tutorial.. thanks
Hi man, You said to connect Rx to Rx and I think that will break entire board! Pls confirm what You did there
Guys if you get any error, unplug first the esp8266 to the arduino(either the vcc or ground) then click the upload button. When it says uploading, reconnect the esp8266 to the arduino and it will be successful. But in my case, I was successful in uploading but when i clicked the serial monitor, nothing happens. I think my esp8266 wifi module is damaged.
Why not connect the 8255 cable directly to Nano?
It's not working for me, I can't get any signals from the ESP board
Thanks for the tutorial
I managed to upload the sketch, but at the end it says..."Leaving...Hard reseting via rts pin.."
and nothing happens anymore, nothing in monitor serial... I even uploaded the blink example but also nothing happens.. no blinking... Is there any other step to be done?
Actually I found out it worked. It was the esp01 that didn't have a stable power supply. A 100uf capacitor attached to VCC and GND did the job. :)
@@leonaka6539 Yes! Thank you, this worked.
I followed your video exactly and serial monitor does not show anything when I open it up... is it again insufficient current? Do I need to unplug any wires after I have uploaded the code to the Arduino nano?
I also have this issue, looks like we don't have enough power for WIFI module, I decided to connect ESP to 5v instead 3v3 - and after that, it started work.
Hello Sir , I did the setup exactly as you instructed here.....but I am getting this error "Timed out waiting for packet header". Can't get rid of it. The internet is telling different things. Can you please suggest anything
i did the same error

Thanks a lot, excellent explanation, but why just few tutorials ?
Instead of the Nano can I use Arduino Uno? Will it work with the same connection?
Is there a version of this where you're using an Arduino Uno with the 8266?
Tx to tx... I thought tx to rx and rx to tx
not on the arduino uno, because on tx it literally says "arrow tx" and :"arrow rx", which means to recieve tx/ rx. Thus u need to put tx to tx, otherwise, yes regualrly withtout the arrow, it would be rx to tx and tx to rx.

I need help man, I did EXACTLY what you did down to the T. It shows that it successfully compiled and uploaded the code and everything, but I'm not getting any output via the COM window. I see this video is a few years old now, so is there some extra step i need to do in 2021 in order to get this to work?
I have a little doubt. Is it possible to use SunFounder Nano as an expansor for digital ports?
My ideia is connect more devices on the wifi board without using the arduino(uno, due, leonando....)
Sorry for the dummy question, I'm learning it.
you connect Rx pin of esp8266 with rx of nano without voltage divider circuit!
Can you please advice link to programming it (on / off) smart home using any IOT app like tuya or Blynk ??

Hey, Go to this link, theres a lot of possible fixes. the way it worked out for me was with the method that a user named "zurexalexis" posted. just enter in this link and "cntrl + F" for that username and try what he said. github.com/esp8266/Arduino/issues/770
also i used an external 3.3 V Power supply. just connect the ESP VCC to the EXTERNAL 3.3 Volts and connect the EXTERNAL GND to the ESP and Arduino's Gnds.
Is your board set to the esp8266 like he shows in 8:15 ? and is the right COM port selected?
Fixed it, thx Frederico!!
As per my knowledge , reason for the error is power shortage . If Vcc and CHPD didnt get 3.3v properly , we will end up in getting error . Try to use 5v and use a voltage regulator . Thank You .
I followed your guide exactly and do not get the same results, current from the Nano to the ESP8266 is about 40ma so I switched the power source to external and am now getting 3.3v at 174ma but if I click to open to serial monitor IDE goes red with lots or errors and says it had lost connection to the board? Any Ideas?

Change your cable type. You need a data transfer one not a charging one.
This is - work to ESP32 wroom - also?
USE THE VERSION 2.3 OF ESP8266 FOR INSTALL
Don't you need a logic level converter?
Why you don't connect reset in esp to 3.3v ?
nano is not hacked to 3.3v , are you risking to connect esp-01 to 5v ? or there´s a catch on the nano ?
Almost worked. when it finish to upload the esp turn off and just turn on when i do a reset
sounds like you power is not enough 3.3v
I have same problem. Did you solved it?
Thanks it worked!! FInally I found a tutorial that really works :D

WHen I connect Ch_pd pin to vcc 3.3v , the light goes off on the esp8266
disconnect the usb and re-connect it... all connections should be done before connecting the usb

how about the level shifter?
Thanks :)
where can i download the library
is it avaible in the arduino library manager?
please someone help me
the uploading of code is completed successfully. but when the uploading completes esp8266 modules red led goes off and when i start Serial Monitor its not running the program and not showing any output.
its showing nothing just a white screen
please rply soon
I got exactly the same problem. Have you solved your problem?
I've wired this up the same way with an Uno and it seems like it doesn't get enough power. I've seen others say that the 3.3v pin doesn't provide enough current and that you must use 5v, but then adjust the voltage.
How come you don't have this problem? Does this Arduino provide more current?
The nano seems to be more stable. I had the same problem with the uno and the mega. There is a way to decrease the current from 5v with a ohm resistor and regulator. Google that.
I think a capacitor might resolve this problem.
This is very clear! Tnx but i have 1 question.. Rx-Rx and Tx-Tx?? Some videos are Rx-Tx and Rx-Tx.. Can you explain me this? Tnx☺
I'm pretty sure it goes RX to RX and TX to TX
@@Karatendo tnx for your reply sir
if i'm not wrong it is because you are using the nano just as a usb to serial ttl converter, that is also the reason why he also connect the reset pin to ground to avoid listen for the atmega328 for commands
Paul is correct. In this case, Arduino is not communicating with the ESP. We are just making use of USB to serial chip of the Arduino.
But I thought he need to remove the GRND cable from GPIO0 in ESP after downloading the program! May be it still works this way I haven't physically tested.
