When you discussed how you back off when people become argumentative, you are ABSOLUTELY correct. I have put up with alot of sh*t in order to keep my job. Even to the point that some even make me cry. I stood there and did not argue. I said a few things to the one woman - "perhaps another cashier will be better to assist you". That did not appease her so I said, "I am no engaging in any conversation with you". And this was a so-called Catholic (she was wearing a cross and purchased religious magnets, wall hangings, books on 'the lord') who treated me this way right before Christmas. People do not realize there are individuals who WANT nothing more than to start an argument with them. Whereas I am the opposite. I do not like confrontation- I forget reality and will get destructive (someone yelling and using abusive language takes me back to the time I was verbally and physically abused by my brother- so if someone speaks to me in THAT tone of voice or mock me, I just snap). I always tell people never put someone down unless you are willing to help them up and/or you don't know what they are going through and you may be THEIR scapegoat; such as a person finds out their child is diagnosed with terminal cancer or they just lost their spouse.
