Massive Thank you for your massive sharing of tips and knowledge on the 950 conversion, kudos from a 950 proud owner in Italy ❤💪🙏🏻
I have a 990 08 m0del and absolutely agree with the carburettor being easier to ride . Instant power , far better torque .
At low revs the injectors get confused and can give a jerky feel at low speed off road work . Not pleasant it necessitates a lot of clutch slipping .
I have ridden the 950 carb version and it is a joy . Very forgiving , very much easier to operate with better torque therefore far better acceleration . Smooth and powerful .
The injectors just can't match that . Kev Australia .
As I keep saying it's all personal preference. I agree with everything you've said though and I'm very happy with the current set up. Wishing you well. Happy trails.
Outstanding workmanship and extremely useful detailed comment responses and parts list.
Thank you. I try to put as much info in as possible in these videos. All the best. Chris
What a bloody great video. Very inspired now to do my own
Although looks like a lot of work.
Keep up great content.
Thanks for kind words. It was a good project to work on. All the best
Amaaazing video. Very inspirational. Keep it up 👍
Thank you. Positive messages are very much appreciated.
Thank you for this video!!! I have a 10 990 adv and have been very happy and satisfied with her... I don't have the big throttle issues most people complain about. But, but... after going through forums and such, it makes me want to buy a 950 and another 990 and convert it to carbs... me thinking, If I have been so very happy with what I have, if a 950 and a carb converted 990 IS that much snappier=happier, makes me want to try it out...
Ask said before this conversion suits my needs and works for my application. The 950 is definitely less thirsty. This is a good balance. Others have successfully taken a 990 and re-mapped and got rid of the snatchy nature of the EFI. There are people who are very skilled and know what they are doing in this area. I would also mention that parts are getting harder to find. The 950 timing wheel for example. All the best.
Nice watch and full of useful information 👌🏻
Cheers AJ
Great video !
Thank you. I’ll get a proper mic for next one.
Awesome video, been thinking about this conversion for a while. So good to see how it's turned out. Trying to source the parts for me is tricky though as I'm in NZ. Would you know anyone with parts to sell? Cheers.
We have a recently created 9x0 marketplace group on Facebook. There's a fair bit of activity there. For my conversion it was a mixture of KTM dealer, eBay and Facebook. The hardest thing to find was a good wiring loom. Next project is to build from scratch. Good luck.
@@HeavyEnduroRacingplease Chris let us know is you did create the loom from scratch, it'd be a bless for all us 950 owners❤
Great video!!! Any news for final carbs setup.
I haven't had much time to spare for this project because of Africa Eco Race preparations and training. I did reduce both pilot and main jet sizes and have been using the bike over the last 4 weeks. I'm very happy with it in all aspects but I would like to get the bike on the Dyno before I do a conclusive video. The Africa Eco Race has just been announced as postponed so hopefully I'll get on the Dyno soon.
So after a day at the Dyno and going through masses of previous 9x0 Dyno data we ended up with 165, 162 mains, 3rd clip down on needles and 2 turns on fuel/air mixture screw. What's interesting is that I've tuned 3 bikes and they are all completely different. The other 9x0 riders in the team again all have different settings. No 2 bikes it seems are the same.
@@HeavyEnduroRacing Really thank you for sharing!!!! i guess with close airbox 42 pilots and snorkel on. Thank for your time man
@@nikosgavriil1802 Yup. 42 pilots.
@@HeavyEnduroRacing, how about float height? Thank you again!!
Love this Chris, great detail shared thank you. I've a 990, I agree with what you said about the fuel pump and I happen to have a Facet sitting here from my old Africa Twin. If I was to do the fuel pump alone do you think it could be done without changing the injectors? And secondly if I was to do the injectors also, would the 990 loom HAVE to be swapped? Thanks!
Hi Darren, My understanding is the facet won't work with injected 990. The pump pressure is incorrect. Facet is 2-3.5 psi. The 990 pump is 47.8 to 53.6 psi. Hope this answers question.
@@HeavyEnduroRacing Hi Chris...I was pondering if that might be the case alright. Thanks for your reply 👍
NICE👍
Thanks guys

Awesome video. Tell me would it be possible to show us how to install an override switch for the fans ?
I would like to do the same to my 950.
2 choices:
1) search 'CoolAIR Manual Radiator Fan Switch KTM 990 690 950 640 625 660 RC8' in eBay and find ready made plug and play.
2) The thermostat (temp switch) in the radiator simply opens/closes the ground connection to the fan. To override - a) bridge thermostat with switch, b) run a wire from good ground point on bike to a switch and from switch to the Brown (earth) wire coming out of the fan.
@@HeavyEnduroRacing thanks a million!!
Who did you use to Dyno the bike? (I'm local to you...!)
Outstanding work but i think the conversion has voided street legality because of the altered emission control. I wonder if there will be problems at the next MOT!
No issues here in the UK.
how can you get water in the fuel injector in the middle of desert tho...
It's in the fuel out there.
Hobbling the mighty 990.
Don`t brake your head....Carbs Rules!...
But cant you tune the EFI and put the 950 cams ln 990?
Would that not work to get better torque and 950 feel?
I see no reason why not and after spending the day at the Dyno and talking all things tuning related it confirms that with a bit of time in experienced hands you can get EFI to run pretty good (I saw plenty of 990 adventure and SM dyno graphs). It would though be different again in feel & performance to the route I took. It's all about personal preference and the application you want the bike to perform best in. For the riding I do where contaminated fuel exists, you're in sand and dust all day and I want the need to reduce the chance of electronic failure the carbs work for my application. The mixture of cams and carbs currently gives me another 25 - 30 more mile range which again is important to my needs. All the best
@@HeavyEnduroRacing ok thanks for the answer but how come carbs be more fuel effiicen?...in my world EFI has always been the most efficient......iam not saying you are wrong but it goes against all ive learned abut EFI
@@Motoinc I don't have a technical answer I'm afraid. As said we have both 990 and 950 riders. The 990's always run out of fuel 1st. In the desert they seem to really suffer. I can only go on personal experiences. It's well documentated that 990 is thirsty and I agree there's not much logic. The newer breed of bikes are much better. My guess is that things improved as manufacturers got to grips with the technology and built the bikes from the ground up with fuel injection in mind. As said I chose not to go down the tuning of efi route as it wouldn't work for my needs. Maybe others out there have and have had success. Thanks again.
So it means 950 is better than 990?
No! Each bike can be set up to run well and it's all about personal preferences. There are plus and minus points for each bike. We have riders who swear by EFI and love running dongles off the odb and messing around with it and riders who love the raw feel and mechanical nature of a carb. Which bike is best is dependent on what application you need it for and how you like the power delivery and feel. As said elsewhere the carbed 990 suits my needs where my preferred riding is in the desert and genuinely I spend little time on tarmac. I prefer the feel, have better reliability due to riding in areas where contaminated fuel exists better mpg, more torque/hp and the bike runs cooler. As said in the video I had no real issues with the 990 apart from the fuel consumption and no question the 990 is obviously faster. This conversion is all about the creation of ultimately a better race bike for my needs. All the best
Wow, you mean the 990 has worse fuel efficiency than the 950?!
Just sell it and buy a 950....off you go !!!!
Not quite. A carbed 990 is better than 950. Bigger impeller and cooling flow, more torque and more horses with similar mpg. In current testing I'm getting 25 -30 more miles out of a tank over EFI and the bike runs cooler than the EFI and 950. 990 newer model with evolutionary changes and a stronger swingarm. 950 of course still great and no reason to do this 990 conversion if you have already. Enjoy
Bro, nice work 👏👏👏 Thank's for sharing. Satanist music it doesn't suit your work 😉
